Hey all, I'm new to the forum so apologies in advance if this post is in the wrong place. I'm looking for a review of mahaskas recurve and one of big Jim's thunder child reflex deflex bows. Im looking to get a new custom bow and I'm torn between these two, if anyone has shot either of these please give me some advice. Im new to recurves and reflex deflex bows as i have only shot longbow so I don't know what would be an easier transition. I'm just looking for a good shooting dependable bow for a good price. Any advice from you experts is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Do a serch on here and you will find alot of info on big jims bows. Also check out the classifieds.
There is no better advice than to shoot each yourself.
One archer's dream bow may be a nightmare for another.
1st determine which one is a fit and if both happen to be a match then choose what you perfer.
welcome to trad gang and trad bowhunting.
the first link in my sig line may be of assistance.
As others have said, You will find a lot of info through the search feature.
I am sure they are both fine bows, but I am a Longbow guy. so I would lean to the Big Jim; However that is just one man's opinion.
Good luck on your bow search!!!
dont make a decision before you hold a bow and if possible shot it, to see what you like. I am by no means an expert, but dont make the same costly errors that I have!!!
I had a Mahaska long bow and it was a very well behaved bow. I don't think Kent Ostram makes a FF compatible bow, though. That might or might not be an issue with you. I'd be willing to bet the Big Jim TC would be way faster for the same draw weight.
Ron
bladepeek, what exactly do you mean by FF compatible??
Also, holding one and shooting one is next to impossible as they're both out of state bowyers and I don't know anyone in northern colorado who has one. So making the decision without this information is almost impossible. I have shot other recurves and liked them, i've yet to shoot a relfex deflex bow but i'm thinking I might and then make my decision based on that. Generaly speaking, which is faster? reflex deflex or recurve?
FF = Fast Flight string compatible.
If you are anywhere near Denver, go to Rocky Mountain Specialty Gear and shoot some bows. They have a ton of bows you can shoot and lots of great advice.
I am not very familiar with Mahaskas, but I have heard nothing but good things about both bows. I know Big Jim post on here quite a bit and is as nice of a guy as you can hope to meet.
I would imagine that Mahaska has the same or similar guarantee as do most boyers. If for whatever reason, you receive your bow and you are not happy with something, we offer free adjustment, replacement, or refund. (does not include shipping)

St.Joe River bows!!!
Sorry guys, I decided to guy with the ambush recurve from two tracks, I ordered it a week or two ago, 60# @ 28. Osage limb cores and honduran rosewood riser. Chuck seemed like a great guy on the phone and I cannot wait to get my hands on that sweet little bow!!!
Good choice. How could you go wrong? Big Jim has quite a following & performance weapon art to match his stellar guarantee. Don't know mahaska recurves but nearly bought their lb's a few times. Likewise, Chuck makes quality stuff & can stretch his recurves to unbleieveable pulls. Easy on the eyes too! *Get a 2nd job for awhile & order one of each!
Shot several of Big Jim's bows, and they are very nice. Might want to take a peak at Lost Creek bows. Pretty good deal on those right now.
