Im courious if you guys carry tomahawks on your trips to the woods. Im wanting to make or get one. Not just a regular hawk though a nice one.
Show me your pics of hawks, and do you know someone who forges them?
Danny, Ron LaClair carries a very nice working hawk...you can check it out on his shrewbows website.
I've got a fancy one a friend in Washington state built for me....one of the finest pieces of steel I've ever owned:

Wow JC that's nice. Does the wood match your bow?
Yea i want something like that. I'd like to do the wood work and finish work my self.
Watch out for Ron's hawks, I think their all left-handed :bigsmyl:
JC, that's a work of art! I'd want to hang it on the wall instead of using it. Thanks for the pic.
Here's mine. No where near as nice as Joe's, but a great allround user. Hand-forged by a good friend of mine from London (also an archer) out of D2 steel. You can literally shave with this thing!

Mine's always with me. :scared:

ok who got the sharp end ron? :(
My son and I use Ron's 'Hawk for everything from camping to turkey and deer hunting to the trapline...it is a functional piece fo gear for sure!
My son taped a piece of red yarn to his handle...he got tired of looking through the leaves for it when he missed a stump ;0)
Danny after reading a thread like this one i went and got me this viking bearded axe to go with me funny medieval clothes :D
I have learned that a good hawk / axe with a hammer on the other end is almost a must!!! I always have mine with me....if i had to take only my knife or my axe into the woods it would definately be my axe.
I paid extra to get this one made with a deferential heat treatment so the edge and hammer would stand up to hard use. Plus i learned that with these bearded axes they were designed this way so you could choke up on the handle to do fine chopping / cutting and still protect your knuckles!

Lance
Lance,
cool one! That is the longest handled Ulu I have ever seen
I thought about using one, and was not sure how much use it would get, so I started out buying a really cheap 'hawk to use last year. I ended up using it a lot more than I thought I would, especially clearing shooting lanes and brushing out ground blinds. Now a Shrew Hawk is on my wish list.
Hide wrapped Dog wood handle with artifact head. Just for show!

Of course,,, OSAGE handle with Great Grandfathers head. He was a carpenter and used it daily in his work. I now use it for hanging tree stands, clearing shooting lanes and at camp.
My working hawk!

Any More?
I really like the looks of the pipe hawk fancy heads, but it to be a working hawk.
Here's mine, a gift from my wife a few years ago. I don't carry it when hunting, but it's always in camp if I need it.I added the orange stained bands and the leather handle wrap which makes the handle a little less slick.

JC, yours is a work of art, and Ron's looks ultra functional, and Joe how much more importance could a hawk have, than to have one owned by your grandfather?.Too cool! Nice hawks Fellas.
Here's mine.

Nothin' fancy just hand forged...Doc

hmmmm If I keep reading this thread I'm gonna have to get a hawk
What's the advantage of a tomahawk over a quality small axe/hatchet, such a Gränsfors Bruks Wildlife?
How does your 'hawk handle normal camp chores compared to an axe/hatchet?
Being able, in theory, to replace the handle in the field? Made for throwing? Just for the cool factor?
I would say it's a cross between easily replaceing the handle and the much lighter weight of the hawk head. Most tommahawk heads weigh under a pound where most hatchet heads are 1 1/2 - 2 pounds.
I had a little "mouse hawk" that weighed 14 ounces handle and all!!!!! SWEETEST Little Thing.....I never should have given it away.....
It's more enjoyable to forge your own hawk :)
Here is one I made awhile back. This will be the first season I will get to use it.

Ya know it's threads like this that make me realize I need one of these. Got all knids great ones here I see. Doc love the heart. And Straitshot yours is great can ya smoke it? Now I have to go off and hunt that other site to see what it has on the block.<><
Frank, same feeling here  :campfire:
I need one of those!
F-Manny
JC that is some fine work there. The pipe hawks aren't as versatile as a hammer poll, but they purty up real nice. Good mojo.
For fancy or seriously serviceable hawks look up Beaver Bill Keeler in Ohio. He has everything from very plain camp or belt axes to the finest fanciest presentation iron.
Oh man, I just saw Straitshot's, that thing is gorgeous!
i have great rail road spike hawk made by Skillet that i carry alot, it was a gift from Woodchucker and the crew on the hunt last year.

here is one built for me by a good friend of mine. it has a kind of blunt spike for ripping apart stumps and wood without gettinf hung up, also is
razor sharp!

Tippit i agree i would like to forge my own.
Having no forge or any no how in forges hampers me making the head myself.
I hope to get a rough shapped one that i can do the clean up on.
Im wanting one like straitshot has. Being forged or heat treated if its poured it should do well.
I really like the pipe ax look, but dont care if its a pipe ax.
Been thinking about a hawk for a while. Have been admireing the Shrew hawk. I like how it has almost a hammer on the back side. If anyone else has any feed back on it, how they've used it (how much abuse it can take) any info would be appreciated. thanks... matty
Native. the Shrew hawk is inexpensive and really fun. I now have two. Been carrying the first one a bunch since I got it. Use the blunt side for pounding stakes (tent). Use the sharp side for bopping squirrels, once the nutter makes contact. Besides,....never know when a griz might attack me here in WI and I need it to protect myself.

Any more guys?

Is that a bottle opener on the back end of your hawk?
I like my cold steel norse hawk, great thrower and chopper!
