Congratulations to Allan DeVore for another addition to his family of Shrew's. This beautiful Super Shrew Safari is destined to accompany him on his next hunting excursion.
The dark Koa veneers over the bamboo and carbon core of the bow are stunning. The combination of the bow bolt and phenolic riser gives the bow a reassuring heft that is sure to add to it's stability. The addition of black buffalo horn overlays on the tips and riser identify it as the "Safari" model.
This July Allan will be taking this bow to Australia after Water Buffalo. I'm looking forward to reading about his adventures when he returns.

Ron,
I sure like the pictures, but I can't shoot them! :saywhat:
Allan
Slobber, drool, slurp. Hmmmm, everything looks great except the draw weight (needs to slim down about 25# for me and I used to shoot an 85# Howard Hill longbow!). Wow, that bows a beauty.  :notworthy:
OMG! That is some beautiful Koa, congrats Allan, but that 70# makes my shoulder hurt just reading about it and I used to shoot 80+# when I was younger. 60# is about all I can handle for very long now. I can still pull and hold the heavy weights though, not bad for a 61 year old fat man,LOL.
P.S. Hey Ron, you better send along one of the big knives instead of the neck knife you pictured. Allan's chasing big critters with that bow. ;)
Beautiful! And perfect specs.
That is a BEAUTY, Allan!
Hope to see pics in the future of you, the Shrew Safari, and a Water Buff you have "reduced to ambient temperature"!
Have a great hunt!

Ray, that's not the Lil' Shaver it's the new "Big Shaver", 4" blade, 8" OA
QuoteRon, I sure like the pictures, but I can't shoot them! Allan
It's on it's way Allan... :)
Ray and Danny,
I will be 60 this year, so that weight is a little tough on me too, since I don't shoot heavy bows much except when I am going on a hunt for something that requires it. I used to shoot a little heavier bow than this for everything, but that was long ago. I still have a number of bows that are around this poundage, but they mostly hang on my rack these days. I am still in the process of working up my strength for the July hunt, and I am right on schedule compared to last year when I went.
I would love to shoot a 55 or 60 pound bow on my buffalo hunt, but those big animals require more to get the heavy arrows up to a high enough velocity to get good penetration. Fred Eichler's 54# Palmer may be enough to kill any North American animal, but I doubt he would use it to hunt an Asiatic Buffalo! My right shoulder is literally popping and protesting, but it is getting stronger. After multiple injuries and surgery, it hurts every day of my life, regardless of what I do, so I might as well make it hurt for a good purpose.
This bow may not get a lot of use, because of its poundage, but the fact it will see the excitement of my second trip to Oz is good enough.
Allan
P.S. Thanks, Daryl. I will definitely post pictures and hope to have something worthwhile to show.
Nice!!!!
Beauty Allan! Wish you would have it for tomorrow. 2 pounds heavier than your prior buff bow, right? Nice Koa!
Wow Allen, another beauty of a bow and hunt. Good luck!
I have a Shrew with the carbon, phenolic riser and bow bolt. Mine is 58" and just a wee bit lighter - OK much lighter! :bigsmyl: I shoot it better than any other longbow I have ever tried. The veneers look great.
Another beauty Allan! I hope all the training goes well, and I look forward to your sharing of the trip!
That thing is drop dead beautiful. I'd be almost afraid I'd scratch it up. Gotta save that pic!
AWESOMEEEE
Shuuuweee!
That turned out to be a very beautiful bow.
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Love that beautiful bow. :clapper: :clapper:
Great looking bow!
Really nice
Mighty fine bow.RC
Nice bow
Allan: get out here sometime to shoot and bring the new Safari. I would like to try 70# if you don't mind my feet on the riser :)

Wow!! That's a nice un!!
SWEET!!!
Another good looking Safari.
That is a real beauty, Ron and Allen...I think I would have to take a road trip.
The buff hunt sounds awesome...You will certainly be well armed. What will your arrow weights / broadheads be?

Mike -- The Koa on this bow is from the same board as the handle slabs on the custom St. Jude knife you built me to go with two of my other Shrews, so your custom knife will be going "Down Under" with me in July and hopefully will be used to cut up another big buff! http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=110192;p=2
Allan
My arrow will be an Arrow Dynamics Hammerhead Trad with 100 grain brass insert plus 70 grain brass screw-on weight (screws into back of brass insert), aluminum collar, unibushing with g-nock, 4x4" fletch, and fletch wrap. Total weight of arrow -- 600 grains. The weight of the broadhead will be in addition and will depend on which broadhead I choose. The final three choices are the 300 grain VPA Penetrator, the 325 grain VPA 2 blade offset single bevel broadhead, or the 225 grain Tuffhead with 75 or 100 grain steel adapter. So the total weight of arrow with broadhead will be 900 to 925 grains. The velocity will only be 155 fps, give or take a few, but the distance I shot my last buff was only 17 yards, so the arrow won't lose much speed in reaching the target.
Allan
Oooooops
Oooooops x 2!
Darn good broadhead choices, there.
Hmmm, I'm working on my Easton Axis 600's (450 grains, 17%FOC) with 50 grain brass inserts, 145 grain points, 3 4.5 inch parabolic fletch out of my 44# 60" Super Shrew. Wow it's amazing how similar our set-ups are.  ;)
I'm sure my set-up will get adequate penetration on the gophers on my parents farm this summer. :bigsmyl:
Ray,
I'll loan you one of my arrows so you can see how it works with your bow. After all, they are both 60" Super Shrews! :biglaugh:
I have a couple of bows in the 44# range. I like them when I have to shoot hundreds of arrows in one session. Right now, I can only shoot about a dozen arrows from my Super Shrew Samurai that is 68# before my arms and shoulder start screaming and my arrows start spraying all over the target. Of course, it only takes one well-placed shot for a buffalo. In fact, an opportunity for even one shot after a long stalk on a buff is the best I can hope for.
Allan
P.S. Thanks to all those who have said nice things about the bow and/or wished me well on my trip. This is a great site with many wonderful people.
Good luck on the trip! What a fine peice of art you will be carrying with you. Absolutely beautiful!
Spectacular bow! Safe travels, good hunting!
Allan,
I hear you on the low weight and lot's of arrows. I shot our local 30 target 3D course twice on Friday (can't beat a $100 annual membership for all the shooting you want and 15 minutes from the house on one of the finest courses in MI) and I really appreciate that bow weight these days.
As mentioned above, enjoy your trip and we'll be waiting to hear your story.
Ray
Ray, where are you shooting?
Eric
Eric,
Dan and Donna Krogel have the Woodswalk Archery Range in Williamsburg. It's a great course through the woods and has some longer shots (about 45 yards-if you desire)to test your skill. They're great people. They have nice targets and the fee is $10 per visit if you don't buy the annual membership. They have the course set from sometime in April till the last day of September.
Ray
gotta love them shrews, ron and gregg are the best

Well, it is probably more like 70# since you are drawing it 30"
Congrats my friend!!! I look forward to hearing about your trip Allan. Take care
Kevin
Any care considerations with materials like buffalo horn? Can you get that setup in a 60# bow?
Good luck on your trip!!
That is beautiful!
