Brotherhood, fatherhood, family, friendship...and a special little boy growing up right before our eyes!

So much to share, but I'll need to get some pix ready and get caught up a bit.
This is going to be very good.
Can't wait to see Andreas more.........
Bisch
I've been waiting.....
Randy maybe this thread, when you see how much fun we had in 3 short days, will make you decide to make the trip to Alabama to visit and get in on some of this....we hope so! Stay tuned...we packed a lot of fun into 3 days
:campfire: :archer:
I can't wait to see this one. :goldtooth:
:campfire:
Looking forward to this
Some history first...
2010...
As some of you might remember, I got Cade started bowfishing in June 2010. Even though I wasn't sure if he could pull enough to get an arrow in a fish far enough, there just wasn't anymore holding him back...it was time!
So we went out that first time with our friends Timmy and Gary K., and Glenbo, he hit the very first fish he ever shot at, even got it on video....but my fears became reality...the barb didn't hold! But what a way to start, I know guys that shoot shot, after shot, after shot that just can't seem to get the hold of shooting into the water.
Then in July 2010, our friend Terry Receveur(indianabowman) called to invite Cade and myself to go bowfishing with him and his son Tyler on his friends boat...the Carp-ageddon!
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=090410#000000
As you can see by the link, he again did very well shooting, but just wasn't getting enough "umpf" behind his arrows to get enough penetration...
We went a few more time locally and Terry was gracious enough to take us two times on on his personal boat...the result was always the same, hit fish, but none landed.
Every time we went out with Timmy, Gary, and Glen...the mission was always to help Cade get his first carp. Everyone unselfishly gave up opportunities to let Cade have a go at the fish.
We even worked on a bunch of special points that might help with penetration...but by the end of the summer, even though he'd hit a bunch of fish, he never did land one.
2011....
So with the new year 2011,Cade a little bigger and stronger...we thought for sure when we planned a trip to Alabama with Don and Sky, it would happen there.
Don even made the effort to make Cade a special arrow that he thought might help with his situation. It was an absolutely amazing trip, and again, Cade was consistantly hitting fish, but just couldn't keep those big, amazingly strong buffalo on.
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=102102;p=1
Then on our first trip around home here with Timmy and Gary, Cade again hit the very first fish he shot at, but not solidly enough to hold it!
Then in July 2011, it finally happened!
WOW!!Cade sure is getting big!
Bill
http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=105637#000000
He'd finally landed a fish!! Truthfully though, he couldn't have hit it in a better place for the barbs to hold.
On that trip he hit more, and the rest of the summer he hit several more...but still not quite "long" and "strong" enough to get the barbs in on what should have been well hit fish...
2012....
So now that brings us up to 2012 and this past weekend, our trip down to Alabama to again spend 3 days bowfishing and hangin' out with our good friends(more like family) Don, Sky, Tammy, and little Chloe Beth Wilson.
Leading up to the trip, and even on the drive down we talked about if Cade just landed one fish it would be great.
I mean, even if he didn't the trip would be a "success", but we all really wanted this for Cade!
What you are about to read about, and see in pictures, is something way above and beyond what any of us could have imagined....stay tuned!!!
:campfire:
God bless,Mudd :archer:
It is nice to see Cade growing through these years,a future generation to keep the traditional values alive. Now for his first fish tomorrow his first deer.... :notworthy:
being a lefty myself I hope to sell him my bows when I'll not be able to draw them anymore!LOL :biglaugh:
Once again, to share our trip, was my dad. He was coming down to relax and get some much needed time on the links.
We had a great ride down except for a little traffic in Chattanooga. Before we knew it we were pulling in the driveway!
After greetings and a great BBQ dinner, we got our gear out, quickly organized and were heading to the water.
We hit the water just as it was getting good for visibility with the lights.
It would just be us 4 lefties on this night...
Which lake/river are you guys on?
:campfire:
Lake Guntersville,,,,Scottsboro and Stevenson area
:campfire:
We've watched the Bowhush girls grow up into beautiful young ladies and now we're watching Cade grow up into a fine looking young bow hunter. Cool stuff for sure. Time is a flying.
The kids posts here are definately highlights. :clapper:
We were in the water for about five minutes....
Now I can't remember if Don saw the fish and pointed it out to Cade, or Cade saw it himself....but next thing I see Cade drawing down on something....I look into the water just in time to see Cade's arrow perfectly skewer a gar!
I saw his arrow go at least half way through it!
The very first fish we saw!
I knew there was no need to help him...this fish wasn't getting off!
I bet in the previous 2 times I've been down to Alabama with Don and Sky I've shot at close to 15 gar and never hit one...he'd gotten one before me!
I couldn't believe it, his first shot and he'd already shot and landed a fish...I/we were blown away!
I know we saw a couple more fish, and we probably missed a couple....then we found the buffalo!
Cade draws and shoots at a very big fish, drills it, and the fight was on!
I knew he'd need a little help fighting this one! he got it close, then I tried to help him land it...
"get the gaff!"
His arrow had penetrated and held on this whopper!
He had shot and landed his first buffalo!
We were once again blown away at what was happening! We weren't on the water a half hour and he'd landed two fish already!
This was going to be special!
A couple minutes later, I see him a draw and shoot again...he drills another big buff!
This time it looks as though his arrow isn't in very far, so I draw and shoot it as it speeds by in front of me. I told him I wouldn't even pull on my line unless his arrow fell out.
He fought the fish right to the boat, and with some help landed another big buff...his arrow held again!
There was no stopping him now...he'd made it over a huge hurdle! What a feeling for me to watch this happen right before my eyes...I couldn't believe it!
Then the old pro got into the act...
The next couple hours it was pretty crazy when we got on the fish....a lot more to come...
:clapper:
NICE! I've had a lot of fun shooting fish in those waters.
Cade's red striped arrow in another fish!
By now he was fighting them all by himself until they got to the boat...
Check out the smile on his face...
Another big buff!!!
Sky with another big boy...
Another whopper buff for Cade!
He was hammering fish like an old pro, his arrows were penetrating, and they were holding! I couldn't have dreamed it up any better!!
stay tuned.....
Up to this point I had not landed a single fish, I'd shot at a couple and either lost them or missed. I was mostly just watching Cade and Sky shoot, and helping Cade when he needed it.
There were also some fish we didn't get pix of because we lost them at the boat while trying to lift them or gaff them...we were having a great night!
Just in case you haven't figured it out yet, Skyler can shoot!
Don and I kept talking about how Cade had "figured it all out" and how he was doing just fine all on his own except getting them in the boat. It was time for me to get serious about shooting a few fish.
My first landed fish of the night, a big ol' common carp...
And there's that red striped arrow again!
Not to be outdone, Cade with a giant common carp!
Cruizin' along on a slow stretch, we spotted a real nice gar on our side of the boat....Cade drew, I drew...and I released on his release...in a split second both of our arrows were in the gar with Cade's arrow striking a tad before mine...I'd finally hit a gar, and he hit it before me!
The gar instantly went for the only bit of cover around and got hung up. Don quickly got the boat turned around and I got everything untangled and handed Cade the lines.
This is a cool picture...
Good stuff!
Almost as if someone flipped a switch.
I see some very busy years ahead.....
Congrats on a milestone!
Those fish are as big as him! Nice shooting Cade.

