As the first forum closes tonight I am sure there will be a lot of fingers poised over send buttons at 9:59:59. Good luck to all. If you have been waiting to grab that item at the last minute, man up and do it right. Beat the bid by five or ten dollars. This auction is for the kids not adding to our list of toys. Enjoy competition, but lets do our best for the kids.
Well said! They need all the help they can get and then some! :clapper:
  :archer2:

I put all my bids in on the first or second day. I'm shocked that most haven't been challenged! I can see sniping on other auction type sites, but this is an auction to raise money for sick children and their families. If you want it BID on it. If you don't win it oh well that's more for the kids.
Just my thinking anyway
Glenn
maineac, I agree totally.
Yeah, there's just something creepy and wrong about sniping at a charity auction....
I think that maybe the rules to the auction need to be modified in the future to make the minimum bids increase in value as the time closes in the auction. So bids would have to increase by more per bid in the last hours of the auction.
Might be hard to police but it could be done.

It's all been in great fun over the years... and some guys get skunked waiting till close to the "closing time" and the post doesn't get the right time stamp in Cyber space...and they loose.
I've not done sniping...but I guess it goes both ways... if you loose to a sniper, more $$ went to St. Jude and that's the purpose... so it IS all about the money... getting the most for St. Judes Hospital.
We've had a BUNCH of threads over the years where guys UPPED their OWN bids--bid against themselves.
This takes heart in a time of lean pockets.
I don't really care about the last minute loss of something. That is the fun of an auction for many and if they find it exciting, great. My point is to do it well and for the intent of the auction. Don't wait to beat someone out for something you want by a buck. If you want it, great, but throw some extra to St. Judes for what they do.
FWIW, I agree with you maineac. I don't like the idea of outbidding someone by only $1 at the last minute. But, I don't have a problem with anyone coming in at the last minute and submitting a bid ..... that's just more $$ for the kids.
I do want to also say that I don't think anyone is on here bidding to get some fantastic price on something they would be buying anyway. MOST if not all the items go for more than new, some WAY MORE than new prices. I applaud everyone who donates their money.
Great job guys
I know things are tight in the country right now, but we can do this in $10 steps just like we can do this in $1,000 steps guys.
WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF WE SET A RECORD THIS YEAR $10 AT A TIME!!!!
I think that sniping is in good fun for the most part and for a fella to get bent outa shape over getting sniped, you shoulda bid way higher to begin with. :readit:
Well said Izzy. More money is more money. It is for the kids.
I'm even bidding on my own item
Give until it hurts and then give some more! :D
I think what Mike and co are saying is don't come to a charity auction trying to find a bargain! I agree. Snipe away, but snipe high!
It's all a mind game. If you're game, you don't mind. If you mind, bid high from the start.
The final bid is the final bid, no matter who gets it. $1 more is $1 more for St. Jude's. I already hurt...now it's just how much I can take. Some can't take any and for good reason. A $20 donation from someone unemployed is far greater than a $200 bid from a successful business owner or someone financially secure. But every bid should be welcomed, and none condemned.
footnote:
Made it to SC ok and trying to work my brother's MAC....weird.

I didn't think of it like that... You make a valid point. As long as everyone bids their highest the first time, then there shouldn't be any hard feelings. Thanks for the eye opener...
Raising money for kids=Good. Fun competetion with some back and forth=Good. It's ALL good. :bigsmyl:
Rules are rules, and if you get outbid within the rules, no reason to complain, let alone feel bitter. But I can think of one rule change that might increase the excitement along the lines of a "live" auction, increase the funds raised, and give those who feel sniped a chance to do something constructive about it. Since the bids are time-stamped, after the "closing" time, allow a set number of minutes for counter-bids. Then, let successive counter bids continue until an offer stands without being topped for that number of minutes.

