Title: Need a Hat to Protect From Wind
Post by: WildmanSC on March 06, 2012, 11:25:00 AM
Moderators, please bear with me on this thread.  It really is traditional archery related.  I need help in identifying a hat to protect from wind, specifically protect the microphones on my new hearing aids as discussed below.

I just bought a new pair of Starkey Wi 110 Receiver in the Canal (RIC) hearing aids.  The problem I'm experiencing is that even with the HAs set for maximum reduction of wind noise a very breezy day still introduces a lot of noise.  I'm hoping there is someone that has experience with behind the ear (BTE)/RIC hearing aids that may have identified a hat that can be worn that provides protection from the wind for the microphones on the hearing aids.  The HAs provides great sound transmission, but the wind noise can over ride the sounds I need to hear, i.e., deer walking in the woods!  I want to be able to hunt with my Tall Tines T/D recurve this year, but to do so I must be able to eliminate, or minimize, the wind noise problem.

Take a look at the Plenty Coups hat.  If you look in the product reviews section, you can read about them and see some pics.  I have one and it is a inexpensive, warm, comfortable fleece hat that can be folded down over the ears.  Comes in a variety of colors. Good luck and hope this helps.

Classic Bowman wool makes one. I have a hat ( not a cap) that is wool felt from Cabales that has the fold down ear flaps pretty warm and it is great in the wind.

Nothing wrong with wool hats that's for sure...but I'm pretty sure they would dampen the sound waves more than other materials.

Plenty Coups might do the trick.

I wear in canal aids, and we definitely have wind wind.  I wear a variety of hats. A hat and hood make for a flexible response to prevailing conditions. I do like that plenty coupe and may invest in one

I don't wear my hearing aids in the woods, generally, because I don't want to lose them. I've already lost two, and the next replacement will be at full cost.

Also, if you pull a hat over these hearing aids, you will experience feedback (at least I do). Another reason for not wearing them outside. I suppose I could wear them on a calm day when I'm not following the dog. But in hot weather perspiration would affect the electronics.

This is a battle I,ve fought for years. The best thing that works for me are the Buff headwear products. They can be worn a 100 way, I just slip over head and ears an let the tail hand to the back. Put what ever kind of hat I want an go.

Richard,

I don't hunt in hot weather.  I don't hunt down here in SC until late October or early November.  I want at least a couple of good, hard frosts before I go to the woods.  I have more problems battling chiggers than I do dealing with the wind!  I've only come close to losing a hearing aid in the woods once while hunting in IL.  My climber treestand slipped on me and caused me to fall into the tree.  When I hit the tree it knocked the hearing aid out of my right ear.  Before I climbed the tree I had laid some stuff at the base of the tree for some reason.  The hearing aid landed the only place I could for sure find it, right on top of the items at the base of the tree!   :)    I wear my hearing aids while hunting because I wouldn't be able to hear animals communicating or walking through the woods, if I didn't.

I too use a hearing aid in my ear that works.Deaf from birth in other one.No sense of sound direction. What I do is wear a hat with a soft total brim [all around] and keep it just above the sound entry port on the part of the  aid that goes behind the ear.If it is too close I get major feedback[whistle].Wind noise is a major pain in the rectal area but with some experimental fiddling the problem should be alleviated somewhat.--Hope this helps.

I hear you(pun intended!)  In the first two elk seasons I wore mine, I sweated one into malfunction, and then lost one the next year while racing through thick stuff to get in front a bugling bull and his cows.  I didn't even wear them last season.  I can hear MOST bugles but have trouble homing in on the direction, and I miss lots of faint sounds.  It's an awful handicap, that's for sure.  Yes, I can wear them on a stand or sitting, but it's a miserable distraction to keep worrying about them. If on a stand and it's pouring or heavy wet snow, do you decide to take them out? And, listening to the wind whistle in them is no fun either.  But, as to the idea of a hat, anything that covers my ear closely causes them to shriek. I am now thinking that a loose fitting hood like the ones on Asbell's pullovers might actually be helpful.  Have not been a fan of hoods in the past, but this getting old is making me face some uncomfortable realities!  I wish you luck finding a solution - and if you do, PLEASE share what you learned!!!

I think you will find my Coups Cap will fit the situation. Many like the camo but I prefer the green or brown for hunting.Though it is Not wind blocker fleece it does block wind well. I have a custom wind blocker vest (made by my wife) and it is not nearly as comfortable and stretchy as my regular fleece vest (also made by my wife).
Come summer to protect my bald head from sunburn I wear the cotton jersy knit Coups Cap in camo. Some times when out stumping or fishing I forget just how strong the sun can be on an old fella! LOL

Just bought a rabbit lined Mad Bomber hat at Gander Mountain-marked way down because of the season. Straps around chin but has small ear flaps that can be hooked open for space right at the ear. Pretty dufous looking hat but holes might keep the aids from screeching. Roy
