Title: Tradgedy struck today!
Post by: on June 10, 2012, 04:24:00 PM
I went out to shoot the 3D shoot at Austin Archery Club today. There was quite a few trad shooters and it was a beautiful morning. I pulled my longbow out first and shot the course with a couple others and had a great time. I shot well and decided to get my recurve out and shoot a second round. We walked up to target number 1 and another group of trad guys was shooting at target 30 just a few yards down the road. I walked down to talk to a few friends and see how their day was going. While standing there along the side of the road, a pick-up truck came driving down the road to exit the range. As he passed by us I felt my bow tick against his truck. Before I could even react, the bottom limb tip somehow got wedged in the small gap between the cab and the bed of the pick-up and he was dragging me down the road. I yelled and he stopped but it was too late. The damage had been done and the fiberglass in the curve of the bottom limb had been cracked. OMG!!!!!! I could not believe this. I have stood on that road and watched 1000 or more cars go by me over the years and have never even suspected that this scenario could have ever happened. This was not his fault (he was a friend of mine) nor mine really. I think it was just one of those freaky things that happens sometimes.

Oh well, I have a REALLY good friend of mine who is a bow builder and I'm sure he will fix me up with a new set of limbs. The problem is that it really takes a long time to become one with a bow and train it to do what you want it to.

I think I will go cry now!

sorry about that ,my brother inlaw dropped his tree stand on his bow one time and the damage looked a lot worse then yours, and we put some super glue and a little sanding of the glass and he's still shooting it today  and that's been several years now ,good luck gib

I actuall thought about putting a bit of epoxy on it and wrapping it with sinew like you would on a selfbow. It would eithr hold or break......one of the two.

I was there and saw it happen. Almost in slow motion. I saw the truck slowly driving past us and Jerry's bow near the truck. Then, Bisch must have turned slightly or backed up an inch or so. All of the sudden the bow is wedged between the cab and the bed and Bisch is being drug down the dirt road a few feet.

Where is the you tube camera when you need it?

It would have been funny but not when it happens to a good guy like Bisch.

Thanks Matt, but I don't think I would wish this on my enemy. The only way this could have been funny is if my bow had not been hurt in the process.

I don't remember what super glue it was ,and i think it was Gary davis of Rattle stick self bows that told me to use the super glue ,he said it gets into the cracks alot better? but i'm no bow maker so i wouldn't know? But it worked on bro inlaws and is still holding . again good luck gib

Bisch I am so very glad that you weren't hurt.

Butch and I did a homemade repair on a bow years ago using superglue then wrapping with sinew. Then we wrapped the opposite limb in the same spot just to balance out the bow and the bow is still shooting.

God's grace and peace, Mudd

PS: BTW the bowyer told me that to bow was beyond repair.

You were there for me bro when my riser blew two weeks ago, and I was there to share your loss today.  It's a sick, sick feeling when something happens to one of our top bows.  I hate to see this happen to anybody's bow, but that bow and you have won a lot of first's in recurve classes this year....made me sick when it happened.

All I can say is I'm really glad with the IBO World's next month that it wasn't your longbow.  You get a hold of Bob yet?

If that is in the one layer of glass and nothing wrong in lamination, I think that could be repaired with super glue. If the crack has any openings that can be taken advantage of to get glue to  seep in. The sucess of repair could be judged by how much the cloudiness goes away as the glue will make it clear if it penetrates. How much poundage? what kind of bow? Have any questions PM me. I am not a Bowyer but have repaired a couple over the years.

Tough day Bisch, I'm sure if Bob can't fix it he can build you another set. If they can't be repaired, make sure the fire's hot...

Clint, I do have another bow, but not another recurve. With the Recurve Championship tournament coming up in 3 weeks I have to figure something out fast!

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. I am going to look into fixing this a little more as several have suggested might be able to be done. Me and this bow were pretty tight and I sure hate the thought of having to find a new dance partner.

Matt, had it been you, just hold on and bring the vehicle to a stop with minimal damage to the truck.  Another case for the heavy bow advocate.

Sorry, Bisch, that's a bummer.

Yeah, I should have just stabbed the engine block with my Howard Hill Longbow and pinned the truck to the ground.

Sorry, Bisch.

Bummer Bisch!
Like some others have mentioned you might get some of the thin super glue, Locktite420 or similar, warm up the limb and the glue some and apply it. Have some Q-tips ready to catch the overflow.  Bowdoc might have some good advice if you contact him.
I have a bunch of recurves your welcome to use any of them, but I know how persnickity you can be about your equipment.  And you have a powerful resource in Bob Sorrels

Hey Bisch, before you go the super glue route try some actual bow epoxy, like smooth on of G2.It would be alot stronger.Even if you have to lift the splinter to force glue underneath, clamp and let dry .Sand smooth and add some finish. Its surprising what this can do.All the best with her.Steve

Glad that you were not hurt.  I would think twice about repairing it if there is any doubt about it being safe when you are done.  You weren't hurt this time, but what if it blows up on you after the repair?  Not to mention if the tournament means anything to you and it blows half way through the round.  I think that I would find another set of limbs if possible or another bow.  Good luck.

The most important thing is you were not hurt.  I hope a repair works and gets you back in the game quick.

Sorry about the bow Bud. I know the feeling. I once let a longbow down from the stand after dark and it propped against the tree without knowing I crunched it with my climber coming down. Wanted to cry.RC

The generosity of Trad Gang never ceases to amaze me. I have gotten several PMs with offers fron guys I have never met offering to help fix my bow or loan me a bow till I get one.

You guys are great!

Just to let you know, I took my bow to the bowyer (Bob Sarrels) today and he is going to get me all fixed up. I am having a new set of limbs made and have a "loaner" to use until I get mine back.

Thanks again everybody!

Bisch -
Man I'm terribly sorry for what happened to your bow. 1/2" here, 1/2" there and all's well.

Anyway, remember Chester? I told you then that Bob said you need new limbs for that bow.....but that was your longbow. Go ahead, tell Bob you need some new limbs for the longbow too. You can't have two different bows with that much age difference in the limbs. They need to "Age Together". Like a good marriage.     :bigsmyl:

Ouch!

Glad you weren't injured, but sorry to hear about the bow.  Can you ascertain the extent of the damage to the limb?  Could a cyano/sinew treatment be applied or perhaps a re-lam of a layer or 2?
