Title: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: Zradix on March 15, 2012, 10:59:00 AM
Asked Kirk Lavender of Bigfoot bows to build me a 1 piece Longbow a while back.

Just got these pics yesterday.......

Mine is the mostly bocote one which will have a zebra accent.
I'm more than a little excited...lol

Thanks for the pics Kirk!

That is goinjg to be a great combination. the woods are so similar in pattern but a different color. Great wood too.

You are going to love this bow.

God bless you, Steve

Appears to be much further a long than the 1st few chips from the marble.

A masterpiece in-progress is quite evidently foreshadowed.

Zradix, what's the weight going to be? I bet you're excited. I have a TD Sasquatch ordered in zebrawood at 44#. Congratulations, give us a review when you get it.

I'll try to do a good review thats for sure.

Well...whoever gets the other riser will be getting a good looking one.

That section of bocote that was used for the accent had really neat grain.

Actually John, I've got a really good idea who is getting the other side  :bigsmyl:  Here is a pic I got from Kirk yesterday, look familiar?

I still have the PMs we traded back in November talking about hybrids, and now our bows are being made out of the same blocks of wood! Too cool!

I wonder if Kirk has realized these sisters will be shipping within 50 miles of each other?

That accent strip is going to have really cool grain....heck your whole bow is going to be pretty!

Small world Bro!

I got bumped down the list last year when I changed my order from a Yeti to a Sasquatch. I was worried about finger pinch on a 56" bow at 31+" draw. Pretty funny that you picked bocote with zebra and I ordered the opposite. Wood types is something we never discussed!

Mine will be a 3 piece takedown longbow. As excited as I am about the riser, I'm actually more excited about the limbs. I can't wait to see how those look!!! I look forward to seeing what options you picked off the dream sheet!I think mine will have one good surprise in store for you!

Obviously we're gonna have to get together and shoot these when they come in!

Hey John, I rode my motorcycle a lap around your place today (Grand Haven, Fremont, Newago, Baldwin, Ludington, Silver Lake, Muskegon) I thought about our bows as I went past M-20 both ways.

I got two new teasers from Kirk while I was out too, check them out!

I love the fangs, and you're right I think I've caught some good bocote grain in there! I can't wait to see what these look like as they start to round out!!!

They are coming together in deed!

So we've all got longbows on order; two TDs, and a 1 piece in the works!

My order is in at 56@32 on a 60" 3 piece longbow. I release at 31.5" but I have this over-draw problem I'm trying to correct so I thought to be safe I'd order it a touch heavy and long.

It was really helpful to send Kirk a DVD of me shooting a few bows. We talked about my form and his designs on the phone and after weighing a bunch of options came up with this combo.

Dang Thom..that's a looong draw.
You must get some quick arrows no matter what you're shooting.

Mine is a 62"Sas LB one piece about 46# at 29.25" AMO draw.
Kirk is setting her up for a really high wrist shooting form I have.
This is my first quality custom bow.
I had ordered another bow a few years ago FROM A DIFFERENT BOWYER that was just a nightmare.

This is going sooo smoothly it's just awesome.

Well here's a little tease for you Thom....

I pulled out some of these zebra lams i've had stashed and ran them through the sander. This photo is just rough cut stuff, and still has a few saw marks. wait till you see this stuff under glass.

WOW! This is going to be an awesome looking bow!!! For those following, I asked for zebra under clear glass for the back and belly. Those are gonna look great with that riser!

Kirk, I hope you can snap a picture of the inner lams before you glue them up, it'll be my only chance to see them

That is true, but it's a double edged sword when it comes to finger pinch or just plain stopping before anchor. I've been shooting/hunting longer bows to get around this, mostly a 70"er but it's kinda tough to use that in a blind/ up a tree/ in the brush. Anyway, that situation is what led me to calling Kirk, and eventually to this thread!

I've always wanted to shoot my bows through a chronograph because I'm curious just how much of a performance gain it is. Last year I bought a long Howard Hill from a fellow TGer drawing 26" and it's a whole different animal when I shoot it! I ordered a chronograph this morning, I figured I better check it out now since I'm selling all my bows except this one. Yeah, I plan to be that "one bow" guy.

Those are some pretty limb lams...jeesh...lol
They're going to look GREAT with that riser!

I'd like to be a "one bow guy' too.

Hopefully this new sas will help me convert.

If  I had a 29.5 or 31.5 draw length they would be calling me Sasquatch and not the bow  :bigsmyl:
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!

The proof is in the pudding Pete.
Nothing wrong with black glass.
..heck when I first ordered my bow I opted for brown glass...but the bug got a hold of me too deep and I went for veneers.

Good for you for being stronger than me..lol

To have a bow specifically made for your shorter draw will be such an improvement.

I used to shoot with a 26.5" amo draw.
I started using a shorter bow that stopped..not stacked but stopped at that shorter draw.

The improvement in speed was pretty amazing.

Woods/ veneers/ color of glass...man that's all superficial stuff.

The design and grip is where IT'S AT.

I've always been a fan of "sleepers".

Have a feeling yours might just fit that category perfectly.

Iam sure Kirk will meet everyones expectations.Iam really looking forward to seeing that Zerawood under clear glass. If you and Sticks get together and shoot thru the chrony let me know how it turns out. cant wait till the next set of pictures.  :bigsmyl:

That's pretty funny guys, my original order for the Yeti went in for black glass over bamboo. It was going to just be a "hunting bow" that I could drag through the bush and toss in the back of the truck... then I started seeing pictures of some of the veneers that Kirk was putting in his bows. Needless to say, you saw his last picture!

Pete, since you got the TD you always have the option of getting another set of limbs down the road!

I can see this thread is going to be kind of fun.

We will have both ends of the Sasquatch spectrum with a long draw and short draw with the same length bow...... Wait.... i better check on that. I think Pete went with the 58"...

Yup, Pete's is a TD Sas Lb-58, And Thom has the TD Sas Lb-60. Right in the middle John has a 1Pc Sas-62" with a 29.25" draw

Hey Pete,  If it makes you feel any better the black glass is faster than the clear glass and the limb overlays will be done from this same batch of zebra veneers.  I'll get some more photos up this evening with your riser included Pete.

Wow!  i just looked outside and it's SNOWING!   :dunno:

Yeah Pete, I've heard people say putting black glass front and back, then stuffing the middle with bamboo lams is the highest performance combo you can get without using carbon. I don't know if it's true or not, but one of my bows is like this and it's a shooter! Maybe Kirk will chime in his two cents on this.

OK guys put your bibs on and cover your key boards so you don't slobber all over them....

First of all here is Pete's riser block.

I know.... i know... she may look a little plain Jane in this form Pete.... BUT.... check out the end grain on this thing. This stuff is running off on a 45 degree angle.

You might be saying, "So what???"... what this means is it's going to do some wild things when i shape you grip.... That's what.

while we are on your stuff Pete here are some walnut lams I'm thinking of using between that black glass. this stuff is ultra light weight and will turn up the performance a bit from bamboo cores.

Of course it's your choice if you'd rather have bamboo...

Your next John.... you got a big choice to make here. these are the bocote veneers i have on hand.
The strips are darker colored with a bit wilder grain pattern.... But.... the large veneer has a very nice figured ripple that will show up nicely under glass.....

Take your time.... you've got a few days to make up your mind here...   :biglaugh:   Good luck on this one...

Thom, your next...

Now this stuff may not excite a lot of folks. but to a bowyer, this is some to die for Yew wood for core stock. Pacific Yew wood cores have the closest flexibility and strength properties I've found to bamboo, only its lighter in mass weight.
it's tough to find it absolutely clear of small pin knots like this stuff.

The combination of Yew wood and Zebra is going to make a seriously smooth drawing, very quick set of limbs.

Yew and longbows makes sense to me, doubly true when I'm ordering one from the Pacific Northwest!

