Title: Look what we found in the woods!
Post by: Dimondback on May 30, 2012, 11:27:00 AM
Not hunting/archery related....yet...give him a few years though.... :) . We were walking through a thicket on a recent trip to the Rapidan river and almost stepped on this little guy. We never heard "momma" blow or run off but I am sure she was close by. He never blinked, twitched an ear and barely appeared to take a breath...talk about survival instinct! After a few pics we let him be and continued catching "brookies".

I love seeing these pics.  I'm still waiting for the day when I find one in the woods.  Until then, I will just keep enjoying everyone else's pictures.

What our 'anti' friend can't wrap their tiny brains around is how the devil we as blood-thirsty killers can see that in nature and go "awww" or revel in the next generation of animal life and be so stirred emotionally to be privilaged to watch or see them in their natural state.

I've never seen them that young myself...and would consider it a gift from God to do so. I've jumped a few older young'uns that scampered away in amazing bounds and then stood there looking at me like "who dat?"

This time of year, last year, while fly fishing for trout, I saw one just like that under a rhododendron near Stone Mountain, NC. The little fawn had no idea what I was. I slowly made my way up to him, reached out and touched him and he never moved except for blinking his eyes. I never thought to snap a photo, and I wish I had.
Thanks for the cool photo of an awesome moment.

I have seen a couple like that....it's just so neat to see how they don't move or do anything to give themselves away. Really a neat thing to come upon!

We would see them from time to time swathing hay when I was younger. Always watched to make sure we didn't run over them. The mama's would always hang around and you should should see the pain they can inflict on a farm dog that ventures too close. Impressive. We would try to back out and not stress the deer, and by the next day she would have the baby relocated. Such an awesome sight to see. We would try to avoid touching them or leaving scent though, they need all the help surviving they can get!

When I was hunting in Germany I went out early one afternoon. A doe was browsing right below the tree stand, so I whistled a bit up on the road and kicked some gravel around until she moved off. Climbed the stand and sat until nearly dark. The doe came back to the stand and two fawns stood up. They'd been right by the ladder all afternoon and I never saw them. Did a little soft whistling again and she took her babies and walked off. Totally enjoyed that moment.

Wish I could have gotten a pic like you did, but that was pre-cell-phone and I didn't have a camera with me.

Cool! I've walked right up on two over the years, usually while being impatient and wandering around Northwestern MI during turkey season. Never had a camera back then...

I've ran across a few like that over the years, couple times Momma was off a ways stopping and snorting.  Makes for a good teaching moment if the kids are along.  Nice pic.

Very beautiful! Besides my little girl, whitetail fawns are the most beautiful creatures out there.

Great photo!
I almost stepped on a duck this evening while out packrafting...turns out she was sitting on 8 eggs.  She watched me closely while I backed out of there to find another way to the water.

welcome all!...thought you might appreciate it....we didn't touch him as we didn't want to leave any scent on em'. We were constantly looking around to ensure we didn't get "hoofed" to death by mamma!  :)
