Title: Brackenbury opinion
Post by: bowhunterportugal on April 04, 2012, 08:12:00 PM
Hi gang.

I'm about to buy a Brack Legend, 66" 55@28 original, made by Jim himself.

What can you tell me about this bow?
I'm new at trad archery so all opinions and teachings will help.

Thanks for looking and all the help

I have  a bow made by Jim

62 inch bow

Jim made a great bow for then and now

What's your draw ?

Don't use fast flight strings on it

If it was made by Jim, it's a sort after bow and very smooth and fast, you will be happy with it.

Bracks are fine bows.

66" is longer than I prefer for a hunting bow, but should offer a very smooth draw and be very forgiving.  60-62" draw will accomodate a 28 inch draw.  Long bows accomodate longer draw lengths with out stacking (a rapid increase in draw weight through the draw).  But again, longer bows will offer a shorter draw length shooter a very smooth draw.

It will be great for target shooting or 3D shooting.  Just a little long (in my opinion) for hunting in tight quarters or from trees with many limbs around to get hung up on.

Another point, you should have no problem selling it if you decide on another bow later.

If you like her, and it feels good shooting her, you will be purchasing a quality bow.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have a 3pcs made by Jim. Its my go to bow, very smooth, good speed, just a nice bow. I've owned others BW, Bob Lee, etc... and there nice bows, but I always go back to my Brack.

Sorry guy's, the bow is 61#@30".

I draw 28, maybe a little more. I'm 6'2".

I'll do 3D shooting, small game hunting and big game almost always ground hunting.

No Fast flight, Dacron B50 only, but, how many strands should I use? I must ask a guy here to make me some, so the strand number is important. Online I found a equation to get this number. Bow peack weight x 4 and divide for the strain breaking weight.

ex:
(40lbs x 4)/10lbs = 16 strands. If your peak bow weight is 40lbs and your string has breaking strain of 10lbs (i.e.. your string breaks if you put a force of 10lbs on it), your recommended number of strand is 16

Another question is, arrow weight. What are your opinions?

I'm thinking minimum of 8 grains per pound.

Diogo, it has a 16 strand B50 string I made for it and I shoot 2117& 2020 aluminum,  and 5575 gold tips. It also shoots 60-65# POC .  I like to stay at 9.5 to 10 gp for arrow weight.

Stan, thanks. 5575 is the range of poundage of the arrow, right? Do you cut them or let them full length? I believe 5575 is also a 400 spine, at least on the heavy hunter arrow from gold tip.

I have them 29.5 from nock valley to bop. 120 wts with 175 gn heads plus another 20 or so gn for feathers ,nock etc.  puts them around 580 or so. It seems to shoot the legacy 2117's the best but will shoot most anything within spec's well.
I have not bare shafted, just fletch em and shoot em.

They are great bows.
I had one that Jim made back in the 80's.
I know have one that Bill Howland built for me and it is also a great bow.
The Brackenbury line is well known for being quality bows.

I'm sorry, what does it mean 120 wts?

I began my Traditional Journey with a 66" Brackenbury and wish every day I could get that bow back . Great shooters and not hard to look at. If the bow doesn't work for you let me know!

Linda is still advertising her strings.  I got some from her about a year ago.  Exceptional strings!