It feels almost criminal to cover these up, I can't see anything but what looks like a couple little sharpie marks on these! I know I haven't looked at wood grains as much as many, but this looks fantastic compared to any yew I've seen before. I am in awe.

Thank you for telling me that you had this tucked away, and thank you for snapping a few pictures before it gets pressed between the veneers!

Sticks you have it made , just sit back and wait for the finished product, John  and myself have to make some decisions. Should I go with Walnut or grass for the core and John has to pick a veneer.  :banghead:    :banghead:  I have to agree I think that block of Zebrawood is going to make a fantastic looking riser. John what ever veneer you choose its going to look good.
Kirk I will let you know my choice very soon still thinking.  :banghead:

These yew cores was my bow's little secret I hinted at on the first page. For months I couldn't wait to see them, and I still can't wait to shoot them!!! I wonder if Sixby is still watching this thread?

Those tough choices the two of you are working on will just add to the enjoyment of this thread for me, and anyone else following it! I look forward to seeing what you guys choose!

those strips of yew are some of the cleanest wood of any kind I've seen in a long time...excellent!

Jeez that is some seriously cool zebra veneers.

....I'm still thinking about my enviable decision to make.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on March 19, 2012, 10:11:00 PM
IDK Mike, it only took me six months to figure out this bow. I have been driving this prius since '08 trying to figure out what my next truck will be... BTW thanks for not killing off all the pigs at Ray's place last weekend, I'm sure it took a huge amount of restraint to leave a few for me. I enjoyed the stories, and I look forward to the ones you haven't published yet!

John, you lucky dog, you'll probably get to shoot those yew limbs sometime soon! The great news about your veneers is that they all look good! It's just picking the ones YOU like and enjoying them in the years to come. Not a bad set in there from my perspective.

The looks of your limbs is one thing, but I'm wondering what Pete is going to decide between the boo and walnut. Seems like he's got the really tough choice ahead of him!

However it shakes out, we are three very lucky guys.

We are lucky..no doubt about it.

Never shot a yew cored bow..looking forward to it!

Never shot a walnut core either, but that's what's coming to my place.

Looking forward to you showing me how well my bow can shoot...just don't try that crazy 32" draw on it...lol

But I really do have a thing for crazy grain.

You still want those Purple heart wedges don't you John?

QuoteI wonder if Sixby is still watching this thread?
i think Steve is using the same Yew wood that i am. then again... he may have gone though that batch.

Hey Thom... I can always put the Zebra in the core and have the yew under glass.

Of course I am following this thread. Kirk is right. I have the same yew. I am building two bows with it right now. one a Talon recurve with paradox walnut and macassar and another belly mounted D and R with triple carbon and yew cores. That one is paradox walnut and yew. I seriously love yew accents in a riser.
You guys are getting some super nice bows here. I really love those bocate veneers you chose. Purple heart wedges are really cool.    Ha ha. I have used them with yew and sage and they do look good with those woods. yellow and purple are complimentary colors.
God bless you all, Steve

mmmmmm...paradox walnut...mmmmm

I just plain love neat wood grain.

Thanks Stephen..I hope I made the right choice...don't really think I could've gone wrong either way.

I can definitely see how yew and purple heart could look really nice together.

I've thought that tulip wood with a little purple heart accents could look really nice too.

We must have similar tastes John, because I would have picked the same ones. Not that you had any chance of going wrong with any of those. I haven't shot a walnut core bow myself, I don't recall ever noticing it as an option but I see it on he ordering form now that I'm looking at it.

For me, I'm perfectly happy with the zebra/bocote/blood wood combo. No need to go changing a great thing as I think the bow will look awesome this way. (BTW I thought my tips were going to be bocote over blood wood if I didn't do the antler tip upgrade. Maybe Kirk is pulling my leg now.)

I shared a hunting camp with Jay St Charles a while back and we got to talking yew, it was quite an education! Understanding how rare it is to find completely clear yew grain, you are two lucky fellas to have some of this on hand! Now that yew under some clear glass on a long Boot Hill with some purple heart.... Too bad I declared my "one bow" aspiration publicly    :knothead:

Picking wood combinations  I think is probably harder than picking the right bow I keep changing my mind on want combination I want for my Sasquatch order in a couple of months. I know bacote will be one of them but I've choppeded & changed my mind on the other several times. Good thing is still have acouple of months.

Good choice Pete. Walnut is very strong and light.

Misconception on the brace heightin that Not all foreward riser bows have high brace. My Sasquatch from Kirk is right at 7 inches;

My own foreward riser bows all have brace heights from 6 1/2to 7 1/4 inches.

On top of that the Sasquatch is one of the quietest most stable bows I have ever shot. Kirk has a really great limb design with high early weight that stabilizes at a low brace. The string on my Sasquatch is 59 inches on a 62 in recurve bow.

God bless you all, Steve

Hey Pete,

Keep in mind i build these things "Draw length specific" .... That 58" of yours will brace as low as 6" and still have good preload. I'll bet the sweet spot runs 6.25" to 6.75" on that bow.

Another thing to remember is that this thing will stack like cord wood at 27-28" when i get done with it. So when someone asks to shoot your bow.... Just say "No"

Here's a Douglas fir/ wenge veneer under clear glass Thom... this stuff looks identical to Yew wood under glass once it darkens up.

The wood leaning up in my shop is my Yew stash your veneers came from.

Yes Kirk I know what you are talking about, we tossed around brace height when I was placing order.Even like  with Sixbys  Talon, being draw specific,  I have had to refuse some of my freinds shooting it, some are even bigger than Sasquatch. They have to go to the four corners to turn around,

Here is the update from my little workbench across the country!

I got a dozen shafts and all my feathers in. I cut the first two shafts down 1/4" and 1/2", and pulled one shaft out of the bundle to keep full length. I fletched up these 3 and put on the 170 grain field tips so I'm ready to start tuning as soon as the bow arrives!

Looking at the zebra, I'm thinking a yellow and black string might be a nice combo. anyone else have a different combo in D97 that they think would look sharp? Maybe 3 ply orange/yellow/black... I do have red on hand and that might look nice too.

If I need to order a new color I want to get that in so I can twist up a pair of strings, leave the original as a template after it's shot in a little.

I'm torn between doing a yellow center serving and my normal black/white braided. Need to finalize my string colors before I worry about this too much.

I've got a hunting trip in a month so it will be tight, but I still hope I can hunt this bow!!!

Thom,

Not sure if the yellow, sunset orange, or even the cedar would match better..I haven't seen any of them in person..or your core for that matter.

If I'd say white, black, and a couple strands of core matching color.

Too bad they don't make the "natural" color in d97..just the 452X. I think that would look a bit better than white.

Are you getting clear or the amber tint sealer?

...I went with the amber....not Purple tint Kirk..lol

If you went with amber I'd throw out the white and go with your black and whatever matches the core idea.

More importantly, I'm                     for you to have picked the right spine shafts.

I have my feathers chopped and and my pattern dyed on them (red feathers / black pattern) and all the other stuff that goes with em.

I'm waiting to shoot my test arrows and then order the shafts.

I can understand with your time constraints why you're trying to stack the deck.

REALLY, REALLY REALLY hope it works out for you!
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on March 21, 2012, 11:36:00 AM
My bow will be under amber too, the examples Kirk sent me of the zebra under that were spectacular!!!

I've thought about trying Astro Flight, but, I can get 3 x 1/8# spools of D97 in different colors for the same price as one 1/4# spool of AF. I've seen a few bows that look good with white strings, maybe this will be one of them. I'll give this some thought and see if any other ideas pop up here over the next couple days. Luckily this stuff ships fast to where we live!

As for the arrows, I'm really comfortable with my guess for this bow. I run 2117s on all my bows between 51 and 60 at draw, and this one should be right in the middle. I've got almost 3 inches sticking out the front to trim on, and broadheads ranging from 100 to 250 grains. I can also work with the side plate and string setup if I need a little extra tuning. Besides, if I'm completely wrong I know the guys at the local shop really well and they would get me dialed in with a good combo and send me out the door with a dozen finished arrows the same day if I'm in a pinch.

