Title: Where to get a leather or beavertail grip put on a riser?
Post by: Pokerdaddy on May 30, 2012, 09:37:00 PM
I recently picked up a wonderful RER XR.  I love everything abou the bow and the way it shoots for me, with one exception.  The grip is slick and could stand to be beefed up just a whisker.

I've never seen an RER with leather from Kevin, so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with one of our bowyer/sponsors gripping a bow for them.  Bowyers, feel free to chime in if you'd be able to help me out.

If you have pics of some great post-build grip work I'd love to see 'em.

Thanks, Andrew

Contact Chuck at Two Tracks.  I had him do my RER a few years ago.  His work is always top notch, and reasonable.

Thanks Mike and Burton.  I'll probably either have Chuck or Big Jim do it.  I can stop by Chuck's on the way to Compton, or contact BJ and ask if he can do it at the rendezvous.

Not to put a damper on the auction for the kids, but that doesn't look dried and tanned to me, so it's probably not a good starter tail. Heck of a deal on a big tail though!!!

If Andrew wanted to do his own first tail, I'd suggest he buy one off Big Jim's website as they are dried, tanned, and ready to wrap. It sounds like he would like to leave this one for the pros. I understand this as I'm still doing leather wraps getting my skills up for my first beaver tail wrap. It's very costly to make mistakes with that material!

Personally, I'd consider checkering or stippling on a high grip recurve before a beaver tail wrap. Then again that wasn't the question asked.

Hopefully I see all you MLA guys at Comptons!
Thom

I used ostrich leg leather for a grip recently.  I picked it up at Tandy for $12 and it had enough leather for two grips.  It looks pretty sweet, sort of reptilian, but I don't have a pic of it.  If you're still looking it's worth checking out.  The bowyers may be able to do it for you if you supply the leather...
