Title: A South Cox Creation
Post by: FerretWYO on May 11, 2012, 11:39:00 PM
A few months ago Ryan S contacted me about getting in touch with South Cox of Stalker Recurves. After a long talk with South I could tell he was as real as they come and I had a new bow on order. Wednesday this showed up at my house. I have shot and handled hundreds of bows from bowyers around the world, I have seen none that surpass the craftsmanship of the work from South.

I met South at the Kalamazoo, MI show a few years back.  Great guy, great bows!

SHHHHH...don't tell no one, but if someone  wants one of these without a wait you can bid on one (right handed Miss Hope or left handed Miss Faith) in the ST JUDES AUCTION!

Beautiful.  I have been eying up one of his recurves for awhile.  Just got his new catalog in the mail yesterday.  Also just picked up a Scout with 2 sets of limbs.  Cant wait to get it.

That's a beautiful bow Randy, but how is your Pronghorn going to act after being neglected? Don't blame you for purchasing the Stalker though, 'cause it sure is gorgeous. Have fun with it and shoot well!

Ahhh the classic ebony and cocobolo. Beautiful bow Brother. His grips look like they are molds of your hand. I'd love to give one a go someday.

P.S. Randy, isn't the backstop behind the Glendale a little harsh on field tips???

South is as honest as they come.  I met him a few years before he started building bows; in fact I shared a 'honey-hole' with him on condition he not print its location in his stories.  He hunted there several times; killed some incredible game and kept his word to me.  He's always welcome in my home!

I have one of South's Tracker take down longbows. It looks very much like the bow Ferret is shooting except that it is a long bow. I am a recurve shooter and when I won the bow I was amused and thought that having a long bow on the wall would be nice and would add something to the recurve bows already there. However, when I got the bow I was amazed at how well I could shoot it. Very fast, very quiet, and accurate!!!! I'm pleased that I got it in a weight that I can shoot well. Somewhere down the road I will  have to get a pair of his static recurve limbs that are made to fit my riser.

First, Saying that you have not seen a bow that will surpass that craftsmanship is quite a statment. It says a lot about the integrity of the bowyer!!! I have never seen one of South's bows in person but I have studiously looked them over in the threads on here. A lot of this because they closely resemble my own tastes in what a bow should look like. I agree with you. It would be difficult to surpass the quality of work that he does. It is admirable and it is gorgeous to behold.
I believe that there are several bowyers that do this quality of work but honestly. Its as good as is humanly possible to get IMHO.
The bow design is top notch too. I see lots of nicely crafted bows with less than stellar design.

This bow is one that nearly has it all. I say that in that there is always room for improvement./ At least that is how I see life itself/ I would bet that South will somehow , someday be one of those guys that actually finds a way to do that./

God bless you all and congratulations on your fantastic bow. Steve

I just went back and noticed in the shot picture the arrow just leaving the bow and the forward curve of the string. Very interesting shot what the bow is doing on release. I would love to see a slow mo pic of the string and limb action at that point. I bet it would be something else to behold!!!!
This could give us an entirely differant meaning to string follow.

God bless you all,
Steve

TJ the backstop is a matter for concentration.   :biglaugh:

I have put a lot of arrows through it the last few days. It is every bit of bow as i could expect.

Beautiful bow and the one I sold was too and it shot really well that did hurt to sell it.

I'd love to get a Schuller built but then I'd have to strugle with how bad do I want a Sixby LB. I have 3 other builds coming Steve before I can send you anything first to start.

That string is really interesting shows me what what I thought is differant to about the relationship of string and arrow release's. I know it did with me anyways.

Beautiful bow they really are great bows and reasonably priced.

Beautiful bow!

Quite positive the string at release on my static tipped bow is demonstrating similar characteristics. Even a brace ht. out to 8.0", often yields light string touch approximately 3.0"s above my wrist.

Friend every bow has some string follow every BOW.

The more I shoot this bow I realize how stable it is.

FerrerWYO, Just believed that in may particular case, that ~3.0" of string travel was not the norm.

Stabilitiy degradation was not implied as being compromised. Actually am quite fond of this particular set-up.

how does it compare to your pronghorns?
Title: Re: A South Cox Creation
Post by: FerretWYO on May 25, 2012, 10:16:00 AM
Bayhunter it is tough to compare two bows which are on very different levels.

Both bows are very stable and very quiet. Speed is not no slouch on either side as well.

The grips are very different (though South will do all he can to acomodate your grip choice) the pronghorn has a slightly dished longbow grip and the stalker was ordered with a medium recurve grip. Both exellent and both shoot where you look but must be treated differently.

To compare two of the best custom bowyers in the world would be unfair. They are both amazing men and both talented artists providing top of line hunting partners to bowhunters everywhere.
