Post by: bkbk12 on March 21, 2012, 12:06:00 PM
Our turkey season is coming up quick and I have never hunted turkey with traditional equipment before and was wondering what you think would be the better head for me to Use I have Simmons Tiger Sharks Abowyer Brown Bears and VPA Terminators Also where is your preferred aiming spot I have heard several guys say right up from the leg bone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There have been several threads talking about broadheads for turkeys on here. Just do a search.

Just about any broadhead that works for deer will be fine for a turkey.  I'm too lazy to change broadheads and re-tune, so I just stay with my Woodsmen Elites for deer and turkey.

Look to the top of the pow wow forum and you'll see a thread titled "animal shot placement". Click there and then scroll down through the posts till you get to the turkey pics. Everything you want to know about turkeys placement is right there.

As for broadheads, yes there's other posts here you can search for. Most use there deer hunting setup, which is fine.  I like 3 blade heads personally.

I like the big Snuffers on turkeys. This picture shows what one will do to the wingbone of a turkey. After the shot the tom flopped a couple times and died within feet of where I shot him.

That being said, any sharp broadhead put in the right place will kill them.

The thread on shot placement is worth checking out. Guru has posted a lot of good info about turkey hunting. A lot of guys seem to recommend the big snuffers for a turkey BH. I'm going to try VPA terminators (soon hopefully)

Three blades are generally recommended with a wide cutting diameter to increase your chance of hitting the small vitals area.

Good luck!

Have always shot snuffers with the springy thats attached to a judo point. Hit them in the wing butts so they can't fly. Works well for me

Have witnessed a couple fly off with arrows.

Personally utilze the the largest cutting BH possible with a well designed arrow. Prefer the resistance encountered to BH penetration to be solely up to the gob.

Quickened immobility is key.

Hit them high.

I shot my State Record bird with a G5 and it flew about 80 yards across a field and my partner running behind it and when it decided it was low on blood and fuel it came down with legs tucked and spurs out and wow they do damage, my partner got both spurs in the palms of his hands, this year i will be using a large Snuffer and maybe they will stay put, i had wheels when i shot that one but this year it will be a stick and string

Big broad heads seem to be the recommended medicine for turkeys

I've used snuffers, old Bear Razorheads, and Magnus 1 4 blades on my turkeys... fastest one to die was the one shot with the Bear head... but was also the best shot ;-)

Shot placement is of primary importance, but a big head does allow for a little more leeway...
