I try and leave mine at home or in the truck but now-a-days, it's a good feeling to have mine on me because you never know what you will run into in the woods now;
You?
ALWAYS, no good reason not to!!!!! I may not turn it on, but I have it for an emergency.
And it's on me, not in my pack. I hunt from elevated stands almost exclusively.
Take it with me just in case.
Of course I do. No shame here either. I like to call people when I make a kill or see a nice buck while I'm out hunting. It's also nice to send them a pic or two right after the harvest. I also text my buds when I'm on stand and waiting for something to show.

Ditto on all that
yes
always. One of my buddies fell out of a stand, slipped through his safty belt and fractured his neck. No major spinal cord damage, but he was in rough shape. was able to call another buddy for help. Docs said that if he didnt get help when he did, he may have been parralized, or dead.
95% of the time I hunt alone. You never know what can happen.
I always take mine, i don't have to carry a camera and I also have the kindle app on mine so I can read a bit which helps me stay in my stand longer.
If I'm hunting where I have cell service I carry it. I usually don't have service when elk hunting. When I'm hunting alone I am a bit more careful, cause it's unlikely anyone would find me soon enough to be of any help.
Yes!
No reason to where I hunt.....no service.......no power, no phone lines.....seven miles to the nearest phone! If I'm closer to home... sometimes!
I also keep mine in my pack. As stated by elknutz alot of the country I hunt has no cell coverage. I did walk for several hours one night to find coverage to call for help when my truck died. I was glad I had it that night or I would have walked all night to get help. But they can also provide a false sense of security.
Well, I never have -- but maybe I should so that I at least have the phone camera with me.
Absolutely, if my wife or daughter need me hunting isn't nearly as important. I also use the weather radar all the time.
Yes!
always take it with me. Have it on silent and check it every hour or so.
ABSOLUTELY.
I don't even own one, but there is nothing wrong with having one with you if you want.
I don't have one of those cellular telephones. So no, I don't carry one hunting. Remember, you can't fall out of a tree if you're not up in one. Nor do I have one of those global positioning things you asked about on another thread. I do have a trail camera though, so I am not too old fashioned. But it has been sitting on my shelf, never opened, for 4 years. I rate my woodsmanship as questionable, so I carry two compasses and know to trust them. Because I trust my compasses, I have never been REALLY lost in the woods. I did learn a few things last year during Ken's ADK Attack hunting trip! Like carrying a flashlight in the dark.
.........in the truck.......
always, leave it shut off while hunting.
Nope. I hunt in one of the few places in my state where I can't get cell service. I suppose someday it will become available. If so, I'll probably carry it. Probably leave it turned off though and use it only in an emergency. When I'm hunting, the last thing I want is someone to call or text me. The people I hunt with don't want to be bothered that way either.
Always. You never know when you may need it. Plus there are a couple cool apps that are beneficial to me when scouting or hunting.
Yes.
Hap
yes.
Those who don't are foolish. Anything can happen in the woods, severe cuts, falls, broken bones, heart attacks. Geez.
Yes & most phones GPS and map functions will work even without cell signal.
Always!
Yep! Even if I'm using 18th century gear and clothing - a cell phone is hidden away.
I use a turkey call (some yelps with answering gobbles) for a ringtone and I don't have to turn the phone off in the woods! :bigsmyl:
yes
I have no concern whatsoever about what might be in my woods except for gravity. I carry the cell phone in case I fall and kept get up.
I can't stand the things ( my wife has one and can't even get a signal in the house :biglaugh: ) let alone when I'm hunting. Defiantly no signal there. All of NY isn't the city. Above Albany no one cares about. If I need to be reached ,I did just invest in an answering machine on the home phone.
Yes, I might even respond to some work email while on stand ...but only important ones.... :^)
><>>
Glenn
I carry one also
Converml hit it on the head about the cell coverage in northern NY. Well said!
Almost always. Just in case.
Glenn
Ronp, I never new about trad gang till they updated the old phone lines last year for "hi speed" internet Couldn't get above 31k?sad but true :bigsmyl:
I never have because of poor reception. But, with that improving all the time, and my getting older and usually hunt alone, I'll be carring it this season.
Yep like to check the stock......:-)
Darn phones
I don't have a cell phone.
Always! Me and my boy like to text back and forth when in the woods. He's thirteen and I like to keep tabs on him. Plus having a camera on hand is nice!
Jason
I carry one. Mainly for safety reasons. I don't want to get seriously hurt and die a slow and miserable death if a phone call could save my life. I also carry it in case there is some sort of emergency at home. Those are my only two reasons. I don't carry one to call my peeps and check Facebook. It is nice to be able to check the weather radar on occasions.
always take mine

