Ok, I have saved my pennies and am going to get my 1st long bow. I know I want 45@28. My questions are length and woods.
My draw is 31 inches so what length 64,66,68.
I want performance over looks so what materials would you guys suggest?

I'm biased but love the Mohawks. Slight r/d unseen when strung and flat hunting finish.
If your draw is 31 have it made 50 @ 31" so if you ever were to go to let's say Alaska on a moose hunt the DEC doesn't give you grief and one of the guys here from the classifieds said was a problem for him with buying my 49@28 even though he draws 29" . With a 31" draw I would go with a 68" bow or even a 70" length. The longer the bow, the smoother the draw. As far as materials I would take a look at bamboo or red elm. Both have attributes that enhance performance while still being fairly light in weight. I would also advise that you call a couple of bowyers and ask them these same questions and see what they say about things. Some I would reccommend are Vince@ Mohawk, Steve@ Abbott Bows, Allen @ liberty bows.
as a rule of thumb I agree with cbCrow, longer is generally smoother. That said, there are a number of bowyers making shorter R/D bows that draw very smooth and can accomodate your ridiculous draw :thumbsup:
I draw 29" on a 60" bow made by Ted Fry at Raptor Archery, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's silky smooth, has no hand shock, and doesn't stack a bit.
