Can some one tell how to make a string by string length rather than AMO? Let's say you want a string 55"
Did you check the videos on 3R website under the Archers Den Videos.
Assuming a Flemish string...
If you're using a jig to measure the strands make sure the jig makes strings to actual string length, not AMO length. If they do, then just set the adjustable peg at 55" and have at it.
If no jig, I cut strands 16" longer than the desired finish length and then use 8" on each end to start twisting for eyes.
55" + 8" + 8" = 71" for cut length.

I need the jig that makes the string for actual sting length. I have a AMO jig.
If that is the case then you simply need to make or buy a jig that goes by that standard.
That's not meant to be flippant but the answer isn't very complicated.
If you mean you want to use the present jig but figure out how to use it to make a string by string length and not AMO length, just make a string, measure it, and remark that peg setting. Do that with a couple settings and you should see a pattern.

Well I would think that you could make two strings at consecutive amo settings and measure them for actual string length. Then you can calculate out the rest of the center pegs and convert them. If you want string lengths between existing pegs, just drill a new hole between them.

There's detailed instructions for a string board that goes by string length in "Doin' the Twist" and "How to Build a Great Bowstring", but you can also go with the advice given and re-mark the board you have.
Do a little measureing. For instance, wind off a strand on a given peg--say 60" AMO on your board (should make a 57" string). Figure out how much you use for your loops (usually around 8"). Double that, and subtract from the length of the strand--that should be the length of string that peg will make. The pegs should be marked in 1" increments--re-mark accordingly, AFTER making a string to verify you have the first peg re-marked correctly.
Never understood why jigs were marked by bow length...string length can vary a bunch depending on the bow. One 60" bow might get a 54" string, anothter 56", another 57", another 58"...lots easier to mark it by string length.

I started building strings after I bought Chad's "Doin' the Twist DVD". I used the drawings from the video and made a string board out of oak with brass pins. The markings are string length like Chad says and are stenciled under four coats of Polyurethane. I tend to overbuild.
I would encourage you to make a jig that is for string length measurements.

Thank you for the good words Chad and Josh. Forgot to mention that I put some screw on rubber feet under it so that it reduces movement on my bench.

You and I think alike cause that looks just like a string jig I have that I made about 8 years ago...I too used the stamps to mark the string lengths and numbers of strands...I used a 3/4" or 1" dowel to put my spool on as I pull material to go over my pegs..The only other thing I did different was I bought a self adhesive tape material that had the measuements like a rule and adhered that to the side so I could measure where to hold my string lays to start my twists...I over did it as well but it gets used quite a bit and well worth it....Thanks for posting your board...God Bless, Keefer's <><
You don't even need a board. Just take the length of the string you want to end up with, add 16" to that measurement, and drive two nails at that distance into a wall or your workbench, and have at it. Don't overthink this, it works every time.
You need the strands to be different lenghts if you are going to properly do the loops on a flemish or a least that is how I've done it. My string jig has an adjustable pole with markings on it.

Great idea about the self stick measuring tape :thumbsup: I will have to do that to mine too since you planted the idea. For now, I have marked my bench with length marks or use a tape measure depending upon where I am.

very true about nail idea but my walls have no space where my work bench is located so I built the jig. Someday, I hope to have another proper shop to work in.