Did somebody say "waiting is the hardest part"???
Thom

As for your string Thom, that's an area i don't mess with, but the color i just happen to have for your bow is a Black & yellow 12 strand D97.

I've just recently ordered some SBD strings in a 10 strand & 8 strand, I'll be using in the future.

Wow, how amazingly cool is that!!! With the way this thing is coming together it might be easier to be a one-bow guy afterall! It's amazing how whippy they look at this point for being potentially 55# limbs!

12 strand FF yellow/black sounds perfect! I don't shoot less than that because of the very thin gloves I shoot. I'll play with 12-16 on this bow when I get it to see where it likes to be the best. I will also pad the loops to compliment the grooves however you carve them.

A sincere thank you for shooting that video! That's about the coolest thing I've seen on tradgang, but I may be just a touch partial  :)

We are a funny bunch, the three of us seem to have every extremity covered:
- Wood/aluminum/carbon arrows
- Short/medium/long draw
- One piece/take downs
- Short/medium/long lengths
Crazy that we all ordered the "same bow" to cover all our different needs!

Those longer wedges look SWEET! Black walnut? Glad to see you getting pics before the black glass goes on these!

As for me, looks like I'll need a recurve case with those crazy curves in my limbs!!

Btw.... Pete, that black power lam in tour limbs is Wenge. It turns coal black when finished and will tie into your black accents....

It's amazing to me that you can get 4 strips of flat grain, relatively porous wood of that size down to .018"...I mean I just measured a small exacto blade..the same thickness..

Cool idea with the hinge system...always be on the look out for a better way...looks like you found one!

The mosaic materials on that block is a very dark black walnut and bamboo. i did another block using the same pattern using Wenge and bamboo and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Two down, one lay up to go here. Then things really start getting interesting...

You know what they say about guys with big hands... they need a big grip on their bow!

That sharpie on the riser block looks like my big grip bigfoot! Watching the woods and grains has been very cool, but this is the moment where I finally can see the first hint at a bow inside that block!

Looking good on your block too Pete!!!

I also like a high wrist, but I've got big hands so I requested an extra big grip. Actually I've never held a bow that felt like the handle was big enough.

My favorite grip so far is my Quinn recurve. I bought one after reading a bunch of threads about people complaining about how they are "just too big and blocky"  :)

I did hand traces for Kirk and emailed a few measurements along with a DVD of me shooting some bows. I figured the more he knew the better my chances of getting something good for me!

I also asked for the grip to be as far up to the shelf as reasonable. I have one bow where the arrow almost touches my knuckle and I like it! We'll see where it all ends up!

Hopefully we'll get to see some pics of a one piece soon!

Well it's getting late here and I'm ready to hit the shower and dive into the sack....But first...

We have something resembling a bow here i thought I'd post.

First off we have the parts

And here is the step by step going into the form.

Now we are cooking!

Notice those wedges there? That's my insurance i get good tight lamination's in the belly ramps without turning up the pressure to much

Here ya go John, Yours is the first one that has got the right shape.

These pics don't do your work justice.
They make it look too easy.
Just "poof" and a bow is glued up.

Doesn't give a clue into the hours of thought, designing and building the molds, the templates, R&D, sanding, and all the other stuff I don't know about..

These ugly ducklings grow up to be beautiful bows that shoots lights out and burn barns down . When you get these bows you will understand.

My daddy used to say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The proof of these bows in in your hand when you shoot the first arrow.

Now when brags like this are made they have to be backed up. Kirk is not making this brag but I guarantee you that he will back it up with the bows you get.

I expect to the phone to ring now about any time and I will get my spanking LOL.
God bless you, Steve

Wow this thread went dead for 7 hours! crazy! Does everyone shoot leagues on Friday night?

I've got some good news, I went from 3 bows to 2 today. A nice step off on my "one-bow guy" journey. I'll let go of one more in the near future, but I'm going to hold back one until I get this one in hand and tuned in!

I also organized all of my spare strings and arrows that are too short, looks like good give-aways and donation stuff!

Can't wait to see if anything gets posted from Oregon tonight!

I haven't figured out how to over write over the audio yet so i just muted it.

Basically what i'm doing here is laying out the riser and getting a true center line before milling the hardware. Getting the exact bisection of the pad angles make a huge difference in balancing the limbs out and eliminating hand shock.

try his link.

I need you guys with TD's to look at my new "Riser Design" page and tell me whether you want the "Radius back"  or the "Flair Back"  shape.

Std limb mount, or "Flush Mount" is another question... you got a couple days to make up your mind, but sooner is better..... Kirk
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on March 24, 2012, 12:21:00 PM
Just going for looks, Flair Back and Flush Mount seem like they'd make it the prettiest with everything else going on with this bow.

I gotta ask you though, what do you think? If you think I'll need any extra strength of a TD Radius Back and phelonic or something I would certainly want to know your opinion.

Thanks Kirk! BTW video works fine and it's nice to get a glimpse of my riser with the sharpie marks!

Looks like both of you guys "got lucky" with what was under your tape

As for me, I feel like I hit the lottery!!! Everyone has personal tastes, and this matches mine perfectly and is even better than I though it could look!

I changed my mind on the limb mounts. I'm going to go with standard afterall. I have some antler bolts and a limb mount Slim Jim Angle quiver. If I went flush or hidden I couldn't use it. I'm posting this publicly so everyone can see what Kirk puts up with.

Looks like you guys have your riser cuts set in stone, I better PM Kirk so I can get some sharpie marks on mind!

Ok guys if everyone has their coffee in them now, i'll post a couple photos of these things looking like bows.  I got a little further along yesterday than just mounting limbs.

Here you go Pete.  She's at your draw length in this photo on the tree with   rough limb profile  , I and hit poundage perfectly.

This bow is a 58" being drawn to 24.25" and i'm at about 50 pounds here.

Keep something in mind here guys. I'm just checking weight on these at this stage and the limbs have yet to be balanced out. so don't concern yourself with slight irregularity in the limb shape top and bottom here.

Ok John here you go. This one piece bow is a 62" model being drawn to 29.25". I'm setting right at 52 pounds here and she's pretty out out balance at the moment.  you'll note the lower limb is bending a wee bit more than the top limb on the right.

No worries.... i got the rough width a fuzz wider at the top in this photo. These are just rough profiled at this stage, but the poundage is perfect.

I saved the long draw photos for last here..... Our friend Thom has these arms long enough to scratch his ankles without bending over.

Here she is.... 60" AMO length at a Full 32" draw, weighing in at 67 pounds. My target weights at rough profile are always 5 pounds over. This one i kept the limbs a bit wider on rough profile to make sure i hit weight ok. I don't build a lot of these for a 32" draw, so i was hedging my bets a bit. You can always narrow them down a bit, but you can't put it back on there if it comes in light.

as it turned out, the extra width was unnecessary. After i do some pruning we should hit our target weight at 56@32" just fine.

The tips are still running long, and the brace is low here. So it's kind of looking like a recurve at the moment.

Check out the string angle Thom. You've got another inch before this thing starts stacking.   :goldtooth:

Kirk, my son has been after me to use a laser. LOL
Looks like it works great.

God bless you all, Steve
Hey Steve,

I've had a couple different laser set ups for quite awhile now and it took awhile to get a set up that didn't give false readings. It's absolutely critical that your riser block is on the same plane as the laser beam. If the angle is off at all it will not give you a straight line through the recurve portion of the limb.

I've tried using the real expensive laser levels with a gyroscope that we used to use for setting flat work concrete forms and screed pins, and it was a lot more difficult to get your set up dialed in. It was faster just using a string line and your eyeball.

This is an inexpensive laser with a tripod leveling system. With my toggle vise here i can level up the riser and the laser in a few minutes time and it just takes all the fight right out of it bro. This set up is REALLY nice on radical recurve limbs.

