has anyone noticed black widows requiring a stiffer spined arrow?
I know my instructions for my 2000 model claim that they require a stiffer arrow. I've been told they used to say not to shoot wood arrows. However I've not found it to be that big of a deal. My BW is #46 and I shoot a 600 Beman MFX or a 2016 aluminum arrow. They probably do use a stiffer arrow but you are going to shoot to find the correct spined arrow anyway so for me it's no problem.

The spine arrow a bow needs is required by how close or past center shot it is cut to. All black widows except the psr and pl are cut past center so they will need a stiffer arrow than a bow that is just cut to center.
i have 2 psax which both bareshaft tune about 15# above the recommended stu miller calculator. they are cut 3/16" past center plus using higher performance strings.
All my mid 40s bows will tune just fine with .500 spine arrows, except my PMAX which wants a .400. Besides being cut past center, Widows have high brace heights which I believe may also contribute to their preferance for heavier spines.
1. The bows I have had wanted less spine than Stu's calculator showed, but that has been typical of every bow I have tested using carbon with HFOC. I shot about 50-55# and use 400 spine carbon with a good amount of weight up front and 29.5-30" shafts. It is a stiffer arrow than I shoot on my hybrid long bows, but they are not cut much past center like the PCH and PSA's I have had. I didn't see much difference in what the BW's liked vs. other equally cut past center recurves.
My #44 PTFX loves 2117s, which should be too stiff. They bareshaft real well, so that is what I use.
I believe the distance cut past center has a great deal to do with it also.
My PSAs and my Silvertips are cut -3/16" past center and both like .400 spined carbon arrows. Brace height and limb design also enter into it, but for my money, the 3/16 past center is the biggest factor.
I always heard the same but found they shoot pretty much the same as my other bows. I shoot around 50 @@29 and use GT 3555 100 gn inserts and 125 heads
I think that I recall on the Black Widow tuning video Ken Beck mentioned that Widows generally require a stiffer spined arrow than other bows of the same poundage.
I shoot 2016s from my PSA X and Bob Lee. Both are 50 @ 28. I have some old 2117 autum orange shafts I may fletch up and try.
All of mine like a spine 25/30# stiffer spine
