For those of you who have been to these hallowed grounds, what is that libation of choice for late-night fireside storytelling that has been mentioned here before, but the name escapes me. "That which if ye drink the last drop and not replace the bottle, ye shall be banished from Valhalla forever." I think it's a scotch. Me being a southern redneck, my taste runs more toward Jack Daniels, but I'm willing to try new things at my age because I don't have all that much time left!

Can't say about Shrewhaven
But I know what it would be for "Iron Bulls Village" :bigsmyl: :goldtooth:

Oh good! I see that you have found a cold weather activity!
Killdeer

Killdeer you've got a memory like a steel trap  Although it's been the favorite libation for the majority at Shrew Haven for many years,...there are some Johnny come lately's that have there own idea of a before supper drink,... some kind of Irish whisky
-
Thanks all. Looks like something that'll put a serious dent in my wallet, but what the heck, I can scrimp on cigars. Here's my tip, Arturo Fuente Curlyheads. I've smoked cigars costing ten times as much that weren't as good!
-
Ron is refering to MY favorite, Johnny Jameson Irish Whiskey. As my dear Uncle Jack likes to say..."You can't be a fraid of whiskey, boy, sometimes you've got to grab it about the neck and show it who's boss!"
-
Roger, here's an Irish quote for you.
“Ninety percent I'll spend on good times, women and Irish Whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste.”
Here's an archers quote.
"Even if a man can't afford a new bow, he usually can afford a glass of good bourbon."
:goldtooth:

MY GOD Ron.....You have gotten civilized over the years :scared:
Ain't nothing SACRED no more

I'll second the A.F. Curly Head!! My favorite, but not really cheap is C.A.O. L'Anniversario!!

Gave up the CROCK for GLASS and CORK for a CAP :scared:
Vance, Basil Haden has a cork, it seems to make it taste better. Plus it makes that nice little POP sound every time to pull the cork. :goldtooth:
Here's the liquor cabinet at Shrew Haven a couple years ago. Now don't get the wrong impression with all those dead soldiers on the bottom shelf, they've been there awhile. I can say with all honesty that we're a pretty moderate group of drinkers.
You'll also notice the absence of any Irish Whisky....I think he had it in his bunk.

I'll have to help ya out with one of them "soldiers"! :campfire:

Dang Ron, now they all know the chef's secret of cooking at Shrew Haven...............
1. Pour one bottle of Basil Hayden in a bowl.
2. Add crushed rosemary, fresh ground pepper, garlic, and fresh chives.
3. Marinade leg of lamb for 12 hours.
4. Dump marinade down drain. :readit:
5. Cook lamb to medium-rare over a charcoal fire.
(do you think they're buying this buddy?)
OK, I'll agree that Basil Hayden is the bourbon of choice at camp. Also, 5 of the 6 guys in camp have impeccable tastes and the other, well, just remember there's one in every group. :D
Essentially we are at camp for 9-10 days for "camp week". Everyone brings a bottle of Basil Hayden and places it on the liquor cabinet. A nightly libation before dinner each night by 5 guys puts a dent in a bottle in a hurry. I know I've said it before, but great company, food, libation and location all blends together to make hunting camp special.
Oh, and I almost forgot, but thanks to Killdeer's impeccable tastes and memory, a good smoke (cigar or custom pipe blend of tobacco) finishes off the evening perfectly.

At my place we drink Wild Turkey, and smoke Ashton cigars.Just a little goes a long way.
One of the best parts of the hunt is dinner, drinks and friends.
-
Dan, in that order? :archer:
-
With all those empty bottles it's a wonder we fill the pole!
Ray is right to clarify, we just sip a little...up and "attem" at 4:30...6 guys just sipping 1 or 2 glasses kills a bottle a night.

Ron-
You had me worried!
I thought for sure you were gonna say that the new guy mixed a great bourbon with coke or fruit juice!
-
Kind of reminds me off a statement I read in a book of Canadian canoeist that they brought something to drink on their trips for celebrations and emergencies and often they would celebrate because there were no emergencies. We also drink a few beers or stronger in moderation at my camp also but us poor cajuns can't afford that brand.Kip

"at my camp also but us poor cajuns can't afford that brand.Kip"
Didn't George Burns say life is too short to drink cheap whiskey and smoke cheap cigars? ;)
Besides, when I bring my bottle in, no-one checks to see that I took last years empty and brought it back filled it with Jack Daniels. :biglaugh:

No "pop" mixing! Ray stops in Norway and gets a huge jug of the sweetest welll water available. God help the man who brushes his teeth out of the "good" water jug!

Bowhunting, friends and good whisky reminds me of a story. Some years back I went on a hunt with Jay Massey down the Moose John. Jay always had the bush plane drop you off at a point where you had to pack in about 9 miles, it was kinda like earning your right to hunt. Anyway a 60lb pack over uneven terrain is hard on a man that isn't use to it.
At about the 3/4 point from drop off to base camp I was getting tired and might have said something to that effect. Jay said to me, "Ron, if you want, I'll help you with your load". To which I replied, "No thanks Jay, this pack ain't that heavy." Then Jay said, "Oh I wasn't gonna carry the whole pack, just that Texas 5th you've got on top for a drink or two at the fire tonight." :D

"I thought for sure you were gonna say that the new guy mixed a great bourbon with coke or fruit juice!"
Ooops. I thought that bourbon was for mixed drinks. For straight drinking I like Scotch. :p
Ok, I know it's coming... :knothead: Hahaw! Beat you to it!! :D

I am still nursing a jug of spring water from my camp. I drink it a cup at a time, and savor the taste of freedom that comes gushing out of my beloved mountains. Liquor is great stuff, but there's something very special and magical about water. It is the strongest connecting spirit that keeps us all linked within the Circle.

Killy, I agree,it brings a different meaning to the phrase "there's something in the water".