On my milder R/D long bows i still use a string to check things out more than i do the laser.

Thank you

That is truly a thing of beauty! I can't believe that string angle is at 32" on a 60" longbow! My fingers are going to thank you in the years to come!

I'll be honest, had those limbs come in at anything over #40 pound minimum hunting weight, I was going to offer to buy them as a second set because they are just that beautiful! I'm extra happy to know I can have one set of limbs to be both my range and hunting limbs! 56#@32 sounds like the perfect combo for this draw and those woods on that design. Thanks again for all the time you've taken with me to work this plan out ahead of time.

I can't stop staring at it Kirk, that is looking fantastic! I better add this reply and start cleaning the drool off my keyboard.

The angle at the tips is pretty amazing considering bow length and draw.

Sure am glad to hear everybody's bow is looking good for weight too.

Well guys.... Your bowyer worked on his lawn mower instead of your bows today.   :scared:

I hate it when that happens.

I did get some cleaning done out there in the shop this afternoon, so i'll be rolling up my sleeves in the morning and get back after it.

there won't be many good photo ops while i work on getting the limbs all balanced out and timed, but i'll get a couple film clips on shaping the risers for you and the overlay work.

Pete,   is this your hand?

Sorry to hear you were working on the lawn and not out steelheading or something fun!

I was looking back and page 13 of this thread has to be my favorite page of any thread I think I've ever seen on TG! I'm sure those pics and videos will hold me over for a while!  Also for you other guys, there are a couple videos on the channel that didn't get posted here. You gotta watch Kirk moving fast with the super glue on the hardware installation for Pete's TD mounts!

My Howard Hill sold yesterday, when it ships I'll be officially longbow-less until the Sasquatch arrives. Holding back one recurve to help me transition, I'm not sure which one of the 12 steps this is    :dunno:   I think it the one right before you are temped to put a deposit on another bow...

You guys have a great one!

Being able to see the options you're contemplating come to life.

Not to mention finding out what type of work Kirk will do on his own if you just give him some space to do it.

I sure am happy as heck with what he has decided on when I gave him no real direction to go in.

Seems like he always wants to add that little touch that takes things from custom to "TRUE CUSTOM".

...and that's worth noticing in my book.

All true! I'm having fits finding a bow grip that truly fits my odd shaped paw! I had the same issue with big bore revolvers, back in the day, but that was the other hand and it was simple to get a big block inlet to the handgun and I'd whittle on it to fit.

Not the same with a bow!   :knothead:

Kirk has impressed me with his "data driven" approach to seeing my way of holding and shooting a bow, in pics and vids, tracings, etc.

It'll likely not be the gorgeous looker like your risers, cause finances won't allow much splurging, but I'm confident it will be center stage in the SHOOTING department!

Dave..

I hear your "no splurging" sentiment loud and clear.

This bow is a pretty major splurge for me..no doubt about it.

This is my first truly made to spec bow.
I'm not one of the 3+ new bows a year to try guys....though how cool it would be!

Like a lot of us here, I'm just looking for that ONE bow. I did a lot of looking around before deciding on a sas LB.

I came to the decision to sell a couple guns to be able to afford this bow done the way I really wanted it.

I have faith this bow can be the ONE.

I just didn't like the thought of always wishing I had done it differently...so I went for it.

Of course we all have our limits and this bow was above mine so I had to make some sacrifices and sell some other toys.

...but let's face it..that critter won't care what kind of veneers or color glass spits that arrow at em.

Kirk is in a class by himself.

He has a relentless drive to do what's best as a bowyer and to educate and elevate the customer to a happy place, that is self evident!

I keep finding things to sell, too, John, but with my work having vaporized, I have to hold onto some items for survival sale.

I keep telling myself what few other bows I have will go on the block once this one makes love to my hand... but yeah...there will be some tough months of hard choices ahead on things above basic design issues!

What a delightful delemma!

No discussion of worldy nuances. Pardon the distraction otherwise...

My dear dad can't see very well anymore, but if he could see that grain swirl, as a past cabinet maker who taught me to love grain in wood, he'd just break down and weep!

That is excruciatingly beautiful! Even without the inset half moon.. that is totally STUNNING!

The bit of color just brings it 'alive!'

Infreakincredible!

Ok here's Thom's large economy sized grip.   She's 5.5" in circumference in the deepest part of the grip with a medium/ high wrist angle. The ol' boy has got some mitts on him!

Thom... i studied your video and watched your thumb location closely. you've got a good 45 degree wrist rotation.  if this thing don't fit you to a Tee I'll eat my hat with no salt.

I might have to cover my arrows in calf hair, cause I don't want to cover any of that up with a shelf or side plate!

I love the color of the yew on the side profile.

John, you're 100% right. Kirk did catch some amazing bocote swirls in that fang!!!

Last I heard it was 67# at 32" on a 60" bow! Kirk was going to trim it down to around 56@32.

I'm 6'4", 210 lean pounds, I can't find sleeves long enough, or gloves or hats that will fit. My biggest reason for ordering a custom bow was to find a grip big enough to wrap my hands around.

I don't want another longbow that feels like a martini glass!

I always run a leather grip, and some sort of shelf and side plate. Have you figured out anything for this??? I just can't get myself to consider covering up any of that magic.

Maybe I need a second bow...

Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: Zradix on March 28, 2012, 12:41:00 AM
I normally use a bare wood grip.
I've used a little felt on the grip a couple times but have always ended up removing it.

I have always used a bear brand carpet type rest with some felt up the window.
Just to keep that dreaded "tonk" noise away when "the magic minute" finally comes.

I did get a martin carpet rest for this bow.
Seems very similar except it's black.

The bear hair is tan..not sure what will look better.

Sure am thinking about the minimalist approach...

.....at this moment I'm thinking I'll need to bring a blanket with me into the woods to lay my bow on when I take my nap....

I don't think I even have a nice enough wall in my house to hang mine on.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: Zradix on March 28, 2012, 12:44:00 AM
...but I have been playing around tonight with homemade and store bought stains trying to figure out what my arrows are going to look like.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on March 28, 2012, 01:02:00 AM
I was thinking brown beaver tail for everything, now I'm thinking i should leave the grip alone and just start with calf hair for both.

For arrows, I've got a pig hunt coming up quick, I'm gonna run some aluminums for that one.

I'm thinking I might try black walnut footed douglas fir shafts after that. It's a pain that I can't get any wood shaft long enough or me without footing 6-8" of hardwood on the end.
Thom
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: Zradix on March 28, 2012, 01:09:00 AM
That extra 1.5" you need is a bummer.

Never heard of a big and tall shop for shafts.

Doesn't help keep the price down either..   "[dntthnk]"

Footed shafts are very cool though!
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on March 28, 2012, 01:16:00 AM
Right, but as long as you are footing you may as well put a bunch on the end and make spining arrows easier on yourself! I suspect this bow will be too much for my garden stake/bamboo arrows  :)

I've got a few contacts I'll be reaching out too after my pig hunt!

That explains the buzz i was feeling. at 7.5" she smoothed out nicely.

Pete,

Not to sound prophetic but your comment about "sisters" and "owning" caught my brain.

Here all this time, I thought the best a man could do with one, let alone "sisters" was to rent or borrow them...we never "own!"

This has been incredible! Going to really put the pressure on me the next few months to start saving a few more shekels and start chewing on some decisions...  :)

Amazing to watch these 3 bows emerge from imagination to reality!

Such beauty and then precsion to boot out of wood and glue and glass! Totally freakin amazing!

Pete,
The way your riser has that "burly" look at the front of the grip and flying V going up the back right side of the grip is just sweet!

Actually I was thinking about just that today. I was leaning more towards checkering with a design inside of it.

