Title: What to do with some deer midsections ?
Post by: Flinttim on April 21, 2012, 10:39:00 PM
The fine fellers at the ITBA gave my grandson 4 deer midsection that they were replacing. Still plenty of shooting left in them for a 10 year old. Trying to get some ideas on how to join the 2 pairs to create two "headless" deer for him. The joints are the same so they can't be slipped together. I'm sure some of you have done it and can lend some insight. Cut the dovetails off both pieces and glue together some how or maybe try to cut a dovetail groove on one and then slip together and glue ? Need some help here, the boy is getting antsy about shooting them.

Cut the dovetail off one then cut a dovetail ( female) cut into it with a wood saw. Use the cut off dovetail as a pattern if you want. If it needs tightening up  use some great stuff spray insulation. And have at it.    :archer2:    :archer2:

If that doesn't do just cut off the dovetails on both put a hole in both ends for an end of a broom handle or stick about 6" and great stuff them together.

I would think that maybe some of the polyurathane glues would glue them better than foam insulation.

Maybe, but the target will soak a lot of it up so I've also used a tube of wall board glue (with a calking gun)for gluing  paneling to Sheetrock.

Cut off the D tails, cut an arrow into 6" pieces(4) drill a hole a little bigger than the arrow diameter on the four corners of both block and use liquid nails on the arrow pieces(acts like pins) to join the blocks together.

Liquid nails , that's the name of the stuff. Was sitting there trying to think of the name but could only describe paneling Sheetrock. Thanks guys

If you have the wooded space just set a couple up so there is a tree and brush hiding all but the mid section to make a realistic hunting shot.

I've repaired some targets with the liquid nails and broken arrow shafts.

I would butt them up with the dove tails touching. Plastic wrap them and fill the void with foam.

I like hanging the left over torsos from tree limbs.
