Looking for ideas for setting up a disc sander for tapering wood shafts. What are you using as guides? Any pictures of your set up? Any help/ideas on this will help greatly....

I like it,
Looks too complicated! :bigsmyl:
Got a Simplier way Bjorn? Not looking to buy a woodChuck....
Bout the same, simple but effective, lay out angles with a protractor, superglue some scraps on line with ends hanging over , grind ends to fit and glue a lil arra stop on the fence scrap.
I also made the end of the plywood to be flush with end of table to get the jig square with the table of sander.
Works great on tough arra shafts!

I realy like that Kenny, Looks like it controls the depth also.... You should make and sell them..
HA! Too many varieties of sanders to get a fit on em! Spose I could do a universal deal tho.......
I'm looking at a cheap disc sander from harbor freight
I've never used one of those guide things with a disk sander, but I'm gonna try it for sure. 3Rivers sells a wooden block with the angles set for about $12...
I'd rather buy one from Kenny, though, from what I've seen over on the bench he's top-notch!
the one from 3rivers has no stops.. I bought one awhile back and it was a feel thing.
If you have a table saw, can just put a sanding disc on it. Then make a couple of taper boards 5 degrees and 11 degrees with stop blocks on the end. Use the rip fence to position the taper boards to adjust the length of the taper. QED.
Thats a great set up,
great idea, new table saw just sitting there. just need to make the taper boards... :dunno:
DD,just remember....... it is a SAW BLADE and not a disk sander mandrel that the sanding disk is stuck to. It can be done but got to keep your safety hat on at all times there bud. I would mount the saw blade backwards where the teeth at least are turning backwards too. Please be careful !!! :scared:
They make a blade specifically for the table saw that does not have teeth. It is just a smooth disc. I got mine at Sears and it came with two different grits of self sticking paper. I have been using one for awhile and it works great.
could an old dull blade be taken to a machine shop, chucked in the lathe and the tooth section be just parted off. nice clean disk for sanding.
oops didnt see claytons post- sorry- no point in re-inventing the wheel - so to speak!!!

Or take an abrasive disc for cutting metal or masonary and glue the sanding disc to it. Better yet, cut a piece of plywood to shape and glue to that.
Thank you for all the great ideas.....