It really was, we couldn't believe what was unfolding before our eyes!
Thank you!

Whistlin' dixie....
Don had Cade lay besides the fish to show their size...
He was having the time of his life!
Skyler boated the next fish...another whopper buffalo!
The blue slide on that arrow means I got an arrow into one...
And it's a big one!
Up to this point I believe this was the biggest of the night...up to this point...
Something very unexpected coming up....
Oh man, i have been waiting to see these picture. I heard about it in part of a phone call and it sounded like a great time.
Congrats Cade. Nice shooting. You and Skyler are a heck of a team.
Humm, funny Curt, your dry in all those picture ??
Super stuff  A lifetime of memories to come!
The fish were piling up, and this wasn't all of them...remember we'd been losing some next to the boat or flopping back in the water before we could get a picture...
He was making it look easy...
As was Skyler...
Then I got an arrow into what ended up being the the biggest of the night...
Skyler with yet another big buff...
Then "it" happened....

Cade hammered another real big buffalo and as he was wrestling it to the boat like a champ...I went for the gaff...
I got the gaff and as Cade got the buff close to the boat, I got the gaff under it and with a quick upward strike, got a solid hit into the fish...but feeling the gaff strike home, the big buff pulled back and got me off balance....
I teetered for a second on the tip of my toes bent over at the waist, but the fish pulled again and I grabbed for the light nearest to me.....the light started to give....by now I'm sure you know whats coming....

