Last week I was trying to get my wife to listen to how I was going to afford a longbow, when she finally couldn't take it any longer and said, "FINE! It was going to be a surprise but I'm getting you one for father's day." I love her. And while I'm sorry I ruined her surprise, it's for the best. Otherwise I would have sold her car or something to finance a new bow.
So, I've been studying and researching for the past few weeks and I decided to go with a hunter model from Nate Steele (bamabows). I've yet to read a negative thing about him or his bows. I really like that style of bow, from my limited experience. So, I called him up today and made it official.
I went with a dark curly maple riser and bamboo limbs. 66" amo and 53# at 28". I can't wait to shoot it.
And an early "thank you" to my beautiful and thoughtful wife.
thats great !!! congrats. glad you didnt sell her car. she might have gotten upset over that. :biglaugh:
"would have sold the car"...now that's funny. These are great bows. Best of luck. Pix please.

Will definitely happen once I get it.
Nate makes a fantastic bow, & and is a riot to talk to on the phone. You will be very pleased. He manages to find some beautiful curly maple.
Awesome! I'm about halfway through my waiting period with Nate right now :)

Nice! Which one are you getting?
You will not be disapointed. I have one of his Hunters and just ordered a T/D version.
The hardest part is the wait...
Excellent choice, the bow AND the wife! :bigsmyl:
I was shooting my Bama Royal earlier, and Nate is working on a new 2pc Expedition for me right now. You're gonna love the bow.

I read and read and read and I've seen nothing but glowing reviews. I thought I'd get one while I could because I have no doubt his prices will go up as his name grows.

AND the wife!
She's a wall-hanger for sure! ;)
Believe it or not, she's a hippie yoga instructor. But, she understands hunting and likes to eat wild game.
Just received his Expedition Hunter in 2-piece. All I can say is wow! His D/R model has some odd waves through the limb, which I have applicably named "speed bumps". Darkly stained curly maple riser, bamboo cores, black glass limb overlays, black phenolic nocks with curly maple overlays. Smokes an arrow like no other longbow I've owned. Quiet as a church mouse. Everyone I shoot with always wants to shoot my Bama! This bow is a hunter for sure. Nate was top shelf to deal with and responded to all my questions and change orders in a timely and polite manner. Just plain ole good people...

Can you post photos of that? I came up with the exact some color and wood combinations for the hunter I ordered. I'm anxious to see it. I know what it looks like in my head, but I haven't seen a photo of one exactly like that.
And I agree about Nate. So far he has been awesome to deal with. I know next to nothing about traditional but he's patient and helpful in steering me in the right direction.
My Hunter has a Curly Maple riser I love it great shooting longbow, I also have a Royal and 2 Expeditions Relex/Deflex! You are right a ole Nate he is easy to talk to and your bow will truly be a work of art!
Hi Chromebuck,
x2 on the pics, Please post them. I am going to put a downpayment ina day or two for expedition hunter and would like to see how your looks in wood combination you chose.
Regarding Nate, I've been in touch with him for sometime now as my friend got his Hunter from him. He is an awesome guy to deal with and very patient with questions. Even with my stupid ones. :)

Scott,
I can post pics this afternoon (for me). Couple of additonal comments. I did have the bamboo cores stained to match the riser and the amount of curley in my maple is very sparse if at all. Had I ordered a Royal perhaps I would have complained, but when I released that first arrow it was evident this bow would be part of my static collection. It is an extremely viable hunting instrument. Unbelievable cast. I'm running Beeman ICS 400 full length(32")with 245 gr. up front. 4" 4 fletch. Amazing speed and penetration. It's got to be the "speed bumps". Nate can give a really intelligent and understandable explanation to his deflex/reflex limb design so I'll save myself the embarassment. Just ask him...
Pics later,

I ordered this:
Hunter T/D: 64 inch 52# @28"
Limbs: 2 lams of bamboo surrounded by black glass
Riser: Bocote
Riser accent strip: bamboo | cocobolo | bamboo
Riser overlay: cocobolo with bocote on top
tips: phenolic under cocobolo with bocote on top
Grip: Brown Leather sewn on
inscription: CANT/SHOOT
:)
These are a no frills, get it done bow. Without the two piece option they are under $600.00. Tried to show the limb profile, but they were too blurry.

