Title: Steel Force opinions for my setup
Post by: yankeevol on May 25, 2012, 02:00:00 PM
I wondered if y'all had any opinions about this 4-blade, 125 grain head out of my setup (see sig). Whitetails only and razor sharp on my KME.

 http://www.steelforce.com/products/premiumheads.html

Has some pros for a low poundage 4-blade set up: Good (close to 3:1) profile and relatively small bleeders. Flies very well.

Thoughts?

I really liked them. Easy to sharpen, they dont rust, and cut a nice hole. My wife still shoots them out of one of her setups and loves them. I have shot 3 different models of SF over the years and never had a complaint. In my top 3 favorite heads.

I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about the brand.

If I shot screw in heads they would be one of the ones I'd be looking at.

The blades are fairly thick....which is a good thing.

Personally....
I'd lean towards a non vented blade like a Stinger killer bee.
I just don't like the hiss from vented heads.
I know lots of game has gone down with hissing heads ....I just don't like it.

The killer bees' bleeders are vented so there might still be some noise.

I like silence...

Great broadheads. I shot a few whitetails with them out of my Black Widow recurves.55 and 67#,with 2213 and 2216 Eastons.Pass throughs with a nice exit and bloodtrail.I used the Sabertooths and the premium 125's.PM sent to you.

Have you shot the Killer Bees? They are terrible...in my humble opinion of course. I hate to say it, because I love Magnus heads, but they give up blade thickness in order to get a non-vented head. I did some shooting with them earlier this year and was really disappointed.

The regular Stingers and Buzzcuts are great. I've never notice any hissing at all. I'm sure my shield cut feathers are much louder than my broadheads.

That being said, I did hear significant hissing from some Muzzy 4-Blades recently (the trocar tip style). I traded them for more Stingers.

To the OP, those Steel Force look good!

OK

Nope never have shot em.
I woulda thought they'd be fine being a magnus product....I'm suprised!

Glad I know now..lol

ok well scratch the kb's..lol

I'd still look for a quiet head..maybe the steelforce are.
I've just never been lucky enough to find a quiet vented head.

I was thinking just like you until I wasted $35 on a pack, haha.  I was disappointed, but live and learn.

What heads are you shooting now? We shoot similar set ups and I'm always looking to try something different.

I shoot glue on.
I used to shoot 190 grain heads.
VPA's were great!

This year I want to lighten up and get a little flatter traj.

I wanted to go with a 3 blade 125 grain.
But they're all vented...tried a trailmaker but they hiss a bit too.

So.. I'm trying a Zwickey no-mercy 4 blade.
They were the only fixed bleeder blade  solid blade glue on I could find.
Needs a long taper to fill the hole in the ferrule, but that's no biggie.
We'll see...

Steelforce are excellent BHDs.    Very well built and unquestionably one of the sharpest out of the pack BHDs available. I shoot the big screw-on single bevels (250 gr.). Broken glass sharp, and the solid .080 thick blade is basically indestructible.

The Steelforce Phathead is arguably the best 4 blade head made today.

Don't let the small size/profile fool you. The main blade thickness is incredible.

I've never had anything short of full passthru's with Phatheads and I shoot low weight.

You can get bleeders for the 190gr, if you call SF and request them.

If you look on the "big box store" sites and read the reviews, they're always 100's of reviews for the Phathead and they always get near 5 stars.

If you call Nick, you can do some special ordering. For example, his regular 125gr Phathead is a larger size head, but I have him make me 125gr in the little, more squat Phathead.

I have about 30 different setups. But the Phathead is as good of a 4 blade that you'll ever shoot out of a traditional bow. Weights from 75-200grs. Hard to beat that range. Hunting sharp out of the pack too, along with the ability to send back for resharpening if you so choose to "stimulate the economy".
