Title: rookie hog hunter ques ???
Post by: Lordswarrior on June 04, 2012, 11:25:00 AM
well it seems as though i may be one of the few members of this forum that has never hunted hogs!to my advantage it landed me a trip to the "bacon strip" offered in auction 5, to my disadvantage i have a few beginner questions.
1- the set up i took for elk consisted of my 53# take down with 680gr complete arrows.muzzy 200gr ss's sitting on 3r's tradonly shafts.
my whitetail setup is a 47# hybrid takedown longbow shooting basically the same arrow but no weight tubes and a varity of lighter heads, all weighing in at around 540grs total
so will either work for hogs? truth be told i love my 47pounder and have much more confidence with it. especially out to about 25yards. but i am afraid that it may be to light of a setup?
2- this should get a bunch of opinions- what is the best/ favorite broadhead for makin bacon?
3- will i be more successful if i wear the same hat as terry ?
more ques later
thanks

I like the 1st set up.....especially if you run into one of our volkwagens.

If you get scared....you can wear my hat    :biglaugh:

so if i decide to practice some 3-d using my neighbors v.w. bug should i aim for the sideview mirror or just center-punch the door?  :biglaugh:

Be careful on those Volkswagons.  You might hit the clown button.  They'll start coming out and never stop....

CONGRATS on your win!!  Look forward to reading about your trip.  You're not alone...there's still many (like me) who only dream of hunting hogs.  You've really got something special to look forward to.

All else being equal, the first set up does have advantages, especially on big hogs.  But shot placement is key, so accuracy it a big factor as well.

Tippit shoots bows more similar to your 2nd set up, and has killed one of those VW's with it on the Bacon Strip.  So it can be done.

The good news is that you shouldn't really have to worry about 25 yard shots.  The stand set ups down there should give you great chances at 15 yards or less.  If you are confident in your accuracy at that range with the heavier bow that is the one I would choose.

If you practice on a VW aim for the bottom of the door.  I have killed several hogs and can tell you that the heart sits real low in a hog not like the 3d targets show it.  If you can get a quarting shot it is prefered due to the shields on the hogs.  The shields are accatually on the inside of the hide around and behind the shoulders it is like a cartalige build up and the bigger the hog the thicker the shield.  I seen them 2" thick on a 300lb hog.

How long is your draw? 47@29 is different than 47@26.

I too am a rookie but addicted hog hunter as you will be too and since you are unsure of your 47#er that you are comfortable shooting I thought Id inspire you with this pic. 47#s and a 650 grain MFX with a 2 blade on it. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/DSCN2599.jpg)

Shoot the one you have the most confidence in, either set-up will kill a hog deader than dead if you hit it right.

Go up top on Pow Wow and study Terry's hog vitals video till you see it in your sleep!

Ain't like no stinking whitetail... At Ray's, Hammond kept hammerin at us "ON the shoulder...not behind it"

I was so engrained to "behind" I had a hard time re-queueing my puter brain...

Yeah...note Izzy's bow weight....but also note his ARROW weight.  I was posting mostly about the entire set up....and still like #1 better IF you can shoot it where you want.

If you aren't sure, shoot the one you can come closest to driving tacks with.  Also, we wont just be stand hunting,....we will be stalking them as well. LOTS of morning and after noon hunting from the ground in between climbing stands for an hour and a half in the morn and afternoon.

For sure Terrys right on the money and you would be 100% better off shooting the heavier bow if you shoot it well. If you want to know hogs Terry will steer you right, I have learned a ton about hogs from talking to him on hunts.

On a side note, neither of those hogs were shot clean through, broadhead was bounced back from the off side shield. To be honest Im probably gonna be toting my 52# Griffin on my next hog hunt. Im just letting you know that it can be done but keep in mind, no animal has ever been killed "Too Dead", the heavier the bow the better. Like Terry said, shoot the one you drive tacks with.

i appreciate all the good info which i knew i would get from you guys. here's some more from me:
i can shoot both set ups about equally as far as accuracy, my problem is that when i'm shooting the 53# my shoulder gives out a lot sooner. they were 60# limbs and i had them reduced but i still eventually get sore and that leads to some sloppy shots. even though i know i won't be shooting dozens of arrows a day, i just feel better shooting the 47# anytime anywhere. some of it is mental but i think we all have that issue.
my draw is 47# at 27"
both bows actually take down and fit into one custom case so bringing both is not an issue.

Use the 1st set up. You have plenty of time to get your confidence up with it. Is it really that different from the 47# bow? You didn't say whether it was a recurve or longbow. But it really shouldn't matter, just shoot it rather than the 47# till the hunt and your confidence will improve.
I'd much rather shoot a heavier bow and increase chances of 2 holes in the hog. Beats the heck out of trailing one with only 1 hole.

Vote heavier bow for sure. Just don't talk to RC first. Some folks have knowledge & ability I don't. He does. Good hog pix, bow, & arrow combo Izz!

John

I will let you know in a couple weeks. I am headed for the strip shortly with a 45#@27" - 1918 arrows @585 grains with 175 VPA's.

Never even seen a wild hog so we are both in kinda same position.   :dunno:

Good luck MARK

Either will do the job. I would shoot what you have the most confidence in hitting what your shooting at with.RC
