Title: My New Eaglewing Talon 11 arrived... Thanks Sixby
Post by: pitt98 on March 11, 2012, 12:49:00 AM
I received my new Eaglewing Talon 11 in the mail today.  Full custom build, to my door, in less then 3 months!!!!!  I can't imagine dealing with a finer person then Steve.  His craftsmanship and attention to detail are second to none, and the fit is flawless.  I asked Steve to build me a bow that allowed the wood to speak for itself, and he didn't disappoint.
Details:

62" Eaglewing Talon 11 53#@28" Static Tip Recurve

Limbs:  Carbon backed, foam/carbon/foam core, and Chocolate Myrtle/clear glass belly.  Tips and butt accented with Koa overlays.

Riser:  Fiddleback Koa, with Goncalo Alves sight window, antler accents on belly.

Tips have phenolic, and backs of tips have antler overlays.  Also added antler limb bolts.

I can not wait to put a few arrows through her tomorrow.

That is very, very nice.  Incredible figure on that wood.
I would like to hear how it performs with the carbon and foam.

Did you take your pictures at Steak n Shake?  The floor looks familiar.   :)

Thanks everyone.

Finally got to shoot her today, and she absolutely performs as good as she looks.  The bow pulls as smooth as any bow I've ever shot.  I warmed up with my 55# Kwyk Styk, then took my first shot out of the Talon.  I was surprised how consistent my groups were with this bow right out of the gate, without any tuning whatsoever.

Personally, all of my bows usually end up tuned best at the higher spectrum of brace heights.  My widow PSA likes 8 3/4", my Kwyk Styk likes 7 3/4" to 8", and my RER arroyo likes 7 3/4".  This bow though?  Well, it's amazing what Steve has achieved with a forward handled recurve design.   My last group of the session was the best and most accurate of them all, and that was with a brace height of 6 3/4"!!!!

I was shooting the same arrows (2018's) from the 55# Kwyk Styk, as I was with this 53# talon.  They  flew like darts out of each, even though there is over an inch difference in brace height and 2#'s in weight between the two.  My draw is 28-28.25".

I can't wait to start fine tuning this bow.  To anyone who's on the fence about placing an order with Steve, jump down from the fence and give him a call, you won't regret it.

Here are a couple more pics of this bow that I took. I know its a cliche but pics really do not show how neat this wood is. It just ripples and glows like its alive.

the finish is like 30 coats of finish hand sanded every two coats and hand rubbed out after the last two coats. Usually I do this and then spray a coat of satin over it to kill the gloss for hunting bows but this is the gloss finish. Its kind of hard to get good pictures of because its really reflective.

God bless you all and thanks for the kind remarks. Steve

Wow!         Is this what the stuff you gave me is going to look like Steve? That is incredible material! just to look at the raw wood you would never guess how beautiful that stuff realy is.

I milled a few of those veneers tonight and sprayed a bit of clear on one to see the grain. Holy cow! it's like tuning on a light switch.

Congratulations on your new bow! that's top of the line right there.

Steve... what are the belly tip overlays. is that more of the Koa? or is it blond Myrtle wood?

What deaddoc didn't mention, was that the first arrow he shot from this bow went dead into the center bullseye of my rinehart 18:1.  It was actually the best shot either of us had all day, and it was his first through the bow.

It sure is.  If you get it in sun light and start moving it around, it's almost hypnotizing to look at.  The glow and depth of the wood is quite amazing.

As the bowyer, my take on this bow is that although it is not the fanciest bow I have ever built it just feels right and when you get it out in the sunlight it just comes alive. its like on fire. When you shoot it , it gets even better. This bow at 6 3/4 in brace is rock solid stable in every direction. The pre load is unreal and the draw curve is as close to perfect as a bow can get. There is a lot more to a bow than physical beauty and this bow has it all.
God is a great designer and He deserves all the credit . I was telling Kirk what a blessing it is that God hid this beauty in a tree and allows us to unlock it and look inside.

Kirk the tips are the same koas that your riser is made from. (http://eaglewingarchery.i8.com/images/jnkoa/jnkoa1.jpg)

God bless you all, Steve

Steve, I think this bow looks great.  I, for one, don't care for a lot of inlays and pierce points, etc.  Get a piece of wood with God given figure and be joyful.   I have a bow with birds eye maple limbs and it Looks like nothing much under indoor light but in sunlight, the eyes have it,
pardon the pun.

That sir can surely be arranged.

Beyond, I have some awsome birdseye veneers. I have been thinking about staining them but have not decides on a color yet. Thinking an emerald green might look good.

God bless you all, Steve

Well THAT did it! i gotta do something with it now. i think I've been sitting on it for two years now.

What have you got going for reinforcement in this riser Steve? did you slip a hidden i beam under that purdy wood somewhere? or is it in the accent strip alone?

Post by: Sixby on March 12, 2012, 10:20:00 PM
Kirk, I honestly don't remember. Been too long bro. Probably not an I beam in it. I used I beams in some and not in others. Honestly don't know. Sure it could use one . I don't care for any riser not having an I beam now.  Unless its heavy actionwood and I have even seen one or two of those develop cracks in the shelf area over time.
Phenolic I beam should be an industry standard IMHO.
God bless you, Steve

actually i was talking about THIS bow having an I-Beam.

Do you have any photos of the back and belly of this riser?....

Man this came out sweeeeet looking....It's almost as purdy as my paradox walnut Talon II, but of course i'm kinda partial to it.   :goldtooth:

Kirk,
Steve did use a phenolic I-beam in this riser.  There is a pic of the finished back and belly on page one, if that is what you are looking for.

I won't build a custom without it. The Hunter will have an eighth inch laid in sideways for the stripe but no I beam. I will only build it with actionwood. All the customs have a full depth I beam.

God bless you all, Steve

the black stripe in the end of the riser is the I beam. It is uncut 1/4in and runs uncut through the entire riser.

God bless you, steve
