Title: Pigs in California/first hunt: how do I start?
Post by: trad_in_cali on May 19, 2012, 01:12:00 PM
hello,
I'm a long time shooter/serious hiker/backpacker, but have no experience hunting. Always wanted to, but living in a city (San Francisco) and not having a car and not knowing trad hunters, I never had the chance to.
I really want to go. I was wondering if you know of an outfitter I can get to (even by plane) for  hog hunt (my favorite meat). I'll need to get supplies, but mostly need coaching, training or some kind of support for dressing the animal.
No feedlot fenced hunting.
I know you guys can give me some advice. I'm listening. Thank you so much!
Marco

Get in touch with my bud, Keith hartman, adventures west recreation. He's not a trad hunter but has some pig land he may be able to get you on near paso robles. Is be going myself if I could find a plane ticket under 900.00$.

Hillside Hog Haven is in Gyersville just north of you. He shoots traditional too.

No answer yet from Bob. Just wondering about other options.
Thanks!

Bob is already booked for next year. There are a number of others offering free range pig hunts too-no feeders and no fences-get on google and ferret them out and call them-few will answer emails. There is 'choppers' ranch in Hollister too and 3 ranchers north of Healdsburg.

OK, if anyone has personal experience with any of them, I'd appreciate the info. You can PM me or post here. if the hunt is within a 2-3 hr. flight from San Francisco, I may also consider it.
Thanks!

Kinda close to riverside,  me and my girlfriend are going.  She hasn't killed anything big yet, figured it would be a good start for her.  Will see how it goes, cant go wrong with the price.

If it is the place I think it is (in Riverside), it is not what you are looking for...definitely good for a first timer. More of a "harvest".

I'd highly recommend getting on Bob's waiting list. I'll be seeing him tomorrow at the Western States Round-up and I'll try to remember to pester him about making some room for you. Have you seen Glory Hog 2 yet? The whole video is filmed on his ranch and it is all trad. It can be ordered off of stalkerrecurves.com

What's up Marco? Cool, planning a hunt!
I read a thread here recently about a guy who took his kid pig hunting north of here... Near healdsburg.
Anyway - good luck, let me know what you plan.
See you at the range!

Hey, thanks, I'm actually renting a car and coming up to the Western Rendezvouz. I'll be there on Sunday! I'll come and say hi, you had a great booth last year.
Marco

Hey Xavier, getting organized. Wanna go?

Yep the Riverside place is fenced and I hear the animals are almost tame, never been there but that's what I found looking around on the internet.

Haven't been to Tejon but i hear good things about it.

I went to Vandenberg AFB this past March and the area seems very promising.

Are there any other places to hunt pigs say, south of San Jose?
