If you hunt behind your dog with a BOW (bowhunting only), what are some of your stories?
Libby does great on quail, but as a small Britt she has a hard time retrieving pheasant. She usually traps them when they are down and waits for me to come help her.
Here is a pic of our hunt in Jan. herndondt had downed a bird but it ran off unable to fly. We lost it. As we were leaving Libby went back into the woods and wouldn't come back when called. I knew something was up. She had the downed rooster cornered and was waiting for help. As I neared her the bird escaped her hold (She usually traps them with one paw). It jumped up on a pine log and I drew back the HH Big five and loosed an arrow towards its head. I scored a direct hit. We ended up with three birds of four flushed. One escaped unscathed.

Awesome pic...and I love that story!
Suzie is about a year old now and is great little bird hunter. I plan on bringing the bow on some of our hunts this year.

Awesome pics!
You gotta love a bird dog!
My Gullivor (Gully) has become a little pissed off about not being hunted and has decided to love the birds instead. He's taken an interest in the 6 chicks we got 2 months ago and now would rather lay in their pen then anthing else. They follow him around like momma. He actually licks them and herd them around the yard! I hope he straightens back up..LOL.
The dog absolutely lives to blood trail! Have never hunted birds over him...although TJ and I worked him as a pup on birds and pop traps. He's "whoa" broke and will retrieve....we just both kinda gave up for lack of wild birds in our area...Good thing about the GSP is that they are so versitile that his blood tracking ability keeps me working w/ him and enjoying him in the field. When you put a lead on him he becomes "all business"! Best dog I've ever owned....by far...and there have been a bunch.

that is a cool picture. My wife says it is sooooo cute!!!
Lowebow thats awsome, my Labs (chocolate and yellow) dont hunt only because I dont bird hunt but the do love to stump shoot and will find my arrows. The only thing I can figure is they can smell my hands on the shaft. Best freinds there ever were IMHO.
There's an awful lot to be said for the "versatile dog". I spent many years in Germany and, while they have their specialized tracking dogs, all hunting dogs are trained to (and expected to) point, track, retrieve from land and water.
The standard argument is that they don't do any one thing as well as a "specialist" breed. True to an extent. On the other hand, every forester I knew had only one dog and that dog lived in the field with him day in and day out. They were a good team no matter what was required of the dog.
Team work is what it's all about and that comes from constant association.
Great pic! I have 2 Britts and looking to get a HH also

Gully does the same thing! He has pulled the fletching off of more than one arrow that was buried in the grass digging them up. It's cool to watch, but you gotta get em from him quick or that's what happens.
Love Britts. Do ya'll hunt pheasants with broadheads? If so how do you keep the dog from getting cut on a retrieve?
Don't forget to go chase them bunnies with that "bird dog". As Bladepeek said above they can do other things than hunt birds.
I still use the gun behind my Drahthaar for grouse but I also use him for rabbits with the bow. And he has found a bow killed deer for me also.
nice pics guys - bowhunting for birds; good remedy for a dog or hunter that is g** shy :D
Wish I could have been with you Bud.
Cool thread Bud.
Here is a pic of my "Pup" Grizzly. He was a flusher for about the 1st hour then he would turn into a pointer when he was to tired to run all over the place anymore. I got the best of both worlds when hunting over top of him. Notice the birds on top of the Trailblazer.
Now he is an "Old Man", and im sitting here waiting for a surgery next Monday. Wonder who the "Old Man" really is?

Very nice!
Here is another pic of Grizz and I on a VERY fridgid morning. If memory serves me correct, I got 4 over him that day. It was WAY to cold for pics after that hunt. We just wanted to get in the truck and get home.

Here's a picture of our Springer, Penny. She is a constant companion on all of our stumping outings, pretty good bird hunter as well.

Mike,
Libby just had surgery Monday. Thought I was going to lose my hunting partner. It was scary. She is recovering well in the house. The things dogs won't do to get indoors...sheesh!!
Nice dogs everyone. Love hunting with a good four legged partner. :) Bowhunting makes it even better
I've got a ways to go here on training. Meet "Gracie" 6 months.

Great thread... I've got a springer and she's great with birds, ducks, geese and bunnies. But I've only gun hunted with her.
My worry is that my dog will always retreive birds but, here our law says we need to use broadheads on waterfowl, and I'm afraid she'll get cut. Any advice or experiences on this? I'd love to bowhunt for birds with my dog...
It would be a real thrill.
Nice dogs...I'm a sucker for springers. So much hunt in them....
Cool post! I thought I was the only one that wanted to hunt birds with a bow and a dog. I have a beagle now, not a hunter, but have a couple of pointing yellow labs coming soon that I plan on bird hunting with.
Looking forward to the fun!
This is Lucy, she'll find em and fetch every time I do my part. She'll also point rabbits, bust up a flock of Turkeys & blood trail deer.
On a side note, a friend of a friend is moving and looking for a home for their setter. She hunts but I'm not sure what level she is. Picture and a little write up on "Dottie" is on my website under "Pup Rescue" Look at the button marked SPBC if you haven't tossed your cookies since last visit. She'll be free to a good home.

Amazing all the German Shorthair Pointers showing up. Mine is 7 years old and the best dog I've owned! Unfortunately where I live in PA doesn't offer many upland bird opportunities but I still spent two years training and preparing him if things turned around. Here's a few photos.....Boy I wish we had a strong (or any) bird population to hunt him over. For years we bowhunted a preserve every year for pheasants, I just lost my interest over time and the high cost per bird those places charge.
I had two Springers over the years. Another great breed. I always had a thing for the black and white ones! Just good looking dogs! Mine looked just like yours Kirk. Her name was Smudge!
Here's Cody, a rare mostly liver GSP!

Slim from above,
Do not use broadheads for waterfowl or any other game for dog retrieves. I don't even use field points. "Lucy" returns at about 25 mi/hr, it wouldn't take much for the nock end of the arrow to hit dirt at that speed, putting the pointy end through the dog.
This is Sarah. We rescued each other a few years ago. Her owners were moving and I needed a setter. She loves elk hunting in eastern Oregon. Grouse and squirrels abound and she thinks its her duty to keep them away from camp while I'm hunting.

Tim, the way I look at the cost of preserve hunts is this. Last year I spent 1200 on a lousy out of state 3 day deer hunt (travel and hotel in that cost) That same money could by me a dozen preserve hunts a bunch more fun, excitement and exercize for me and my dog. I shoul have story coming out in a future TBM about preserve hunting pheas.

BTW, that photo is from a previous TBM story.
My two faithfull companions. This was after a hunt in Iowa that I was lucky enough to take with a longbow. I have used both to recover Turkey after Knee surgery.

Great Thread!
7 Lakes,
Where I live, we have to use broadheads on waterfowl. That's the law.
Here's SHANTI our french spaniel who just got 2 and still in training (http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff380/ti-guy/020-1.jpg)
Great post and pictures! As the proud companion of a small, 26# of pure hunt, Brittany these pictures brought a smile to my face. My little Brit loves to point quail, bunnies, and of course lizards. Great looking dogs, bow, and some nice birds in there too.
Libby is roughly 26# too. After her surgery she's about 24# now. She'll bounce back well though.
Keep those bowhunt'n dogs pics and stories coming guys and gals... I love hunting with a bow and a Britt.
