Just picked up a nice used Big Horn with two sets of limbs off the classified forum here and would like to know if any of you Big Horn experts can tell me who the bowyer was and when it was made?

The bow is 60" and draws around 64lbs @ my draw length and really shoots extremly well. The bow is very quiet and hits hard. The serial # on the limb is 04272.

I bought it in '92, just after G. Fred sold the company to the King of the Mountain people.
Thats a King of the MTN era grand slam recurve.If I remember correctly John Martin was one of kings boyers. I have two that I had made and the serial #'s are a little higher and lower than yours.They were made in the mid 90's.

Yes that is a KOM era Bighorn the best shooting Bighorn made,maybe not the most collectible but a good couple of streps ahead of the previous 2 models.I own all the model made and yours are the more stable and fast ever made!I was trying to buy a couple of those limbs but the seller wanted to sell the whole package.Take care of your new jewel!
Stupid question here, but later on did they restart the serial numbers, cause my bighorn has a much lower serial number but I am pretty sure its a newer bow....
Thanks guys. The first custom bow I ever shot was an Asbell Big Horn back in the late eighties and I told myself someday I would get one. Just didn't know it would be 30 years later and made by a different bowyer.
I am very impressed with how it shoots, the bow is super quiet even three under and really flings a heavy carbon with authority. The bow is smooth, fast and forgiving. I have owned and shot Blactails, Fedoras, Wapiti's, and a Rose Oak and I must say I would rate this right there at the top as far as how it shoots for me. Maybe doesn't have all the fancy and exotic woods of some of my others but it just flat out shoots right where you are looking.
Is there a way to tell if the bow is FF compatiable. I have two strings that came with it and one is labeled NITRO Rec. 12. I am guessing that means a 12 strand string made out of NITRO material. All I have ever used was B50 so I am not sure what nitro is.
Beautiful bow woodslinger! I have one I picked up in a trade. It is a 15th Anniversary, with G Fred's signature on it. Was Asbell building bows, or did he just own the company?

Keith,you have some of the best Bighorns ever made!
The Nitro string was build of some blend of high performance string and Dacron,I still have mine;faster than a Dacron string but not so aggressive like ff.
The strands are also much thicker than Dacron and FF.
Woodslinger If the limb tips have the bomb proof tips that are reenforced you can use fast flight strings.That being said I destroyed 2 sets of limbs that were reenforced using D-97.
Stick with the B-50 and she will still shoot with authority and you won't have to worry about the limbs.It is my personal opinion that the performance gains of FF are a bit over rated.

I appreciate the offer and I promise you will have first crack at it if I decide to sell. The bow came with two of the Nitro strings and I will probably stick with them until I need to replace them.

I saw that setup in the classifieds a little to late. It looks like a very nice bow. Those era Bighorns are smooth, fast, and quiet. You scored an awesome deal on it also.
I would do the same thing and shoot the strings that came with it.
