Me and a friend are heading to Hunters Point, to hunt with Eldon 3rd week of sept. My first and maybe only bear hunt, cant wait to sling a shaft at one. I use ACE STd, 170gr. total or Wensel woodsmans, with about 500grain total arrwo weight, from about #50 here to deer and turkey hunt, does this sound about right for you guys with experience hunting bear?
That will work fine. But a big 160 grain snuffer will put em down fast.
Plenty
Great setup for bears. You will have the time of your life hunting with Eldon
We're about on the same page. I'm planning on taking a #50 Quinn stallion, about 575 with 200gr. Vpa on the front of a 2016.
You should be fine, Sam. Sharpness and placement will be the key and both of those heads sharpen and shoot very well. Have Fun!
bears are a hoot. they look at you with those beedee eyes. You set up is great....
Sam I've shot with you I don't think your setup is even going to matter, those arrows stick in the ground no matter what they weight. lololol Oh I'm just kidding ol buddy. See ya in a couple of weeks.
Most blinds or stands are 20 yds and under. Your setup should work just fine. A sharp head into the vitals and your animal shouldn't run more than 50-60 yds. Good luck on your bowhunt....bears are addicting to hunt and just plain fun as Joe Ashton stated.
D I usually shoot better with something with hair on it! Cant eat styrofoam! LOL! Biothlanman, I will be using my Quinn as well, my go to bow! Any preferences on 2 blade versus 3 blade?
Bears are easy to penetrate unless you hit a heavy bone.(such as shoulder blade). I too am going this Fall. I will be shooting 50-52 #lb Morrison Shawnee with 635 grain Beeman Classic 400 with brass insert and a Centaur Big Game Head.
Personally if you ask Eldon he will tell you to use a two blade, only take broadside shots and you will have a short trail. I agree with the broadside shots but all the bear I have killed (6) have been with 3 or 4 blade heads. I think sharpness and shot placement are key. My wife took her first bear with a 45# recurve and a four blade Phantom. The bear only made it 30 yards and it was a pass thru. What you describe as your set up is totally adequate. Use what has worked best for you in the past. Woodsman heads have done very well at Eldon's.
koger glad your coming up . I guide for eldon an if there are any questions feal free to ask . Hay Bill im finaly shooting a long bow .

I have found this set up work for me, into the ground as well!
I will be chasing them with a 160 snuffer. As mentioned they're fairly easy to penetrate.
Just make them sharp Sam and don't forget the hero shots bud. Can't wait to see them.
I shot my first with a we 125 arrow 545 went 30 yds. Second with a 2 blade steelforce pharmacy head 225 arrow 585. Went 35 yds. Either will do the job if placement is good. Have a great time.
I don't have any suggestions, but I am jealous. Good luck on your hunt.