Waiting to see what the tips and flush limb bolt mounts will look like, Iam leaving that up to Kirks immagination, iam sure  they will be awsome.
I have to agree with you John there is some very nice grain in that riser.
Go for it Thom stippling would look fantastic and not cover anything up.

Post by: sticksnstones on March 28, 2012, 11:05:00 PM
Thanks for the offer Dave! Hopefully we have a chance to get together sometime and you can check out that grip.

For the checkering I was kinda thinking something more    LIKE THIS (http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=115072;p=1#000007)  with the bocote being left smooth and as design being worked into the zebra portion... If I only had something as easy as "The Scream" or Ms Sexy Legs" I'd know what to checker in like that elk antler.  :)

So my call from Kirk was really awesome. Going all the way back to October last year, I originally I'd asked for a Yeti at 65# @ 31.5". Kirk and I talked about my form, his bow design, etc and he thought 55# would be the sweet spot. I put 65# out of my mind and accepted that instead of a bow 5# heavier, I was going to get a bow 5# lighter and trust by the nature of it's design it would make that back up.

Remember when Kirk said my limbs weighed in at 67# when it first went up on the tree? Well after some balancing and tillering, and a little bit of smoothing it looks like I'm still going to be much closer to my original request than what it says on my current order sheet! Calculating for the 60" Sasquatch and materials used 65# was quite possible after all.

I don't know if anyone else will be able to wrap their hands around this bow or pull it back to anchor, but it's turning into exactly the bow I imagined!

Thanks Kirk, our phone call made my day!

Nice! Here is the one of Pete's bow I was looking forward too seeing:

Great size and shape on those tips, and that ebony is a very nice touch! Looks like she's almost done, and she's looking good! Hope you can bring home some bacon with it!

Just to amuse the folks watching, here is what I've been thinking about strings as I've been watching this come together.
- was thinking 8190, but I think I'm going to stay D97 for a while.
- was thinking 10 strands, now with the extra poundage I'm thinking 12 to be safe.
- black/yellow seems like a good combo.
- padding loops with red to matchup with the bloodwood accents.
- I think one red strand per bundle would be a nice splash.
Still don't know about center serving. I was thinking red or yellow #4 but both might be too bright. I'll decide when my first string is on the bow, guessing it will be black/white braided helo.

After my last post I dug to the back of the arrow stash and found a dozen 2317s that were way too stiff for a previous bow. Most of the shafts don't even have inserts in them yet. If dropping tip weight won't get me there on the 2117s I've got a backup plan ready to go!

Thom what ever you decide it will look good on your bow. Iam going to go with a 10 strand d97 brown and black .030 halo padded to 14.
Kirk was saying if all goes well he should have the bows shipped in a couple of days.
Thanks for the comment on tips, I like the ebony touch also, looking forward to seeing what Kirk has in store for the flush mount limb bolts.
That will really dress up the Ugly Duckling   :D
or as Kirk would say "ugly duckling me arse"

If Kirk says you can grease it in Sasquatch snot and it will stay put, I believe him and that is why I'm investing in one of his bows at a time when I might have to sell a few other toys to "git er done", but I want a truly custom bow that fits my hand!

Those are some spectacular bows guys!

I'm liking the tips Pete!
What are your cores Pete?..they look cool.

What are your tips Thom?
I love the way the grain just waves its way down one limb, through the riser, and right down the other limb.
Almost gives the illusion of a "snakey" self bow.

Man that is GREAT!!!

I love those little red/black tips, and the mini zebra overlay. That looks awesome!

I have never seen anything quite like it, has anyone??? Looks like something completely original to me.

Hey John, I've got no idea what my tip overlays will be. When the heavier limbs were a go, I decided I wanted something performance oriented out on the tips. It's up to Kirk at this point, I suspect some sort of phelonic and maybe some sort of accent.

He'll probably post the pictures here so we'll all find out at the same time  :)

Just so Kirk didn't make that red with his wife's lipstick, cause it's gonna rub off on yer hand then, John... and depending where ya put yer hand next...if'n yer married, ya might be in deep doo depending on where the "transfer" lands!

Oh...this is going to soo hurt when it comes time to make choices... was shooting for a purely FUNCTIONAL bow... good thing at my age that in a few weeks, I forget most stuff!  "[dntthnk]"

Yeah Doc, I ordered black glass over bamboo originally... You can see how that turned out for me

A long wait time to think about it ain't gonna do you any favors for the "purely functional" plan, neither is watching this thread too close!

In all seriousness, I think this thread is great not just for showing off a few bows, but also for understanding the options on Kirk's bows and just what goes into building a bow in general. I think there is a good reason there is more than just three of us following it!

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Thom,

Some time back, Kirk posted up pics of his varied riser designs...after he and I initially talked. OMG! I saved them all in a special folder.

Many, many bowyers will work with their customers to give them the best visual and heart throb bow they want.

What I find talking with Kirk is that he's always testing his beliefs, filming, evaluating and pushing the envelope to find out what REALLY works well and what is pure speculation.

I like that.  My goal is to get a riser that when I pick it up, fits my goofy paw in ONE way...the RIGHT way... and forces me to exert pressures as they're supposed to be.

The bows I've had and "tried" allow so much variance shot-to-shot, I suck!

I so envy these guys who pick up any bow, high, medium, low or broomhandle and shoot it wonderfully. I ain't them!

I mentioned my Dad's influence... being he was a cabinet maker, he taught me to love wood's natural grain beauty! Swirl, figure, etc. make me swoon!

But... form follows function and funds drive choices. I will err in building versatility into my bow and fit, before all the beauty.

I can always swoon over OTHERS' bows like you guys!  :)

It'll be a 'while' before I have to make all the choices... folks interested in all fine work better plunk down cash... once the word gets out about not only the beauty of these puppies, but the enhanced performance and the true "CUSTOM" -fit and finish--thru the ability to make it be what the customer WANTs, not simply an ala carte cosmetic choice "custom" ---the "wait" will GO UP!

Congrats to all 3 of you for some pretty bows.

I want to see more of that "sexy legs". I think if it looks too good, that would distract me in the woods!  :)

Wow, those are 3 amazing looking bows!!!

I just keep looking at that grip that is big enough, on a bow that is short enough, with a backbone powerful enough... This will get the job done, and it looks like that too boot!!!

I feel like the luckiest guy in the world, but I bet there are two other guys feel the same way!

Those limb tips look great! I do love the way they tie back to the bloodwood radius. Have you ever had to carve out such an extreme angle for the string angle at draw?

Wow I can't stop looking at the bunch of them, that is quite the herd!!!!!

This is a better way to start the day than with coffee, but since I don't have to choose... Cheers     :coffee:

Kirk where do you get those huge slabs of lumber?  I assume you'd cut and season most of it yourself, which I am sure is chore.  Down here in the south all we got is pine, oak, and sweetgum trees... so not a lot of bow making wood.

I did see a self bow made of dogwood that was nice, speckled with good grain. But most of that is just white down here. I had even thought of persimmon, but the idea of cutting down a persimmon tree in my woods kinda hurts my feelings.

Speaking of a reunion, I've got Comptons blocked on my calendar already so I should be there too! That'll be at least two out of three. How about you Doc?

Congrats Ron, I watched that thread and you've got a great looking bow on the way!

I hadn't noticed this thread until today.  I just spent well more than an hour going through all of it. I also looked at several of the videos.

You fellows are getting terrific looking bows!  I had no idea building a bow was so complicated. Putting those limbs together was wild.

Now I'm thinking I should put more thought in the bow Kirk will build for me in July to make sure I get the most out of the custom work he does. On the other hand, I might be well served to just green-light Kirk to build me the bow of HIS dreams, given his great taste?

Kirk, I hope you won't mind saving a spot on the bow for a Bear Compass?  I have a couple of spares looking for a home.

I'm especially excited about the prospects of having a bow built that allows me, with my 26" draw, to get top performance usually reserved for the long-draw guys. I also like the idea of having a grip built that helps me set the bow hand perfectly every time.

