I'm thinking about ordering 175 grain VPA (3-blade) broadheads after reading some information here. I will be mounting these on Beman MFX Classic 500 Spine shafts (with 50 grain HIT brass inserts). Is the diameter of the base of this broadhead larger than than the 9/32nd MFX shaft? Will I need to use some type of adaptor collar?
Is there such a thing as a 175 grain field point to simulate this broadhead that I can use on the same shaft?
Thanks
The base of the broadhead is larger, I use the collars that Three Rivers sales, make sure you order the correct size, the wood grain coating makes them larger, I have also footed some shafts with a 2" piece of alumimum shaft.
You will be pleased with the broadhead.
My suggestion would be to foot youre MFX with a piece of alum shaft.
That way you will have a standard 5/16" diameter wich fits for BHs and for standard field points.
also those shafts will gain alot of durability and it wont cost you a fortune.
Actually if you are using the screw ins you won't need the collar. Mine fit without them. If you are using glue ons with inserts you will want the collar.
D.P.
There definitely are 175gr field points. You can get them from 3 rivers or kustom king
If using screw ins I wouldn't worry about the different diameters.
You can find 175 gr fieldtips for cheap online with some of the sponsors here.
Footing with aluminum will make the diameters match. It will also make a bomb proof arrow. Trust me....i miss a lot. I shoot the MFX 500 as well and putting 1.5" of 2018 on the front end and 0.25" on the nock end make for a tough arrow
People on this site always come through!
Thanks for the quick responses folks! I'm going to use the screw-in version so I'll not worry about it.
I've never paid much attention to the footed shaft threads because I didn't see a need for me because I'm not hard on arrows. I've only broken two MFX shafts in the past 2.5 years although I have skinned the finish off a lot of them hitting arrows with arrows.
My shafts are cut pretty close to my draw length (26" draw and 27-27.5" shafts depending upon the bow). I'll do some research here and find out how you fellows put them in place. I assume glue the sections in place?
Here are a few MFX 500s footed with aluminum. I thought it was 2018, but now my brain is telling me it might be 2020. I'll have to double check when I get home.
Anyway, just cut to length using a cheap pipe cutter. File away any burrs, and glue in place so that the edge of the aluminum is flush with the edge of the carbon. I used Gorilla Glue.
If you try it, do it with only one or two arrows at first to make sure the arrows are still shooting correctly. For me, it didn't make a difference so i did about 18 arrows.

I use the brass insert with the 5 degree taper glued into the arrow, then use glue on head.
That Legacy shaft footing blends right in with the MFX finish nicely!
I just placed an order with BigJim for 3 of the VPA screw-in 175 grain broadheads. I also ordered a dozen of the collars to better fit the MFX 500 to the broadhead. I'm going to also look into the aluminum shaft footing and compare the two methods of improving the fit. I realize the alum. shafting will also beef up the arrow end.
Thanks!
