Title: tab trimming advice?
Post by: bowgy on May 10, 2012, 02:31:00 PM
I just started using a tab and really like it.  I can feel my anchor better get a clean release and have improved my accuracy.  I've noticed though that the bow which was really quiet with a glove is is loud now.  I'm thinking I might need to trim the tab near my ring finger but don't want to ruin it.  Does anyone have any advice on trimming the tab?  I read an article that said trim it to where the string leaves the leather but I don't know where that is.

I just starting cutting back a little at a time, and tried to keep the original contour as best as possible. I ended up cutting off quite a bit off of mine. You can tell where the string is contacting the tab and I just starting cutting back to there and still leaving enough for my fingers to still have a little contact.

Put baby powder on tab to see where string wears; then trim accordingly.

I agree. This is an old trick from many decades past.

More old time advice...don't jump to conclusions..take your time with this..you may ruin a perfectly good tab. Speaking from experience.

Do you mean trim the tab height?  As in top to bottom, instead of the length (left to right)?

Tall Paul,  I'm not really sure.   It does extend a bit below my ring finger as in up and down.

I may be confusing you instead of helping you.

So you're talking about near the END of your ring finger, not below?

See, bowgy, I'm wondering the same thing.  So I need the advice too!

Be careful about how much you take off. I followed the contour off the end of the tab once and got a bit carried away. Looked ok when trimming and was thinking about more of the hook aspect and how it fit my fingers. Ended up taking to much off and having the ends of my fingers taking a beating. Gave the tab away to some one with a smaller hand.

Put the tab on your finger and grab the string like your going to shoot.

Look and see how much tab is past your fingers, then trim a little(I use scissors).

Then grab the string again with the tab and see if you trimmed enough, if not then trim a little more. Remember  trim a LITTLE at a time.

You can trim until the tab is just a hair past your fingers or even with your fingers. This is when you grab the string.

I wear an XLarge glove but I buy a medium tab and I only have to trim a little. Hopes this helps.