Thanks for sharing all this.

Bowild:You fellows are getting terrific looking bows! I had no idea building a bow was so complicated. Putting those limbs together was wild.

Kirk is only showing the sanatized version. Not going into the hours of selecting , grinding and cutting laminations,. wedges and power lams ect. There truly is a lot more work than people appreciate. Especially when the bowyer selects and processes his wood and materials from scratch. Not to mention finding and buying wood. Hours and hours go into this on top of what you are seeing.

God bless you all,
Steve

Kirk gave me a piece of that wood. I built a bow with the clear piece and man it was beautifu.
Really wild curley maple. I still have a piece of it that is full of bullets. I may build a bow out of it someday for a novelty bow.

God bless you all, Steve

Yup... western curly maple. i took on several projects harvesting and curing out my own wood and I'll tell you this.... i know why they charge so much for the stuff now. from cutting slabs to a bow riser took about 4-5 months. Getting the stuff from a green moisture content level of about 29-32% to below 20% with out loosing half of it is the tough part.....Fans and lights running constantly for 3 months.... i don't have much time for that stuff anymore.

Hey Rat, I'll be at Hog Heaven that weekend so I'll miss the 3D shoot.  I will be at the range pretty much every M,W,F from 6pm til close when I don't have work conflicts. Ping me if you want to be sure I'll be there. This will be my only bow so it'll be a sure thing I'll have it with me if I'm there

Watching stain dry I assume... I wonder if that means there is a chance at a few more teaser pics to get posted this weekend

I've given up on shooting other guys bows unless the bowyer says it's good. Just not worth trying to short draw and having muscle memory kick in. Just not worth it.

Are we all getting the amber treatment?

I asked for it.

What type of final finish are you guys getting?
I went with the flat/ non-glare textured.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: sticksnstones on April 01, 2012, 10:23:00 AM
I think the zebra/amber example I saw looked spectacular and let Kirk know that. I also let him know if he saw something else in the grain and colors that lead him to think there was a better choice to run with it.

As for finish, I did not want a gloss since this will be my hunting bow first and foremost. OTOH I didn't want it so dull you couldn't see those veneers! Kirk suggested a process for a "satin" finish that should keep most of the grain pop without turning it into a signalling mirror.

It'll be funny if Pete got the high gloss!

I was thinking of one other thing; I think every bow has gone through at least one change during this build process:
John - radius to flair riser cut
Pete - flush limb bolts
Thom - +7#

I got to wondering, think this many changes is normal, or is it because we are the lucky ones who got to see these coming together at each step in the process?

Little side project today. Since I've been giving away my bow stringers with the bows I've been selling, I'm now out of longbow stringers. I've been wanting to make my own for a while now combining the best attributes of the different brand ones I've been using. This is just two little pieces of deer leather and some para cord, but if it can tiller my 100# selfbow and fits the tips on the Sasquatch right, it will be my new stringer for this bow!

I never really discussed finish with Kirk, but he knows that this bow will be hunted with so I am guessing he will go with a satin finish.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: Zradix on April 01, 2012, 10:24:00 PM
I got looking into some email swaps Kirk and I had.

I guess I did end up going with some type of low glare textured.

I guess he has one "more flat" option that looks more like a hand rubbed oil finish that doesn't really add any depth to the grain.

At first that flat finish sounded the best...then as things went on and veneers were added etc I didn't want to use a finish that didn't highlight the grain.

So I did end up with the next step up from that in "glossyness".

I'm not sure what it's called but basically left it as a finish that has texture, adds depth, and has low glare.

I think we're all pretty darn lucky here.

I know one thing,...My bow went through...well lets just say a "few" changes before the build was started.

I felt bad every time I made a change, but Kirk took it all in stride.

My problem is I jumped the gun to get on the list before the wait times got longer and didn't take the time to totally think through..or even know enough to ask about all the options.

Heck, I didn't even realize that having a flair back on a one piece WAS an option until Kirk sent me a pic with proposed profile showing the flaired look....darn happy he did.

Honestly, ( and I feel a bit embarrassed saying this ) if Kirk has more than the occasional customer like myself, I really don't know how he survives keeping all this stuff straight by himself.

Pete, I'm sure this is the first time this has happened to any bowyer or any bow... OK, not really. If I've got any bead on Kirk, you'll have no idea where those spots were and it won't effect performance at all. I'm surprised he was so up front about what happened on the bench.

Hey Rick! Yes, at 60" this will be the longest bow at Camp (H)Ambush this year  :)  I'll do my best to get around the swamps with this as my handicap    :biglaugh:

The one piece is a 62" Sasquatch Long bow.
It might get shortened to 60" to make it perfect.

It's 46.2# at 29.25".
The riser is bocote with blood wood and black glass "pin stripes" with a zebrawood fang footing.

The limbs are walnut cored with bocote veneers.

Tips are bloodwood, black glass, & bubinga.

Brutha Yohon.... Actually, that's what my plan is.   ;)   I can think of a certain group of guys that have no respect for shooting off the stakes and think nothing of shooting 50-70 yards at Baltimore. i thought it might be fun to have a set up i could actually hit the target at those ranges with.

Hopefully I'll have time to get er done. i got a lot of irons in the fire right now.   :D

I'd normally be very anxious about having a bow in the mail, but I've got so much to do to get ready for it I've hardly noticed so far!

Done list:
- all bare shafts lined up by spine and length.
- field tips from 100 - 250 organized.
- fletched a dozen shafts, ready to cut down.
- ordered a new color of D97 and serving.
- setup string jig and stretcher

To Do:
- No Sno all the new arrows.
- get out sharpening stuff, get ready to dress up broadheads.
- be ready to call in sick Friday if it doesn't show up tomorrow    :bigsmyl:
- oh and charge up my camera so I can take some more pictures for you guys

I can't wait to see what shaft/tip combos work on this rig!!!

For you guys that ever get a wild hair to try something different.... DON'T try running aluminum through a band saw with a bi-metal blade.   "[dntthnk]"    too many rpms....     I gotta go to plan "B" on roughing this out.

Pete's is on it's way home today.... and i may even get yours shipped out today too John...

Hey Pete, looks like it was 4:57 on Monday. I didn't think it would get to the Mulino PO until yesterday, so it wouldn't get here til Thurs/Fri. I guess Kirk made the shipping cutoff and USPS was right on top of it!

Want to see the video of me cutting open the beat up box with my hands shaking? I figured I should shoot the video in case we had broken stuff inside. If it would make you nervous I can keep it for my archives.

Doc, I poked some fun at him about building a Hill bow a while back and the next thing I saw was some pics of a "Boot Hill" in my email! Let me know when you see the ILF rig

For those that have just seen a Squatch in action for the first time you can see why I have been reccomending these bows. They are the real deal. Super quiet even without any silencers or special tuning. Great look and blazing fast. I don't know what the speed is on that bow of Sidekicks but I would bet it is faster than most fast recurves. BTW, I have some pics of Kirks new bow testing machine and it is just pretty neat.

The bow being tested on it was right at a triple digit mark and hitting the exact same number every shot. That says a bunch about a bow and also about the testing equipment.
Congratulations to you all that got one of these and to those that have them coming.

God bless you all, Steve

Wow, after 157 shots I'm close to speechless.

I took it to the range tonight and it got the close up inspection by a bunch of archers. Everyone was very impressed with the looks of the bow, and how incredibly even and smooth the draw is. All of them are 30" draw or less, so looking at the DFC chart I knew they'd say that.

One veteran did really look hard at the string groove vs limb contact of the string but he thought it would pass for "longbow only" events.

I started shooting it and my guess arrow setup was hitting close to center, and my pulled shots were equally high/low and left/right. My very first night I shot it better with it than the recurve I've been shooting for a year.

Kirk, that grip is PERFECT! THANK YOU! I can't believe you did that without me standing in your shop and talking grips for a day or two!

