Title: Wood for kids arrows
Post by: LYONEL on May 17, 2012, 07:43:00 AM
Which wood for kids arrows ? Sitka Spruce for weight or Douglas Fir for toughness?

My advice is get whatever you can in the correct spine. Nothing will turn a kid away from archery quicker than poorly matched bow/arrows (fletched with vanes or bad spine). And when they break just make or buy more. Get the kids in on the building process too.

For super light kid's bows I like the 1/4" wood arrows.

Yes and yes, and don't forget the poplar shafts that Magnus (TG sponsor) is selling also.

1/4" dowels from the hardware store are good, but require a whole bunch of straightening.

Green (TG sponsor) does a superb job making kid stick arrows.

Mike beat me to the Green response, also Ramin dowels are good.

Mike,

You gotta make one of those oak board cabinet roller straightener/true checkers I made. That and an ACE roller atraightener will wok magic on those 1/4" dowels. Just search through them for good grain.

I've seen some of Green's spine in the upper teens, which is great that light spined arrows are out there from a GREAT arrowsmith.

I like cedar.  Still a fair amount of it around in 5/16.

I buy 1/4" poplar dowels from Lowes 48" long for 67 cents. cut in half and make two arrows. Dress them up a little with cresting and they are fine arrows for the kids.