When I looked up I saw a horrified look in Cade's face! I could tell he thought I was about to drown or something!
After calming him down I just sat in the water for a second and could hear Skyler saying ...
"camera, camera, camera!" I thought he wanted someone to take a picture....so I just stayed in the water and laughed...
Then it hit me, he was yelling at me because he knew my camera was in the pouch on my belt!!!!
I pulled myself out of the water as quickly as I could....but I'm afraid I was too late!
My camera was fried!!!!!
Except for the camera, this was very funny and just added to an already great trip that was only hours old. The same thing nearly happened to me as I was gaffing one for Sky...those big Buffalo can be very strong.
Most excellent guys!! Good shootin, and great fish!!
Thank goodness it was so warm, both the water and the air temperature!
We continued to have at it....
Don has the rest of the pix for this night....
WOW! That was a *most-excellent* fishing excursion!
Thank you for sharin' the adventure and the young lads' delight!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Memories for a lifetime....
Shoot straight, Shinken
:archer2:
Great looking trip guys! Congrats to you all.
Curt, you scared all the fish away.
Thanks guys...but it's far from over!
Curt and I were both taking pics and I will try to not repeat any pics..... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160103.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160108.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160105.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160106.jpg)
We shot a lot of big fish on this night and don't have pics of all of them. It was as good as it gets for big fish.
It was just meant to be for Cade and Curt to be along on this night. We had tried to save this spot until they arrived but we never dreamed it would be as good as it was that night.
Cade was a machine and he did not need any help from us...all he needed was something to shoot at! (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160117.jpg)
Skyler gettin' it done!
I'd finally gotten my first gar!
Right after Don took that picture of me with the gar I spotted a big buff in the weeds and got a good hit but the arrow pulled right out when I got some tension on it.....
I'd never flipped my barb back over and tightened the tip back up on my Muzzy point....it slid right back off :knothead:
It started to rain on us around 12 and we decided to call it a great night and head home. The following is just a few of the fish we drug out of the boat for a few quick pics...... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160112.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160115.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160114.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160115.jpg) (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160116.jpg)
I have no idea how much that fish of mine weighed in the pic with me and Sky, but as you can see from my face...it was heavy!
I must be getting weak...Skyler sure isn't strugglin' like me :(
Group pic.... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160110.jpg)
What an awesome night of bowfishing, the best I've ever experienced with two of my very, very best friends....and my boy breaking out like he did.....I never would have thought....I was one proud fella...he was awesome!
This was only the first night of three!
More tomorrow ;)
The next pic is kinda gruesome but it sums up what our night was like....... (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k209/rickybob_2006/2012--everything/P3160107.jpg)
Looks like a hoot! Next time you blink Curt, that little guy is going to be walking around shows picking up 70# recurves and pulling them back behind his ear for fun...trust me.
Making memories!
Congrats! your Boys sure know how to shoot ,, so with all that fish do you eat them? and how do you cook or smoke your fish ?? or are they dog food ,, :archer:
What an excellant night on the water, congrats to all, well done.
Awesome to say the least!!!!
Man what a great trip you four had.Congrats to all !.Cade has become a Carps worst nightmare. This should be a great confidence builder for his first year in the deer woods with a bow in hand.I know the effort that you have put into helping Cade getting some fish in the boat.Great job.A year older, bigger, and a few more inches of draw has surely made the difference. After fishing in that sweet bowfishing rig and Carpageddon I hope he will settle for a float in the canoe.Glen
Great pictures and what a hoot. My favorite picture is the one with Cade leaning into and pulling on the line with both hands. I'll bet he was one tired pup after that outing. :saywhat:
Congrats to Cade and to you too Curt. I know how proud you are. Enjoy him all you can now. My youngest of 3 boys turned 21 Back in September.
Hey, Is Sky's bow an old Hoyt GameGetter? If so I haven't seen one of those in years. I had a compound and recurve with the same risers. Great shootn bows.
Good stuff guys. Don
Yee ha ! Thanks for sharing !
Hello Don, yes they are old Hoyt GameGetters. We have 2 of them that Dad bought in the late '80's.
We have a Rambo, which is the same riser, that we are converting to a recurve also.
Great stuff Curt !!!

Tracy
After a short nights sleep, we woke up to a great breakfast fixed up by Tammy. First class all the way...eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, toast...yummy!
Don had to work for a while at the store, so Sky, Cade, me, and my dad headed for unclaimed baggage. I needed a new camera :knothead:
With my new WATERPROOF Olympus cam...we headed for Big Daddy's to see Don and shoot my #57 Kwyk Styk, and my new #57 Raven thru the chronograph...the results I'll add to another thread.
We had a quick lunch at a close by BBQ joint and got home right about the time Don did to make some repairs to the boat trailer. To do so we had to get the boat off of it...so we headed for one of the ponds behind the house. The boys had some fun, while don and I fixed the trailer...

We headed for the water early to see if we could catch some daytime spawning action. This evening and tonight we'd have our good friend with us....the one and only "Robtattoo"!
We hit the water and did if fact get into some fish....Cade wasted no time getting an arrow into a fish, fought it to the boat, and then I lost it trying to get it in the boat!
Minutes later he did it again!

And Cade proved that the previous night was no fluke!
We pulled the boat, and went to another spot to check out a place along the bank of a creek.

