Title: Who's the boss?
Post by: Keefer on April 25, 2012, 03:51:00 PM
O.k. guys I have a question and need good honest answers from ya...How many of you try and hide your traditional bows and any dealings from your better half besides me? I try not to let the wife know cause I'm a Tradaholic that likes anything to do with Recurves and longbows..I try to beat the wife home to except any packages delivered but today I had to confess and so far so good...My wife is really sick from a upper respatory snot bug of some sort and I think when the meds wear off I'm in deep you know what...I also have two little girls who will tell on me in a heartbeat saying"Daddy got a new bow today in a plastic pipe tube Mommy"          :scared:

What a wimp! Hide it from my wife, yeah right. My wife sees them all. She still is amazed that a bow as nice looking as a Widow or a Hill"only cost $100" LOL!!! Sure,I tell her I get them, never said I told the truth.  :D
Hello,my name's Nick and I'm a tradaholic.

22 yrs ago I told my to be wife my vices, hunting and bows. I buy and trade to my hearts content and she ,now my wife of 21 yrs, has yet to say anything negative.  :archer:

I neither tell nor hide. She knows I buy bows and sell some bows. Of course when you have a 2 bow racks with 15 longbows on one and 17 recurves on the other, what's another bow in the grand scheme of things

My wife knew I was a fisherman, hunter and bowhunter before we ever got married and that was 38 years ago. She's okay with my hobbies just like I'm okay with her hobbies.

I don't hide from my wife of 31 yrs. Rather than ask for permission I just beg forgiveness. Often times if you listen closely you can hear the 3 dogs and I howling at the moon from the doghouse  :saywhat:

I have archery stuff hidden, My wife has never seen the items and probably never will. And I use them often.I am so good I should run the Witness (I mean Archery ) protection program.

And having stuff shipped to work can save the rushing home.    :goldtooth:

Roger on that Frenchy, I live by the code that "a man has to have a good doghouse".

A few weeks ago we were at the camp and one of my kids looked at me and said "Dad, our camp is nicer than our house!"

My answer?  AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!

To my mind, that's a miserable way to live.

When my longbow showed up, which I bought thinking it better to beg forgiveness than ask permission, my wife gushed over it, said it was a work of art.

A couple of weeks later, when her Sea Eagle inflatable kayak showed up, I gushed all over it and proclaimed it a work of art.

Now I ain't saying I take a portion of my paycheck and hide a little for my "tradhabbit" yep that's a word in the Redneck backwoods boys dictionary cause I just sign my paycheck and let the wife put it where it's needed..What I meant was I feel quilty just swapping a bow and spending money from a swap/trade on shipping costs and when a new or used bow arrives trying to hide the items just so questions aren't asked as how I got the money for the shipping? I always sell a set of arrows, quivers, old bows, scrap what metal I gather just to do things like that...I surely don't take anything from our paychecks or money's from selling say a truck or anything like that...Like Stone Knife has said I'm up front about everything except little things where I might trade something that is mine with the wife...I wouldn't care if she sold a pair of her shoes to get another if that happened...Maybe that's what I meant to say  :dunno:

Me and my wife have an agreement on our personal spending. As long as the bills are paid and food is on the table, what we do with our own personal savings is up to us. If I ask how much was that (shoes) in her case, and the reply is $15.00, I know I shouldn't have asked. This has worked well for us for 25 years.

This is way to funny    I am sure I am really not fooling my wife.I am self employed and have been for 30 years.I take care of the money and paying bills here so its easy to buy and sell under the radar. But it was funny trying to explain the two BigJim bows,a box from Bison Gear and a box from Safari Tuff. All showed up same day on her day off.I told her I used my Christmas money all 500.00 of it.She knows....

I don't always hide my new bows, but guns are another matter. For some reason, she does not recognize a bow as one she has not seen before; however she spots new firearms instantly. One out of two ain't too bad.

However, I am contemplating a new HH Redman and am afraid to bring up the topic.

I've slowed down quite a bit since me and the Mrs. got together but it was all the buying, selling and trading that got her into it, she has an Assenheimer and '62 Wing, loves to shoot and after I took her Baltimore last year she wants to go to Cloverdale this year. Hide it? She encourages it.  :)

I'm honest with my wife. It just ends up easier that way. She knows I enjoy it and that's good enough for her. Before I buy anything we discuss it to make sure the budget allows it so there is no needing to explain this or that.

I even lucked out that she asked for her own bow this past Christmas so I took care of that in a hurry.

I guess every wife is different.........or are they???

No need to hide anything from the wife. She has three bows of her, plus other gear. She does not use them anymore being blind but still enjoys them and the memories they bring.

Neither of us hide financial dealings from one another. We barely have enough resources for one pot, let alone a His and a Hers.

After 33 1/2 years of marriage (uh-oh, is that me counting?) we have each other figured out.  When we were setting the date to get married back in 1978 I suggested July or after mid-November (we had not dated through a hunting season). She was curious, about the specific dates.  I told her either well before bow season or after the rut.  I was a forester at the time and soon to be a wildlife biologist so she knew I was weird from the get-go.

I have been known to play down an upcoming purchase as, "This old used bow" .