The D10 10 strand SBD string is great, I'm so glad I have one. I think I'll do up a pair of D97s tomorrow with 10 strands each and the center serving more to my tastes, but I might need to look at some newer materials. That SBD is nice and small, and it didn't creep a 64th all night. Great testament to the material and the string maker!

That's all I can rattle off for tonight, but a review, pictures, video will be coming soon!

So much for discretion Brutha Steve.

I think i better explain a bit about my testing on these things before just randomly posting numbers.

I'm very close to having a state of the art professional testing system built, but the computer interface is still in progress.

For now I'm using a Hooter Shooter with an infared light kit, and testing these bows using random weight arrows between 8.5 -10 GPP at these guys particular draw lengths.

I've done the DFC charts for you guys taking the measurements with a digital scale as accurately as possible. and if you choose to share them on line i can post them for you, or you can.

But please keep something in mind here. The chronograph readings shooting with fingers will always vary from one archer to the next depending on their shooting style and arrow weights. And 3 identical bows may have slightly different speeds depending on the woods used in the limbs, backing of glass or carbon, and the draw length they are tested at.

here's my testing machine without the computer interface set up.

When i have my full testing facility up and running this will be much more accurate than it is now.

Well as long as this is all in the open. Here is an example of some of the data collected by the contraption:

I also have a spreadsheet with all the raw data. Stuff like: the draw weight at each inch out to the second decimal place, stored energy, kinetic energy, arrow specs for test, bow details at test, etc, etc. Thanks for the sneak peak at the rig and you testing my bow. It was great to observe your testing environment and procedure.

This is all cool and everything for my engineer brain, but this bow also passed my cave man test last night which is actually FAR more important to me as a hunter:
Pick up the bow, feels good in the hand.
Shoot an arrow, it goes where you point.
Go get arrow, find it buried deep in the target.

Science is fun stuff, Thom, and I like that the builder knows his science behind his choices.

But the real proof is in the pudding and that is how it fits one's paw and how it behaves when put thru it's paces.

You can't "TUNE" in what isn't in the scope of the bow to provide... well, maybe you can get a perfectly tuned arrow, but you're going to sacrifice a lot if there are inherent design flaws in the bow/limbs combo.

And that is MY cave man assesment!

Sounds like we pretty much see it the same way!

BTW I talked to Kirk earlier and we went through a few points in detail. I was quite surprised how much thought and testing went into a few things that I thought were very minor. He is the man with a plan! (And some templates, and quality materials, and a scary chainsaw and die grinder....)

Really want to play hookie today and go stumping! Looking forward to hearing from Pete, maybe tomorrow!

I rebuilt my bow stringer today, the tips are very fine and I made my boots too big originally. Stringer rebuilt and a little extra leather project done too.

I was looking at big black rest and side plate on my riser, then I flipped it over and looked at the tracks Kirk put on the other side.

Then I thought, why not put a set of tracks on the arrow side?

Might check for some leather with a little more red hue to it, this was the best I had in my scrap drawer tonight. Maybe brown beaver tail??? We'll see what strikes my fancy when this one wears out.

Thanks Kirk! I can't work with wood like you or Mike, but leather and strings I do enjoy! Speaking of, I like these tips even better that the last ones. Very well done, that bottom picture is fantastic.

Doc, that seal is very tough to come buy these days. It's easier for me to focus on trial/failure with readily available and cheap materials than to hunt for exotic stuff.

I'm gonna take my bow down for it's sock so I can drive it to my trad shop today and look at a new padded case for it to go to and from the range assembled but unstrung.  Maybe I'll have another picture or two to post before this pig trip.

On deck, OH YEAH. After slobbering over my keyboard the last week with this thread very excited I am on deck.

Been playing with all sorts of options on the order in my brain. Order is for a 60" TD Sasquatch longbow 52@29.5 cut 1/16 past center.. Bocote, my favorite wood, riser with radius accents for sure as Kirk had sent pics of a block he had in stock as a teaser and had him tag it for me and placed the order.

Other options considering; custom grip, black glass, veneers or single carbon back, i-beam, limb core material. Any suggestions guys?

Hope all the new ones find there way home soon and everyone enjoys. Love the tracks on the riser Thom.

Wow Pete, I'm bummed to hear that. Hopefully tomorrow!

I did buy a case for this today, the Neet strung recurve case was the best fit in the shop but it isn't 100% to my liking. Making a case will have to wait until after my pig trip!

Got home from the trad shop, my yellow D97 was in my mailbox, so now I've got a chore for tonight! I like this SBD D10, but I really like making my own for exactly the bow it will be used on.

Did another 150 shots tonight including a bunch of broadhead tests. I'm going to run those Zwickey Delta 170 grain heads for this pig hunt. The arrow was stable with them from 5-25 yards and poking through the back of the target on every test shot! Total arrow weight is 650 grains, this puts me around 11gpp. I tried a setup at 10gpp with a 125 up front but I wasn't getting the same penetration. Big news from tonight, I decided I'm only taking this bow on my hunt. I'm not even packing my recurve as a backup.

Last news from today is a tiny bit less than awesome, that buckskin was a little too soft and it got pretty tore up at the range tonight. It was slick enough and dead quiet, so that was good. I'm going to print a real template and put a little toothpick under it and try again. I've slated two more hours of range time tomorrow so I better get to working on these leather pieces and twisting up a new string!

Can you believe there are 500 posts on this thread already?

Will do on the walnut iohkus. Had not heard much about it as a core wood. Was also leaning towards bamboo.

Any one have thoughts on the G-10 I-beam?

I feel your pain guys, waiting for delivery seems to take forever. But I am sure it will be well worth the wait looking at the pics, drool drool.
Title: Re: The blocks to BIG FOOT bow transformation has begun!
Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on April 07, 2012, 01:57:00 AM
The walnut is a bit lighter weight than bamboo which makes the bow a tad bit quicker. i think you'd be hard pressed feeling the difference between the two in draw smoothness..... but... some guys just love bamboo. i build most all my stock bows with it.

In your case Gery, with a bocote footed riser. riser flex shouldn't be an issue at 52 pounds, so the G-10 isn't really necessary..... but it adds mass weight to the riser, and looks kinda cool.     ...

Please let me know soon if you want a change made. We need to start swapping some email here.

HEY GERY I HAVE TWO OF KIRKS BOWS ONE WITH SINGLE CARBON AND ZEBRA WOOD CORES AND THE OTHER IS TRIPLE CARBON WITH FOAM CORES.BOTH SHOT GREAT AND I DONT THINK YOU WILL GO WRONG WITH EITHER CORE YOUR THINKING ABOUT. FOAM IS A OPTION AND WILL LIGHTEN THE WEIGHT IN THE LIMBS AND IS VERY DURABLE, JUST ANOTHER THOUGH. GOOD LUCK WITH THE NEW TOY.      :bigsmyl:

WOW IT GOT REALLY LOUD IN HERE!!!

I had to redo those leather tracks, couldn't help myself. Two hours of splitting bamboo, sanding, cutting and shaving leather, etc, I finally came out with this
  (http://thomjorgensen.com/Sasquatch/new%20tracks.JPG)

They look less like tracks than the last set, but it's even slicker and the point of contact for the arrow is insanely small! Coffee break, then I gotta get twisting some fast flight!

Of course I like the looks of Kirk's bows (I'm a recurve fan).  But I was drawn to get on the build list by Kirk's specialty for building to my draw length. I am more than a little intrigued with the possibility of maximizing performance in this bow. I'm hoping to have a bow that feels like mid to high 40's but shoots like a low to mid-50# draw weight? It appears I'll be going with 3X Carbon and Foam cores.

Because I love fancy woods I'll be wanting exotic veneers on at least the bow back and maybe black glass on the face or belly. I don't know (I'll take Kirk's advice) if the I or G Beams will be necessary for my bow. It will be around 48#@26" so maybe not?

