My Illinois tags are kicking in. For those of you guys with experience, what do you recommend for turkey decoys this late in the spring?
I would stick with hen decoys. I have found the later the season gets the more toms shy away from jake or tom decoys. I would guess they have been fighting the last few months are sick of it.
I agree with Onestringer. Also I think the birds were a little ahead of schedule this time making it worse.
Hey Jon
If you are seeing several longbeards still together...i would....they love to pick on a unknown intruder
If you are seeing just a lone longbeard here and there...i would Not ...chances are he has been whipped and will avoid you.
If your seeing groups of Jakes....I would....they love coming in to investitgate a strutter.. i shoot more Jakes off a late season strutter than any
Let me say this about strutters....if your strutter looks real?? i would use it all season.. Gobblers keep strutting no matter what when a hot or potential breeding mate is near. Using a strutter only advertizes that "fake" situation...I use a DSD with real fan and butt feathers...it looks like a real turkey
i also use a Jake fan....Big Point here Jon if you digest anything i have sttaed so far.. Mount your Strutter LOW on the ground!!! do not have it High in the air TALLER than a real gobbler... push the stake in ground so Jake will appear smaller than real bird... this is huge and good luck
Thanks guys. Joey I bought a DSD so I'll probably give it a try. Called one in for a buddy a few days ago and he came right in to the half strut jake but he seemed a little hesitant. Guess I'll see what happens tomorrow and adjust as needed.
Jon I had 3 jakes try to kill my Avian deke this morning...it was nuts. The biggest one pulled a matrix on my arra. Poor deke has had his butt kicked by a gobbler already this year(put I took revenge for him) and now this. It is a half-strut deal and those hooligans seemed to want to whip him bad. Good luck bud and thanks for the rec on that ghillie from Mark Anthony...it is workin' well :)