I've never tried it but Patrick McManus (retired writer for back page of Field and Stream or Outdoor LIfe) wrote an article I've never forgotten about buying new guns.  He takes them apart and brings a few pieces into the house every few days or weeks.  His wife apparently didn't have problems with "parts" as much as she did with new guns.  By the time all the parts were in the house he had his new gun!  I'd think this would work well on a TD?

I think this is how Radar O'Riley sent a Jeep home from south Korea?

I'm still single ish (lost track of how many serious girlfriends i've had), it not the bow buying that's hard to explain, its the out of state tags, mounts, month long hunts and trying to explain how I can't go to mexico because I used almost 2 months of vacation lol.

That being said the girl I'm dating now made it through a hunting season with a premier tag, so who knows.

My wife is way to street smart for that so i don't bother. But she knows not to say a thing since her pocket book and shoe collection rival my bow collection.

With a couple of her girlfriends she did kid around once about me going on a hunting trip but i told her and her friends that i would be going to Africa, Austraila and Alaska if not for those rocks on her fingers. They all laughed and then she said "Forget I mentioned it" and we both laughed.

Bows are not like guns. If I ever got a gun in the safe, I could pull it right back out in front of her and she never knew the difference. She can spot a new/different bow no matter what. Besides, when she gets home from work and the ups man follows her up the drive way, it don't much matter anyway. No sense in trying to hide something you can't hide...just gonna get caught.

I don't hide it, but I sure don't flaunt it either. I don't think I could afford for her to go 1 for 1 on purchases with me and I'm not about to encourage it.

She has shown an interest in traditional archery and the last package in the mail was a new recurve for her. I hope this is more than a fad for her.

I have a "hunting" account that I use for bows, supplies, or hunting trips. She knows about it and I take any job I can get on Saturdays to contribute to my "hunting" fund. The deal is no matter the pay check (Saturday paycheck) I take $20 out of it to put in my fund, the rest goes to the joint account. I still tell her if I'm thinking about buying something as little as a dozen nocks, I just want to be up front with her from the start.

I ask first.  Keeps me from having to remember anything.  If I bring something home without asking she knows that I would have asked first if time permitted.  Never have I heard, "NO".  I have heard, "how many bows, guns, etc can you shoot at one time?"
As far as the question. "Who's the Boss?"  I learned from my Dad, "I wear the pants in this house...but your mom irons them out every morning!"

I don't hide anything from my wife.  I'd rake ALL my hunting gear into a pile and burn it before I would let it damage my marriage.

But she and I know that we each like different things, and that we each have weaknesses for spending too much money on those different things.  We help each other NOT blow money on unnecessary things, but we often look the other way, too.  I'm the boss, the king, but she's the queen, and we share the kingdom.  She's the perfect help for me, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Archie,
Well put and even though I asked the question that's pretty much how I do everything but on occasion a pretty bow might pop up and if I can trade it I do and I don't go dipping out of our bank account to pay for something I don't need...I do swap or sell off some of my archery gear and take that money to buy the next trad. related thing if it be arrows, bow, or leather goods..

I've got a good woman, bless her heart. I work hard and I trade and swap toys alot, usually at very little real expense. I may kick in a $20 here and there in an upgrade but as long as all the bills are paid and there's a little something put away in the coffee can, she may roll her eyes but usually doesn't say a word about my hunting or my toys.

I had "the conversation" with her before we ever got married. I told her I don't chase women no more, don't hang out in bars, go to church pretty regular, and work my tail off on every opportunity. My vice? I hunt. That doesn't mean I hunt every once in awhile....that means if there's something to hunt or get ready to hunt or a foodplot to put in or practicing to hunt....anything "hunt"....that's probably what I'm doin'. And she's welcome to go anytime.

I think the words I ended that conversation with were, "The truck's got two doors, pick one! Heck, you can even drive! But the truck's leaving either way...."  :saywhat:

I don't hide anything , but nor do I ask. But then I don't spend that we can't afford and I spend my weeks working out of a motel room eating off of a George Foreman grill.
So spending a few bucks here and there is a non issue.
I do more trading these days on bows. Well other than than the one I'm waiting for LOL

I tried hiding it one time. I asked and was told no. I waited a couple months and ordered me a Air Arms S410 PCP. One day she was pulling out of the drive and as luck would have it, the UPS man pulled up before she left. Her: "What is that?" Me: "Oh nothing, he's just dropping off a thousand dollar air gun. Tell your mama I said hey." I think my down playing it helped. She got a chuckle out of my "kid caught with his hands in the cookie jar" look too. I believe the humor really reduced the severity of the repercussions.

Now a days I just tell her I'm fixin' to buy whatever. I think she is finally starting to realize that she shouldn't bother me about what I buy cause I pay my half of the bills, I'm never late and I keep her credit cards zeroed so she can buy herself whatever she wants. I haven't gotten too much hassle for the two bows I bought recently. Hell, she was actually excited for me when I bought a brand new TL, on a whim, cause my truck was in the shop. Then again she just told me she is thinking about selling her car which means I will probably be driving the truck again soon. Oh well, a month in the acura was nice. She can't take those memories away from me    :banghead:

Seriously though, I'm the man of this house (i.e. I buy what I want then I take my beatings like a man). Naw really, I wear the pants in my house. As soon as I'm done doing the laundry       .
