Title: Carlsbad, Ca. area Trad shops, ranges?
Post by: Bud B. on June 14, 2012, 09:25:00 PM
I know it's a long shot but I'll be in the Carlsbad area mid July. Anything trad archery in the local area? Say within 30-45 minutes? Any ranges?

Thanks.

It's been a few years since I was in that area(1994) but I know Camp Pendleton had a great range may be something to check out if nothing else.

Bud, I am from San Diego. sorry to say there are no trad only shops in the area. The closest range is in Balboa Park and that is about 45 min.  From Carlsbad. I belong to Bearstate Bowhunters and our range is up in the mountains at least one hour from Carlsbad. balboa park is in downtown San Diego, Look up San Diego archers website. There is info to get to range.
I am committed to a trip in July at the same time frame you will be here otherwise we could hook up and go to our range.
Hope this helps. Tom M

I'll be visiting my daughter and son-in-law, who live on Pendleton. Will check out the suggestions.

Thanks.

Bud, sorry to say the range that used to be at Camp Pendelton is long gone. The area was taken over by paintballers. After Desert Storm the club members (USMC) were sent to other duty stations. after that the club tried but never regained itself.
A new group has gotten started but I am not sure of the exat location on base.
I also think your chance to get on the base without a sponsor is slim. Maybe another trad guy from the club will see this thread.

Just saw your last. Your son in law should be able to llocate the range. He should get in touch with the Pendelton Sportsmens Club that is on base. Last time I heard they have a 3d range 24/7 setup. happy shooting

Doesn't Willow Creek Archery in Escondido have some trad stuff? I've never been there but I seem to remember people saying it was worth a visit.

Like what was said there are not much for trad shops in San Diego area, that being said there is Performance Archery that has the largest selection of trad bows in the county, most of the archery shops cater to the compound bows,

I think Performance is the one I was trying to think of...

We'll likely visit the PX at Mirimar so both shops will likely get a pop-in from me.  :)

My son-in-law doesn't have a bow....yet....but he's shot my daughter's 30# Shakespeare Wonderbow and loves shooting, so, it looks like I don't need to be looking for another excuse to buy a trad bow.  ;)  He's given me one.Dang! He would be a righty.  :(

Thanks again for the help.

I used to fling arrows at cottontails behind my barracks there .. There was a lot of ground to tromp around on at Pendleton.

At Pendleton now. Rabbits are EVERYWHERE!! Gonna try to look at, although a very slim chance, maybe talking my son-in-law into rabbit hunting.

Bud
There are two ranges at Pendleton. One at the South end and one at the North. Look up the Pendleton Sportsmans Club and look for the Archery Committee Members. You can probably contact them via email if looking for a tour. I believe there is a work party this coming Saturday so a good chance to hook up and meet a bunch of Great Guy's!!! No archery at Carlsbad But some Good surfing..........
Hi Guy
Going to the High Sierra Shoot in a few weeks? Perhaps I'll see you there....

Still working on getting range info but in the mean time we went to Willow Creek Archery. I met Jim, whom I guess is the owner, and he fixed my son-in-law up with a 35# PSE Heritage as a first bow for him. Some 1916s and some field points and a glove and stringer and he's set for some shooting and maybe even some bunny hunting.

Thanks Jim!

Bud B. ,
Did you meet Hoyt? The dog in Willow Creek? I love that store. Drop in every time  I come home.

I didn't see Hoyt. We'll be going back. Jim had Abbott Longbows in stock and several other RH recurves. For a compound shop he wasn't too light on the trad stuff. His heaviest field points in stock were 125s though. He did make the comment that since the movie The Hunger Games was released he has seen a significant increase in young ladies taking an interest in archery.

We went to the Pendleton Game Warden yesterday. Lots of hoops to jump thru for hunting and just target practice. Seems the archery range is run by a private group and having to get all those contacts in line makes me just want to hold off on pressing the issue. If I had a longer visit planned then maybe. The hoops aren't bad, just more than what I care to pursue with my time restrictions.

At least my son-in-law is headed in the right direction for target practice and hunting.
