Title: Making a Leather Tab
Post by: Caughtandhobble on May 25, 2012, 04:31:00 PM
Hey Yall,

I thought that I would share how I make a leather tab for anyone that's interested. It's really simple to make a good tab that is custom fit for you.

The materials needed are a good piece of leather, sharp knife, pattern of desired tab, good leather conditioner, Bohning Seal Tite string wax, the one with silicone, leather lace.

-Trace pattern on leather
-Cut out tab (leave the finger hole small)
-Soak in water
-Dry in sun light
-Apply leather conditioner
-Dry in sun light again
-Apply leather conditioner again
-Dry in sun light
-Apply Bohning wax
-Soak in water, then shoot while tab is wet and it will form to your hand.
-Punch a hole in the top of tab and use leather lace to make a loop for hanging it on your bow, you'll never loose the tab if you do this.
-Apply Bohning wax one more time after the tab dries.

Once you have done this you will have a tab that will be very slick and it will last a very long time. Good luck and have fun making your own tabs;)b

Do you stick your hand through the loop so that it rests on your wrist while shooting?

After looking at your pics, I thought that would be a nice feature. Like you said..can't lose it on the bow and then you couldn't lose it on your hand.

No I just let it hang down while I'm shooting, although that's a good idea. I just make it big enough to go over the limb then take it back between the limb a string to secure it. I don't ever loose tabs anymore this way.

Give it a shot, they're really easy to make. There's just some self gratification about making you own traditional equipment.

very good post! I'm going to try and make one too since my current platform tab is for split fingers and I need a 3under  :)

I just made these 2 tabs from some Oil tanned leather that I bought a Tandy leather, I added a Can't Pinch seperator from a couple of tabs that I had laying around!
