Title: Question regarding KE and Momemtum
Post by: stick flipper on July 26, 2007, 11:21:00 PM
I shot my bow thru a chronograph today and weighed my arrows. I was averaging 180fps with 705gr full length chundoo arrows with 160gr point. I did the calculations for KE and momentum, but what I am wondering is if that is good performance from a 64#@31 recurve? The reason I ask this is I am thinking of going up in poundage. I hunt whitetails and I am going to hunt elk in sept. I know my set-up is more than enough, but would it be much of a gain if I went to shooting 70# instead of 64#. would the performance be worth the price of new limbs? I can sho0t 70#, but would it be worth spending $300+ dollars on heavier limbs?

Nope.  Spend it on camo, rain gear, a knife, good sleeping bag, etc.  You have plenty of bow for elk, more than most.

You could kill an Opal with that set-up.

Before I would spend $300 on limbs I would experiment with heavier arrows unless you are dead set at shooting 180FPS.  If you can shoot 175FPS with a heavier arrow you might see your number increase where you are happy.

If you use roughly the same arrow setup, and assuming equal bow efficiency and perfect arrow flight from both, the bit you would gain from the 70# limbs wouldn't be worth anywhere near the $300.00 cost. Arrow setup is far more important than the draw weight of your bow. Besides, it's too close to hunt time. I'd say, dance with who brung you! However, if you also WANT a heavier set of limbs, well, that's a different matter! Ain't no such thing as having too many bows!
