Title: can not wait to bow fish this year!!!!!
Post by: adkmountainken on March 12, 2012, 08:05:00 AM
i have allways wanted to bow fish but there was always something holding me back. its is just me but i just could not bring myself to shoot something i would not use. i know most use carp for the garden or just throw out but i did not feel right about that. HOWEVER i have now switched my 3 Newfs to a raw food diet that is heavy on fish and i have an outlet ( and NEED ) for fresh carp!!!!! my good friend CylicRivers (Charlie) suprised me yesterday with a Bear 76'er that is PERFECT for bow fishing!!! thanks again bro!!! i am now counting the days until i can let loose on the water!!!!

I too feed my golden and malinos on a raw diet. I usually feed the cooked salmon and mackerel (fresh caught). I am waiting for better seas to do bow fishing for dolphin aka Mahi Mahi.

Ken - your Newfies will love you for that diet!  It does wonders for their coats, skin and the rest of the dog!

Tony, your not kidding man you should here them at dinner time, sounds like a pack of wolves! a bit expensive to use this diet for them but i think deer season and bow fishing should really keep the cost down!!!!

Your going to have a blast. Most of our water around where I live is murky and you can't see real well, but I still have a ball just going out at night with my bow in hand.

Ken - Get up with Charlie.....you two should be able to arrow a bunch of big carp.  Once summer is over, it's on to the bigger brown creatures.

If it's a good fall, I'll see what I can do to help out.

BTW - dried deer hearts and livers make a great dog treat......we call it "dog crack" down here!!  Just dry it outside!

Nothing better for big dogs than the BARF diet, and bowfishing, small game, and all other game sure helps with it. What a great reason to "have" to go shoot something. "Honey, I'm only doing it for my dogs!" Would love to get my NEO's on deer tracking but they don't travel well!

Owl bait you ain't kidding! my wife really does not like hunting but understands how important it is to me and does not say much. now she has asked me if i could shoot a few more deer!!! yes it is nice to have a "reason" to kill game.

Ken, Unfortunately the weather makes no difference when we can start here in NY.

For some reason, NYS won't let us shoot carp till May 15th every year.

An invasive species and they have a season...go figure!!!

Ive seen dogs on that diet and they look great. My dog is on a salmon diet and looks like a giant rope, you can see all of his musculature when he runs and I attribute some of that to his fish diet. Ive never fed him carp, he would hate me for that but with this weather all of my traditional bow fishing areas will be weeded up by the end of this month anyway. Usually doesnt happen til late April.    :dunno:

That always burns me   :banghead:  If this year keeps going like it is weather wise we will miss out on some good shooting.

Izzy,
now i was told to stay away from feeding them salmon, go figure! talked to many dog owners using the raw food diet ( barf or prediatary) and all said carp were fine scales and all. a few said salmon were okbut be carefull.

carp contain an enzyme that binds to vitamin B so limit feeding those beautiful dogs carp to a max of twice a week

I dont understand it either.  control the species but leave them alone during breeding season.  Honestly, I dont think its been thought about.

In other states I  know guys who shoot them all winter long. You can see videos of them doing it in WI.

I know guys who go out about this time of year at night and seem to get shooting in.  The fish will come to the surface water.

How do you feed them the fish?  I would be afraid they would choke on a bone or something.  I shoot a lot of carp every summer and do have a few folks that take them off my hands and eat them and can them... but I sometimes get more than they need. I have tried to prepare them as I used to go to a local reataurant where I went to high school and they  made an out of this world carp sandwich. I know, it sounds weird and I have never seen them in another restaurant since. I have never been able to duplicate that sandwich.  I can't even figure out how to debone the carp and make them palatable.  I would like to use them to enhance my dog's diet though.  I have two bird dogs and a great dane that I'm sure would love to have a seafood dinner occasionally!
Thanks

In Minnesota we have a "season" on carp also, starts May 1st. I believe the reason for not allowing carp shooting earlier is to protect spawning game fish. Northern pike spawn in areas where carp are found in the spring, shallow swampy areas and I would guess a lot of eggs would be destroyed by people shooting carp in these areas.

It is frustrating this time of the year to see so many carp in the shallows and not be able to shoot!