The toughest choices for me are going to be the exotic woods (Macassar or White ebony for the riser?)and the limb bolt system (hidden, sunken, or standard? On the other hand, I have bows with myrtle limb veneers and plenty with macassar or cocobolo in the risers. I might want this bow to be completely different from what I have.

I love the narrow grip throat on one of the bows featured in this build thread.

This is my favorite thread since I've been on Trad Gang and I've never even seen a Sasquatch bow except in pictures!

Almost 3 hours to build that string! Wow I'm slow! I went with 10 strands of D97 with loops padded to 14 as I planned:
Bundle 1 = 4 black/1 red, padding is 2 red
Bundle 2= 4 yellow/1 red, padding is 1yellow/1 red
Serving = yellow #4, same for the tied nock point

I snapped this after finishing the first loop:

Hey Thom.... give that fancy string a few more twists bro, If you get that string off the back of the limb, it takes the buzz out of it.

Glad to here she made it Pete.       If old butter fingers here wouldn't have dinged up the finis you'd have had it sooner.

Owlbait, Not with the horizontal stability that these bows have bro. They don't even need string grooves./ You can't twist one of those limbs.

Thom, I gotta have a string like that for my own bow bro.

Wow, I missed a bunch of good stuff after I took off this afternoon!!!

Pete, I'm so glad your bow made it! Best of luck on your hunt! We need some pics when you get back!

Steve, John, Pete; glad you guys like the string too. This is absolutely my favorite string of all of the ones I've made to date. The strand recipe is up there Steve, have at it!

Kirk, I took the limb profile pic before I even measured brace or center served the string. It was down at 7" at that time. I looked at it braced at 7.75 and 8.0, but it doesn't look that much different than 7.5. 7.5 is the only height I've actually shot it at so far, I may creep it up just a touch from here.

Just taking my time getting to know the bow, learning her ins and outs. Next time I'm going to use my 59" AMO peg so it won't take so many twists to hit the right brace height. I've got 50 shots on this string now and zero creep, time to install the silencers and start resting my shoulder for Monday!

Thom,
Maybe you can't see the difference between a 7" brace and 7.5" on it, but i sure can... 7.5" is fine bro.

Come on Steve... Don't go over board here. You can twist these  glass limb bows if you reef on them.
Now the carbon backed limbs like you have on yours definitely have more torsional stability.

btw... old Mike G owlbait here is just casting his fly upon the waters here, and i ain't rising to the bait. Never could understand why some guys just love to stir the pot so much. but i guess you get used to it after while. don't go for it Steve. it ain't worth taking too serious.

btw... i got your ebony and Bocote ready to ship Monday...

Man i about spit coffee on my screen on the "Put the bunny down" line.             too funny.

Good luck on your hunt Pete!  Go get that Talon all bloody bro! You'll have a clean one to play with when you get home.

Oh I did see a big difference between 7.0 and 7.5 inches! I was trying to say I couldn't see much change between 7.5 and my longer checks at 7.75 and 8.0 inches. Sitting at 7 5/8ths now, that's where I'll shoot it Monday night.

One thing I noticed is this thing is very forgiving of spine, I don't know if it's this exact bow or this design in general. I've done test shooting with shafts varying 3" in length, and tips varying 50 grains. I don't think there was any combo I was disappointed with. The longest/heaviest combo did hit a bit low at first, but the penetration was incredible! 34" to BOP, 175 grain up front, 645 total grain weight, coming in around 10.5 gpp.

Looking forward to hearing these other guys escapades!

While John is off winning the lottery, here is an old PM from last fall that I sent to some guy who stared a thread about looking for a hybrid bow:

"Kirk at Big Foot Bows has an interesting story. You might want to give him a call before he gets too busy.
Thom"

"Thanks for the heads up on these bows. I've seen the ads here and there in the forums but never clicked on them. After, looking at the site and seeing some good pics of the bows they grew on me quick! Looks like a lot of out of the box thinking. I like that. Thanks again for finally getting me to take a good look.
John Kelley"

How cool is that?

Out of the box thinking. I have seen a few people try to stick KIrk in that boxd. He Is like me , We don't fit. Kirk does not take anything as being set in stone until he proves or disproves it for himself. We are both old carpenters and understand that there is almost always a way. Its just a matter of figuering it all out.

I'm sorry...

That's a cool vid Thom.
...those limbs do move for you..lol

It is cool and fun how you were there from the very beginning until now on this build..to the point of being built at the same time using some of the same pieces of wood.

It might be a week or two before I get to really put the bow through it's paces.

Thom..that bow looks dang serious when you pull it back man...like a cobra ready to strike.

Hey John, sorry if I put you on the spot. Hopefully everything gets ironed out and you get back to shooting soon!!!

I love the banter at the wheelie shop with the guy putting up his crossbow. He's talking about it being too loud to hunt more than 25 yards while I'm shooting from the 22 yard line and the loudest thing you hear is the arrows hitting the target down range    :bigsmyl:

Howdy guys, I just got back and I didn't get a shot off this weekend. I did however shoot up the targets in camp quite a bit and I'm REALLY loving this bow!!! I may have some short stories, pics, or videos to add later, I'll put a link here if appropriate.

I did put a few surface scratches in the finish on this trip, now I don't have to worry about it being too perfect any more. Personally I don't think it detracts from it's beauty, and everyone that knows me will also know where my bows will go pursuing game.

Next up for me, I'm going to change out my broadhead setup and resume the fine tuning on my arrows. Also I'm not completely happy with my side quiver so I think I'm going to mount my Slim Jim angle quiver on this for a week or two and see how it shoots with the limb bolt attachment system.

In the meantime I gotta get on with the second half of my vacation! I'll check in with you guys as I can, but less than my usual several times per day.

Gotta dig up this old thread tonight. My bow is almost a month old now, and tonight the warranty was voided. I won't go into all the details but it was dry fired from a 28" draw, and that was a horrible thing to hear and see.

Afterward I took it apart and all but put it under a microscope, and I can't see anything wrong with it. I checked the string out and started shooting it adding an inch of draw at a time until I was back to 32". Shot a few dozen shots there with the arrows flying straight and true, and hitting with authority. I believe my bow to be 100% OK, but it will take some time to fully regain confidence.

Kirk, I post this here as a deep felt and sincere thank you for all of your work in this design, using top shelf materials, and all of your care in crafting this bow. Thank you!

Hey Thom,

These things will typically take some dry fires without damage, but it's awful dad burn tough on them.

Check out the riser very carefully too. Believe it or not, it's sometimes harder on the riser than it is the limbs. If you see any separation along the accent lines or even the finish, please contact me and discontinue shooting it immediately & We'll get another riser built for you.

Dry fires are tough on any bow. I hope your's is ok. My Big Foot is a true testimate to how tough and well built they are. I won't go into the details, but this bow was in an accident that very bows would have even survived, much less still be functional, and shoot as good as it ever did.

Thats good to know that these bows are tough,  I hate handing my bow for someone to look at,  I have learned not to be shy about saying ,  DONT draw that back without an arrow in it!   My Brother in law dry fired one of mine by accident and he has been shooting for 30 years, so it can happen to anyone

Thanks for chiming in Kirk. Everything looks great so far, but I didn't peel up the felt pads. Should I do that tonight? (If I do, barge cement to put it back down?)

As I was going over it last night under a bright light, I just kept replaying that phone conversation we had about adhesives. I remember you talking about how at this draw length and weight you were going to run with the very toughest adhesive at each glue point even though it would take longer to dry, etc. These thoughts were what prompted the posting above. I promise to do all I can to ensure we don't have a redo on this little situation.

Another piece of good news, I guess I build a string that is tough and not just pretty!

I think we are good here Kirk. I peeled up the felt and it all looks great. I checked the dark grains really close and I don't see anything wrong anywhere. I put the bow back together and shot 50 full draw shots and this monster is still dialed in.

I'll let you focus on getting your next bunch of bows out to the anxious hands of the new owners!
