Title: Hunter or shooter ?
Post by: lpcjon2 on May 16, 2012, 07:20:00 PM
I got to wondering. How many are hunters and how many are just archery shooters?

Edit; shooter meaning you just target or comp shoot-non hunter.

Hunter first.
Shooter second, for fun and fellowship!

Depends on what ya mean by shooter.

In my opinion, you "should" be a shooter prior to being a hunter.

That don't mean ya gotta go to competitions. Just means you need to learn to be a proficient shot before ya hunt.

I guess I'd have to say - I'm a shooter first, and a hunter second, but all my shooting is always in preparation for the hunt.

I agree with you SaltyDawg.  I'd hunt more if I had more time; and I do some varminting that feels more like shooting, but I am a bowhunter.

All of my shooting is in prep for the hunt.

Fortunately, it is my "thing" to do.

I am a HUNTER/shooter...lol

Definitely hunter. I shoot a lot, but I measure each shot against what would have happened. As in "dead turkey!" OR "laughing turkey"

Good one RC. haha. Met you down at Fort Stewart a few years ago at the place where you get your permits on the base and you were kind enough to come by our camp and give us a few helpful hints on Ft. Stewart.

Thanks

I shoot only because of hunting.  I really enjoy shooting but when I'm unable to hunt something, the bows will go too.

Both.  Back in the day, I won quite a few local tournaments.  Young fellas are catching up to me now.  I always considered tournament shooting just practice for hunting, however, and always used my hunting equipment.  Never had what I would call a target set up. Still enjoy shooting targets, but hunting is what I live for.

I shoot a lot, but bow season is why I shoot. Thousands of arrows per year for (hopefully) 2-3 shots at big game each season.

This year could be an extraordinary year with 8-10 shots at big game!

I'm not sure we should give one higher status than the other, as the opening post does by referring to "just" a shooter. It should be enough that we love the bow and try to shoot it well, whatever the target.

I spend many hours shooting because I really enjoy it, but it's all in preparation for that magic moment when you have to single out one particular hair and release the arrow.

I love to bow hunt, but I love to shoot too, keeps me in practice for the hunt, I am fortunate to live only 8 miles from our hunting land so I get to go during bow season almost every day. But when hunting season is over, I hate to put down the bow. So we do a number of 3D shoots over the summer.

I'm a back yard shooter and somewhat a hunter. But I sold my main deer rifle so I will be hunting with bow and arrow this year. Rifle hunting is to easy and I have developed a passion for hunting only with stick and string.

"In the end when I can no longer draw the bow or watch the arrow embark it's flight. When alas I possess only the spirit of the Hunter I will hunt, if only in my dreams, because the hunt is born amidst my soul and I...I am a Hunter."

Can't think of any better way to put it.

all word play aside...

I AM A HUNTER.
Every bow purchase, every thought of fletching shape, colors, stain on the arrow shaft, tip/head choice....

It ALL revolves around the question of " What might help me put more meat on the table?"

My name is John Kelley and I am a longbow hunter.

I am a hunter, but I try to shoot every day, and often a lot of arrows.  I love watching an arrow in flight, at a stump, a leaf, a target and mostly a game animal.  I practice to be the most efficient  hunter I can, but I get a thrill every time I release an arrow.

Like many people here I believe you should be able to shoot before you hunt.  That said I started killing almost as soon as I could shoot.  Different times.  If it moved and I could see it it got shot at.  I started when I was 7 or so.  Bugs, birds, bunnies, you name it.  Frogs were a favorite.  I got a lot more selective with my shots when I started hunting larger stuff.  Now I recommend that you be able to shot well before hunting.  I'm training my church youth group. In AZ the hunting part is much....... harder than the shooting part.

I'm a SHOOTER - I love archery and firearms and the challenge of putting the projectile, whether arrow or bullet where I intend it to go. That is the joy for me and a living target is not necessary to that end. Absolutely nothing against those who do hunt - I have hunted in the past and would again if I needed to feed my family. At present, though, I just like to watch 'em fly.

I do a LOT of both. I am a hunter at heart though.

If given the choice to hunt or shoot 3D (and I could only choose one) I would never shoot 3D again.

I live to bowhunt with my stick bows!

Honestly, I think there is a "Hunter Shooter", probably one of the best ones I know of is Sam Koger. Sam is absolute death one animals when he draws on them. If you don't believe it just get him to show you his kills scrapbook.

Thats the kind of shooter I want to be. The only way one becomes that kind of shooter is shooting at live animals. Targets may help some but its not the same in my opinion.

^^^^^^ This,

SO

Yes, ultimately I am a hunter, and that is what it is all about for me,

BUT

I'm still a shooter first & a hunter second, because I wouldn't hunt if I didn't think my shooting was good enough for it.
