Title: Hog Hunting Question
Post by: ToxophilitePastor on May 10, 2012, 02:48:00 PM
I have never hog hunted before and I am getting ready to hunt on a friends farm that has a hog problem. Here's my question, how many of you hogs hunters carry firearms as back-up? I have read how aggressive hogs can be. Should I make sure there is a rifle present or just be careful?

I don't think it's needed but, I havn't ever been charged either.  If yall need some help thinning the pigs out I know a guy that isn't too far.  :goldtooth:

Good luck!

i never have.  i don't really worry unless i am up close and personal with a wounded one in a thicket. Then it wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, but i've never really considered it. Good luck to you!

I've killed LOTS of pigs- I have been charged by one wounded pig.  I followed up on a shot too quickly and paid the price for a poor hit and not enough patience.  If you are careful when following up your shots (especially marginal ones) I don't think a firearm is necessary.

here in Texas most of us carry a side arm any way but the one and only time I had one chase me I never gave any thought to my hand gun. I just ran like a girl  :goldtooth:

No need to carry-I have been charged once and there is simply not enough time to get a gun out anyway.

In several years of hog hunting I have never carried a gun or felt one was needed.

I carry mine. I have used it on a few occasions but have never had to use it for personal protection.

Like Bjorn said it will happen so fast you will not have time to get it out. Sows with pigs are the biggest issue. Make sure to give them room!

It's over rated. Pigs are basically harmless. I sometimes carry for protection from 2-legged critters, though.

I think you're good with just a bow

It's very unlikely that you would ever need it for pigs. People here ask me, "aren't you nervous going into the Everglades(with all of the snakes, panther, gators, etc)", my standard reply is that "No, I'm nervous driving back to Miami".

I don't think it's ever a bad idea to carry a sidearm in the outdoors(or city),though.

YOur more likely to be injured by the sidearm then the pig.

I've shot a bunch of them over the years and never felt nervous about them charging.

But I used to hunt bear with a bow too.  LOL

My 4" barrelled 1911 is always with me unless carrying it breaks some obscure law against self/family protection...even when squirrel hunting...and its not for the wounded squirrels..

I've only been charged once by a medium sized boar.  It was immediatlely after my friend had shot him on a stalk.  At that point there was no time to even pull a firearm (I was too busy diving into the bushes while urinating on myself:)).  Having said that, I carry one for a wounded boar I might be tracking but I will have it in hand because otherwise you won't have time to pull it.  My experience with the sows is typically a bluff charge to keep you away from the little ones.  I don't worry about it too much really but it makes me feel better on a trail of a big boar that I'm not sure how good the hit is.  Good luck.
