Title: First time bowfishing today.
Post by: Scott357 on March 14, 2012, 05:35:00 PM
I got one. My first trad kill.

I shot at 7 carp but only connected on one.

I wish I could think of some way to use the ones I kill. I guess the racoons are going to have a fish dinner tonight

Congrats, I will be heading out in the near future to try my luck as well.  I wouldn't worry too much about the fish.  One way or the other, they won't go to waste.  If you have a garden or flowers you could bury them for fertilizer?  If you trap, freeze them for bait?  Just some suggestions.

I am going to put a garden in here in a week or 2 so I'll be bringing them home for fertilizer.

I guess it doesnt hurt to thin a few invasive fish out either,

Being a chef and all I decided I'd cook up some carp. I thought the chinese prize carp so why can't I cook it?  Well let me be the first to say Carp is better for fertilizer. It wasn't inedible but lots of work for little gain.  It has some white meat and dark, the dark stuff is nasty ewwwie it's nasty but the light stuff is ok.  I think the trick is to keep them in clear water for a few days before killing them....something that isn't possible if bowfishing.

take only the white shoulder meat,  cut into chunks and place in canning jars, add 1 tsp of salt per jar, no water, seal and can in hot water bath as you would vegetables. Tastes just like tuna fish.

Try to find grass carp (amur) they taste much better.