That's an 800# California gar right there :D
Curt, as always it was a pleasure spending some time with you guys again. I don't know what all you're feeding that boy, but it sure is working! I can't believe how much he's grown in a year!
Good times!! Thanks for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
PS: Dang I wish Missouri would let us use our bows to take catfish.
Rob, It was a great night bud, we both luv hangin' with (insert English accent)"Robbie"!
Thanx for joining us and enhancing to our adventure :campfire:
Still to come.... Sunday :archer2:
Great trip and I bet Cade will talk about that one for some time. Good on all you guys!
Thanx Tom!
I'll get this wrapped up tonight...
So after getting to bed about 2:30am it was tough getting up Sunday morning. But anyone that's been in camp with me hunting knows that I can't sleep late at all while hunting. Sunday was no different, I was still up before everyone else...But I was beat!
The plan was to go out for breakfast this morning. It took me at least 4 tries to get Cade out of bed...and he's usually like me!
My little man was wiped out...not only lack of sleep, but hauling in all those fish!
The plan for today, our last full day, was to recharge our batteries a bit, shoot some bows, and just enjoy the day before our last night of bowfishing and our long ride home early the next morning.
Don and Sky just happened to have Miss Faith Stalker...I was eager to try her out...

Miss Faith, made by South Cox of Stalker bows is as fine a shooting bow as I've ever shot.
Super smooth, quick, quiet, everything you could ever want in a hunting bow.
Add to that the fact that they are beautifully made with flawless craftsmanship......awesome bow!
The result of Sky's dirty work, Tammy would work her magic with these!!

Cade wanted to go kayaking like last year, and Sky(even though he probably wanted to relax a bit) was nice enough to take him. Cloe beth would join them...

You can see here Sky is having a talk with Miss Cloe...she was having issues with getting splashed by her big brother...

Even though the splashing wasn't on purpose, little Miss Cloe had had enough. She would walk back to the house with me. The boys would stay to kayak and swim.
We had quite a conversation on our was back...

I stopped to try to get a picture of us, but Miss Cloe was playing hard to get and wouldn't smile...

Now I'm hungry, thank you very much!
Good to see that Cade now is big enough to master a killing bow, as he has honed his aim for all these years.
Not having kids, I don't notice the years go by, but watching the kids of TradGang, like Cade and Skyler, gives me the notion that not looking in the mirror is a good idea. Cade is about twice the size he was when I first saw him, and now as the years go by, his growth spurt will match the quickening of my own years.
Good to see that you finally got a bit damp, as that seems to be the mark of a successful bowfisher, Guru.
Killdeer :clapper:
This is the modified Muzzy fish point that worked so well for Cade. It's one of their Carp tips with a slot cut in with a dremmel with a tip section cut off an old 2 blade bh epoxied in. I also filed it to make it a smooth and sleek as possible. It makes a big difference getting the "shoulder" of the barbs through the scales on the way in....

Cade had had enough, he was whooped and was actually back to sleep right after dessert when we left for the night. Tonight it would be Don, me, Sky and his buddy Zach. I'm sure some of you have seen pix of him before, he joins Sky on a lot of his adventures.
Waiting for darkness...

then while cruizin' some muddy water I saw barely saw what looked like a very big fish and quickly shot....and the fight was on!

But I guess I didn't get the arrow in solid and within 30 seconds it was off! Dang it, I wanted that one!!
But we had plenty of gar to shoot at...

Zach ended it on high note with the big catfish!

Hope you all enjoyed it.... thanks to Don for taking so many great pictures, I believe that's more pix than I've ever loaded into one thread! But trips like this deserve the extra effort to be shared with the gang :notworthy:
Some final thoughts later on...

Sunny Hill was right that was an understatment. There are no words to describe this. So awesome. Don and Skyler we need to talk :)
Thanks fellas, but this never would have been possible without the blessing of having friends like the Wilson's!
We luv you guys and can never thank you enough for everything you've fulfilled our lives with.
I've watched Skyler grow up, and the guidance Don has given him along the way. It's always been a fine example for fathers like me with a little aspiring bowhunter to follow...thank you for that buddy.
Skyler is as fine a young man as I've been around. I still refer to him as my "little buddy" even though he's bigger than me now.
Thank you again for everything!
Just found this story.
Congrats! Looks like an awesome time! Looks like Cade is a great shot! :campfire:
WOW :clapper: :clapper:
That was an awesome trip and so proud of Cade and his accomplishments as well as having a Dad like Curt to give him the opportunities he has had in his life and spending so much quality time with a fine young man! He has grown up before our eyes and I look forward to seeing his future accomplishments as well. Only thing is I will sure miss having him in my group at the Muzzy Stump Shoot, but I will definitely be following his progress during the weekend and look forward to seeing how well he does.
Can't wait for that 1st big game kill as well and I know for sure it is coming soon!
Curt and Cade, thanks for setting such a fine example of what "good people" are and living the life!
Next time ya'll plan a bowfishing outing how about letting me know in advance, would love to join ya and bring the boat as well, we could definitely add a bunch more shooters to the mix!
Awesome :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