Once again, not trying to upset any one. I have no problem being outbid, even by a buck. But in the spirit of the auction, I am trying to urge everyone to add a bit more. Skip a couple of coffees or a snack or two if times are lean and give it to help others.
Geez guys....lets just enjoy the auction for the kids please
I tried! Got out bid during my little girls birthday party. Never made it back in time!
There is forum 2 next everyone!
I think if there is going to be bitter feelings over being out bid by $1 then have minimum bid increments. 0-$50 should have $1 between bids.$50-$100 $2 increments, $100-$250 $5 increments and so on or bid high enough no one is going to challenge your bid.
It's the $1 snipe that I think causes the frustration.
So, if a person snipes, well, snipe with class and bid at least $5 more.
Bid for the kids.
Matt
If your going to snipe just use a BIG bullet
Like others said...... It's all about the kids

Yeah, that's the way to go.
Snipe BIG!
Matt
I thought we were RAISING money for kids. Sounds like everyone should get a trophy so their feelings don't get hurt. I learned from some of the best on my very first auction, don't be a whiner, have fun, raise money, focus on what really matters, the kids. :D
DOC NOC, You got it right.
One feller out bid himself at least 3 times to win a custom bow.$100 a pop. that was a good thing from the guy who could. This auction thing is pretty cool,Shows the good spirit of good folk.
CTT
I'm just glad we figured out how to stop the server from crashing like it did for the early years....so many bids piled in at the last minute that lots of bids got hung up and the time stamp was some times up to 10 minutes late for a lot of bids...lots of money was left on the table back then.
Now that we have it on a different domain, more work for us of course, we don't have that problem anymore.
I'm gonna snipe one or two of my bids! Maybe more LOL!
Well, I was getting outbid on all items I bid on. So, I just offered to match the highest bid on one of my listed items. I'm sure it's gonna hurt...but it's for the kids after all.
I'm guilty but won't do it any more after the next 4 times.........:-)
Very well said, leaves you saying "crap" or worse. I had my bid that has stood for several days out sniped in the last 2 minutes of Auction 2 to tonight. I think I was 5 seconds too late to counter-snipe, :biglaugh:
But I guess all is fair since the kids are reaping the ultimate benefits.
I goofed on the EST thing too! Last night I won two. I missed out tonight but have bids in for tomorrow..so snipers get ready to help the kids!!! :) ...or happily just let me do some more from my end :)
I'd like to thank all of the contributors for their generosity and the mods and admins here for making this so easy to help out with a worthy cause!!!
Sincerely,
Kevin
I sniped my own snipe! Dang it!

:) Easy there Matt :) LOL!!
I checked an item an hour to late too. Oh well, I'm sited in now. :bigsmyl:
I've been on the road for the 1st 2 closings and will likely miss tonight as well. But I'll sure try hard the last two nights!
I generally will run items up as far as I am comfortable early in the bidding. But I sometimes will save a shot for a final salvo in case someone else jumps in at the end. And I've also been known to bump my own bid in the final minutes to try to keep the snipers on their toes.
It's all in good fun with the ultimate goal being to help the kids. If I end up with a cool item on some, that is just a bonus. Bid early, bid high, and fire a final shot aggression the end!
I learned along time ago.....there are no friends in an auction...... :biglaugh: Bid high....bid often!
I got by the snipers and got some more strings from Oliverstacey :)
BTW...I don't remember the TGr that suggested rounding up...but I added $10 mor dollars due to that suggestion...more than covering PP fees for St. Jude...GREAT idea for dumbing down the math and helping the kids!!!! Whooo Hooooo this feels good!!!! :) Keep it up folks!!!! :)

I guess that was what got me. But I'm over it now, different strokes for different folks. That's what makes it fun for them I guess, and I'm glad they're contributing. I just gave my money instead.
I got outbid several times tonight in the last few minutes by some extremely generous individuals. Thank God for those wonderful guys who made very sizable increases every time they bid. It makes me feel good to see that spirit of giving for such a worthy cause.
Allan
I was one of the snipers Allan, sure hope you're not PO'd. The way we went at it meant the kids were the true winners.
I was in a business meeting last Thursday and it was noticed that I kept checking my BB. Let's just say that those present got a quick lesson about Tradgang and this great cause. It makes very proud to be a part of this community and everything you all do.