Always......90 yr. old mother that depends on me and a 4 yr. old grandson with a pacemaker. Mom is doing fine and as is the grandson, but I want to be available if needed. Mike
Naw, it's in the truck. Rings too much anyway and hunted for 50 years without one, too old to change.
For the most part, I try not to take mine, all to often though it finds it's way to my pocket. This year, for the most part it'll stay at camp!
Thanks,
Cell phone and a spot.
Getting to old to climb out of the canyons with any kind of serious injury.
Besides if I kill an elk I usually just text a few friends some pictures and it ain't just a couple hours and I have some help.
That is when there is cell service.
John
I always take my phone. I keep it on silent and usually in a pocket I can't get to easily so I am not tempted to use it for anything. However I never leave the phone at home, just in case something happens.
Always with me.
If you need one, fine. If you think you need one, fine. If you don't use one, good for you! I have no desire to carry one. There is nothing so important that I need to have instant contact with anyone. I WANT to be alone in the woods. SOME organizations feel it is unethical to use a phone while hunting, especially if you are signaling about animal movement. If I get hurt and can't call someone then I consider that natural selection.
yes i do. Mine takes great pics!
yes!
Bisch
I'm like a few others on here. I take my cell phone with me, but it's turned off while I'm hunting.
I don't worry too much whom I run into human wise. I worry more about rattlesnakes.
Always!!!!
In 2008 I fell while walking down a steep hill. I completely ruptured my left quadriceps tendon and, as a result, didn't have the ability to use my leg from the knee down.
I had a buddy with me (who I contacted by radio) and we used a cell phone to call 911.
Pretty embarassed to say the least. There was a full complement of fire trucks, ambulances, and sheriff's deputies who came to my rescue.
Also now carry one of the SPOT devices.
Don't leave home without either one.
I can't immagine what my incident would have been like without being able to call for help. Not sure that it saved my life, but probably aided in me being able to walk again.
Ken
Yup. Love texting when I need to
ya! i keep it in my shirt pocket on vibrate.
my girlfriend called just after sunset and i was drawing on a doe, me and the deer both about jumped outa our skins, its amazing how loud the vibrater is on a dead calm evening. now it goes on silent.
Absolutely, without fail.
no cell service when chasing goats and sheep. I have a SPOT unit, worth its weight in gold for the peace of mind it grants my wife.
Yep!
Absolutely!
better safe than sorry!!! take it
Yes, except last year in a downpour my rain jacket didn't perform too well when I left the pocket flap open. Tried rice and the oven but failed to resuscitate it. Fortunately I was at the end of my phone contract. So bring a ziploc baggie.
I've also been busted holding my phone at weird angles trying to get a gps signal in a stand - that felt pretty stupid -- so I try to keep it stashed.
I have a heart condition and would but they won't pick up a signal around here so I dropped the service.
Yes, As a safety net. I hunt by myself a lot. My wife appreciates my call, on the start for home.
Don't own one, don't want to own one.
Was on call 24/7 for 19 years.
That's why I don't do that anymore.
Just want to be alone with myself when in the woods.
I have never hunted where there is service.
Yes its always with but usually off and I seldom have service.
Yes
Not always. If there is service I'll take it and leave it off until I need it. If there is no service then why bother.
Yes, but only because my Wife wants me to. So I turn it off and pack it along so she don't worry.Makes you wonder how we survived before cell phones ?
Always, its my main camera and a great safety tool.
Most definately. With my medical condition, I also went and got a phone with the gps tracking and 911 feature. All I have to do is hit one button, and they can come within 3 or 4 feet of me if I get in trouble. Really makes hunting and outings a lot more pleasurable knowing I can get help if needed.
Yes. Obviously only useful when there is service, which isn't always.
Before I enter a tree stand I verify I have two knives, my phone and at least one screw in step if I am in a climber.
I carry two knives in case I need to cut the safety line for any reason. I carry two because it would be hard to pick up a knife you dropped from 15-20ft while fumbling with it while in a nervous rush.
I don't wear a watch, so it's my only time piece. Just a basic flip phone, so I can't do all the fancy stuff, but it's good to have for emergencies, or tell the wife I made a shot and will be late.
Wish I had a dollar for each time I said, "I Hate This Darn Phone!" But take it in the woods with me? You bet I do!... Keep it turned off inside a zipper pocket of my vest...
... mike ...
I hunt alone a lot so my wife absolutely insists that I take it. Of course there's no service so it's in the truck turned off, but I have it! :goldtooth:
LD
I didn`t carry one till I turned 70, now I wouldn`t go to a stand without one!
I've never carried a cell phone at all but now that I am older (be 72 on 19th of this month) and a multiple by-pass survivor, I have decided to stick mine in my haversack "just in case". It will stay off except in an emergency.
Joe
Always! I'm 65 and not taking any chances.
I always take it.
In my pack for safety reasons. Might help someone fine me before the "yotes".
I turn around and go home if I don't have my cell phone. I try to keep my phone always in a zipped pocket within easy reach, so that I could get to it if I were hanging upside-down from a tree stand, for example. I have never had a hunting accident in 25+ years, but it only takes one.
I have a friend who fell out of a tree stand and got caught up in his safety strap. He hung almost completely upside-down for 2 hours until someday came looking for him and found him.
Yup, off and in my pocket just in case a good day goes bad.
Never use to take my phone, but now the wife insists that I do. Especially since I usually hunt alone.
Have found it to be useful when hunting with a buddy. Sure is nice to be able to text them to help with packing out a deer.
HUH????
Always take it.
Yes, always with me!Have way to many irons in the fire not to.
Yes I keep it on airplane mode
I take mine. I usually turn it off though. A lot of places I hunt we don't get reception, but it's there in case.
Frank
I carry concealed with it on buzz.
i always take mine you never know when a emergency may occur in the woods or back home

I"m with you! It's possible, you never know, you could save someone's life by having it!
I carry one while I'm hunting from a treestand. It is never turned on, ever. I refuse to be bothered while I'm in the woods, or anywhere else.
When not in a stand it stays in my car, turned off. It is for emergency only.
I feel sorry for the masses as they let a phone rule their lives.
