i go stumping often and i'm still looking for the holy grail of a stumping head! just started using regular filed points with Muzzy Grasshoppers which fly GREAT however at $12 for 3 i still tend to break them enough where it is not cost efficient. was wondering if you could use a washer of some sort like a grasshopper?? also use the small game head "the Hammer" which also works great but have broke (lost) one of them when my carbon hit a rock and looked like a claymore explosion! will brake down and by some 200 grain Ace hex heads next. i need a head of at least 200 grains to get good flight from my set up. any suggestions???
Traditional Bowhunter Magazine had a stumping head build in I believe the March edition. Worth checking out.
Dan
yup saw that, will try it in the future, i'm not to good at building things like that though!
I just use good old 125-grain Judo points or blunt field points. Both work very well for me. Right up until they hit rocks....
I guess that doesn't help you though. Could you take a .38 shell casing and add enough solder to bring it to the weight you need. I did have one buddy who placed .38 cases on the end of wooden arrows and punched 2 nails through at perpendicular angles. They were OK and they didn't bury. Hell on squirrels too.
Ace Hex, or even those cheap round steel blunts.
Love stump shooting, by the way. Did a bit this afternoon.
I have always used field points or old Zwickey deltas.
Rob
Ace hex head, hammerhead, red feather talon.
Judos mostly for me, I save moola because I rarely lose 'em. I also shoot the big rubber blunts in the rocks up in the mountains, they even worked on a big Dusky grouse with a head shot...I'm not sure what they weigh, but they're heavy.
SGT VPA's for me! love them
Been shooting Hex heads since they started making them. Can't beat em as fas as I'm concerned.
Ace hex heads. Great price and work well too.

The best I have used are the Judos.Get 75 gr Woody Weights to bring them up to the weight you need.
Rubber blunds ang judo on wood fir stafts , personaly it is the reason that all I shoot is wood.
I make my shafts simple ,a few coats of poly, flethes , nock and point.
I want to fling an arrow on any whim without being concerned about cost or labor.

VPA SGT/ The Hammer for me.
Cheap steel blunts
Hey Ken! Why not try a glue on Judo with a steel broadhead adapter inside... Works for me...
... mike ...
I've been using Saunders bludgeons for quite a while.
Ace Hex head blunts,VPA blunts.
Rubber blunts are the cheapest......slide it over your field pt so you get the weight you want......and stop shooting at rocks! :readit: You can then put them on and off so you can target shoot or stump.......I keep try'n to teach you :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
In thick grass, nothing beats Judo's. But most other times I use Hex Heads.
I have taken regular blunts and inserted them into a small chunk of plywood, drilled to fit snug, then drilled a concave spot across the entire face of the head (need to use a much larger drill, like 1/2"). Although not as good as a hex head, because the hex heads are sharper and wider, they are as cheap as you are gonna get and do a better job than straight blunts.
ChuckC
you won't need anything else after you shoot those Ace hex heads.
Ace Hex blunts, and the SGT's from VPA.
Another vote for Ace Hex heads.
I don't go stumping, I go roving instead and when I do, I use a standard field point.
Night Wing. What's the difference between stumping and roving? I honestly thought they were the same thing....
G5's work great.
Had great luck w/judos forever. Now I make my own per the "homemade judos" in the archives. These really work well for about 50 cents a head to any weight you want. PM for more.
Hex head on a footed carbon. :readit:
You will likely have to glue your nocks back on when you hit a rock. That's why I sent you extra.
Killdeer
will be ordering some 200 grain hex's this week. Killy your arrows will be chasing turkeys SOON!

When one goes stumping, they shoot at wooden stumps. That's fine for carbon or footed carbon arrows. I shoot thin walled 2212 aluminum arrows. Hit a hard stump with a 2212 and the 2212 will be history.
When I go roving, I shoot at large pine cones, large oak or sycamore leaves which lay on the ground. These targets don't destroy my arrows. I also shoot at anomalies I find on dirt banks.
I've never bent or split my aluminum 2212s when I go roving.
I really like judos. If I hit a rock and break an arrow; well, it happens.
If I miss, judos help me find that arrow in the grass or pine needles.
They are no more expensive than hex blunts.
If you need the extra weight, let me know, and I will modify the brass inserts for you.
Steel blunts (favorite) and rubber blunts. FYI, when I shoot aluminum I cut down a threaded field point into a very short steel blunt that I then put under one of those smaller 58 grain rubber blunts. This prevents the open end of the aluminum shaft from coming through the blunt after a while, extending the life of the blunt. Should work for carbon shafts as well.
Judos have always worked just fine for me. (nut)

Same here! Awesome heads!
I really like the hammerheads from 3 rivers
The Holy Grail of stumping heads IMO is the Zwickey Judo. Get the 125 gr. 5 degree taper ones for woodys and glue in a 75 gr. steel adaptor to get your 200 gr. min. Been shooting some individual Judos for years with hundreds of shots to their credit....still going!
Kris
Thanks for teaching me something new Night Wing.
Judo's man judo's!! best stumpin head I've found... tuffer'n nails too!
Jason
I mushroomed another GT shaft just this morning. That's three in less than two weeks smacking into not quite rotten wood. The Hex heads are angled and act as a wedge on hard hits. That's the only flaw in them. They are by far the best grouse head I've used. Today I was looking for soft rubber blunts and I think I found them in Bearpaw slip ons mated to a light field point to give me my 175 gr.
I have collars made but would rather keep a standard shaft for both stumping and hunting and target.
I don't know how you guys are getting away with putting a rubber blunt over a field point. I tried that once and had points pushing through the blunt in only a few shots.
For general roving I use Judo's. For shooting actual stumps I use regular steel blunts or .38 casings with a #4 split shot sinker mashed into it, weighs 125gr.