I love it! That's exactly what I ordered, except I asked for black leather, and of course mine isn't the takedown version. Thanks for sharing!
All you guys with your bows make me jealous, and I'm sure those of you waiting like me are as anxious as I am.
If anybody wants to talk some more about how awesome their Bamabow is, go ahead. I'm going to need all the distractions I can get for the next 8-12 weeks.
Here are my Bamas top to bottom: Hunter and Royal longbow, My Expi Osage Takedown 62in, and my Expi Hunter 60in! Lovem all!

Perhaps I need to get my head checked because a month ago Nate gifted me his personal Expedition Royal 2-piece (last set of pics - http://www.bamabows.com/expedition.html ) and I declined because these aggressive deflex-reflex bows just don't float my boat.
One thing that almost made me change my mind was his comment about his 65# DR bow shooting more like a 75# D-bow. That's really saying something because Rob D. commented about his Bama Hunter (D-bow) being the fastest AFL he had ever shot.
To scratch my Hill itch, Nate will build me a more Hillesque longbow. A design he may well add to his catalog of bows once he is satisfied with it.
To the above he may also add laminated English Warbows. A bow I am most anxious to try.
Recently I have been in touch with three highly regarded longbow bowyers and they are all gentlemen of the first water but communicating with Nate is like talking to an old chum. Just don't tell him I was praising him or his work. :D
I like that so many of you Bamabow owners are repeat buyers. Nate seems to be developing a loyal fan base.
What's all this about 'buyers'? Didn't Nate pay you to use his bow?

Looks like I've been taken. He didn't pay me at all.
Now that's funny! :goldtooth:
Just ordered my third.a royal expediton r/d 62 amo 55@28.His new design feels like theres a let off half way back.really smooth and fast.i went with bamboo core, with osage veneers.the riser is going to be marblewood.Nate is someone i trust. He will be making more for me in the future.Thank you Mr Steele
Nate is working on my 5th right now, a 62" Expi Hunter, 2pc. I've got one in 58" and I hear the 62" is super smooth. :bigsmyl:
Look Guys, I don't want to seem pushy, but a lot of you already have some of his bows. I feel like valuable time that could be devoted to building MY bow is being wasted on the ever growing list of people in this thread alone who are also waiting on a bow from him right now. My wait time could be dramatically decreased if you'd all call him up and tell him to suspend work on your bows until mine is finished. Do the right thing.
:bigsmyl:
Well Scott, you have a good point there, we are being very selfish. I would gladly ask Nate to push mine back and jump right in on yours, but I'm afraid the consequences might be tragic. :scared:
You see, Nate is one of those sensitive and eccentric artists. If we threw a wrench into his plans it might push him over the edge. Heck, he might totally freak out and do something crazy, like start building.....Recurves!!! :scared:
I just got home from the range. I was shooting my 2pc Royal and there was a guy there shooting a compound. He has never even seen a longbow before! I was going to work form on the 10 yard target and he came over from the 40 yarder to look at it. He was a nice guy and I let him shoot a few. He loved it!
Hey, is that a Falcon in your profile? That's a beautiful and regal bird. I love raptors. It must be really something to handle such an awesome creature.

Haha, fair enough. It's supposed to be a father's day gift anyway, so I'll wait.
You probably converted the guy at the range. I'm just getting my feet wet and I already don't see me ever picking my compound back up.
Yes, I'm a licensed falconer. This was my first year and that was my first bird, Indra. She's a red-tailed hawk. I actually just released her not long ago and am making plans for my next bird in September. They are truly awe-inspiring animals, especially to see one do a wing-over and slam a fleeing bunny, or corkscrew down a tree trunk after a squirrel at high speed.
They are beautiful predators for sure. I've seen them dive on Pigeons and once had one fly right in front of me with a still squirming Squirrel in it's talons. I didn't know you had to have a license to be a falconer. Very cool hobby!
Hey guys, it's been 5 weeks and 3 days since I officially put in my order, not that I'm counting.
So, I'm about to the halfway point, if it takes the full 12 weeks of the 8-12 week estimate.
I need recommendations on how to pass the time. It's standing still. I've already made up some arrows that I'm going to use as a starting point. I used up most of my scrap leather making a back quiver. I've read and watched everything I could find on the internet. Now what?
You guys show me photos or tell me stories or something.
Go turkey hunting
I never got into turkey hunting much. My dad loves it. I'd probably like it more if I had private land to hunt on. Hunting turkeys on public land is like trying to hook up with the pretty girl at a party. There's only one, and as soon as she gobbles, 34 dudes surround her.
Well, Nate was gluing on my tips yesterday. So, we must be getting close! What a great father's day gift!
