Title: Best Sharpener ever?
Post by: Kamm1004 on May 23, 2012, 06:35:00 PM
Just curious what you guys use and think is the best sharpener/sharpening system for broadheads and hunting/skinning knives alike? I use the jewelstik and love it, but i always finish them with my grandpa's old shapening stone which is a chinese waterstone i think its 12000 grit. Then i use a leather strop to polish them off. I'm looking to get a new sharpener so let me know what you think. thanks!

I think the "BEST" ever is a simple file, anyone can use it with little to no instructions. It doesn't always get things "super sharp" but IMHO will always get it sharp enough to do the job. That being said I use paper wheels at home and cary a file for field touch ups.

so, how sharp do you guys think it needs to be? I shave with  straight edge and have no problems sharpening that, however i cant ever get my magnus heads "razor" sharp, only what you would call "sharp enough". it gets kinda frustrating   :banghead:

For simple and inexpensive, it's hard to beat the RADA wheel. May not get things as sharp as a KME, but much more portable for use in the field and it's hard to imagine that a broadhead sharpened with it would ever not be sharp enough to get the job done.

Explained on another thread that sharpening is only as good as the person doing it. I sharpen surgical instruments since 1993. Exactly what makes KME such a good product. Quality with the added patience, ways & means of Ron.

Well, that isn't true.  KME makes a knife sharpener that can be used for broadheads.

so the KME knife sharpening system works on knives and broadheads but the one made especially for broadheads wont work on knives as well? which would be best to buy for the best of both worlds?

KME knife sharpener is the ONLY one to buy for "both worlds". Will sharpen two blade BH's as well as knives.
Broad head sharpener will only do BH's.

If you can only buy 1 get the Knife sharpener. You will not regret it. Any problems call Ron, you'll be a pro in no time!

I don't only build knives but dozzens of trade points a year.
For hunting heads for years and years I just used a file. But 6 or 7 years ago I started useing a sander. Do this if you want razor shape. It's not quick but not other way of getting razor sharp. STAYS AND EASY TO RESHJARPEN ONCE DONE.
I start out with 80 or 100 grit. This evens up and puts a good starting edge on it.
Then I move down to 220 grit.
Then to 400 grit.
I keep my angle 15%. I know most people need a guide
You can go down lower in grit but I can't see any difference.
You can strop if you like but I don't even to this any more. You get a mirror finish thats imposable to get a shaper blade. I'm not saying other methods don't shapen as good but like this once do'nt if you don't destory the edge. There do quicker way to resharpen.
When ever you need to reshapen it only takes a second with the 400.
Just the way I come to do it it works for me. I've used them all I don't think I'll ever use anything else.

Roy, I've actually heard of that system before just not with a grinder. They just use sandpaper taped down and use it like a stone. I think it's called the "scary sharp" system

Yes, the KME knife sharpener will sharpen single bevel heads, no problem. Once you get the burr pushed to the flat side opposite the single bevel just hone it off making sure you hold the head flat against the hone / strop. You will LOVE the KME system. Buy the standard stone kit and then a couple of the extra course diamond stones and you are all set. I use the extra course for 90% of the work to be done, then switch to medium india, then the white hard arkansas to finish.

Biggest mistake most folks make is leaving the course stones too fast. You must make sure you have a full burr on both sides before leaving the course stones. I can shave hair with the course diamond stone edge. The you simply refine and polish the edge you have established. Once you have done the hard work of establishing a perfect bevel on all your cutting tools touch ups are 5 minutes tops !

Without making Ron blush I just cannot say enough good things about his KME system ! Best tool ever devised on this planet, PERIOD ! My knives have never been sharper, never been sharp from stem to stern, even 9" fillet knives ! Once I get started I enjoy it so much I usually run out of knives and would almost sharpen the butter knives in the house too. JMHO

Unanswerable question ... that depends on the steel you are sharpening. Different steels favor different sharpening techniques.

I'm a big fan of a mounted inclined belt sander w/60micron belt.  Then take the burr off with a high speed buffing wheel.

Did about 30 knives in a half hour yesterday.

    For 6 bucks you can get shaving sharp knives and heads and ANYONE can figure them out.
