I've come to the sad conclusion that I just plain shoot recurves better, much better in fact it's not even close. Ugh now I sell a few. I'm only going to hold onto my Hill,my Ed Scott and without question my Stalker Renegade, but that bow is a cheater, she really is a recurve with straight limbs. From now on it's a bow with a curve for me. And I will say I love everything about longbows, the straight limbs, how light they are. But I just can't seem to get them to shoot on a level that I demand.
Does this mean you will have to change your screen name to shortstick or mediumstick?
This is something I struggle with. I just love the look and feel of the Hill style longbows but I have come to the conclusion that I will never shoot them as well as my r/d longbow with the recurve type grip but I may just stick with the Hill style anyway.
Did the same recently - love my longbows but just can't tap with them the way I do with a recurve

Same here. I won't give in. I just shorten my hunting effective range a little.
Yes, I recently inadvertently converted myself to recurves also. They do shoot pretty darn good.
Well, I'm the other way around. I shoot my longbow better and love shooting it more than the recurve. I have to keep a recurve so I can enter more classes at the 3D shoots though!
Bisch
I too shoot my recurve better but I have sooooo much fun shooting my ACS CX.
There is a bow i know of that will give you the best of both worlds....
Nice deep core slender limbs, and curves all in the right places..... you might say they are kinda sassy looking.... :goldtooth:
How Sad, I think I'm gonna cry.
God bless you Peter, Should we burn some candles for ya bro? :bigsmyl:
We should start support groups for this.
Welcome to the dark side of trad archery, the recurve. :bigsmyl:
Candles would be nice, but I'm old school, none of the scented ones please and how about some hand holding as well, lol
Kirk I hear you and if I should wander, you top the list.
Recurves arent dark, you have done the right thing, by coming to the conclusion that recurves are what you shoot best, and if you shoot well, it is more enjoyable. I am the same way, shoot way better, with a RC, and am more likely to make a cleaner, more ethical kill on game. Welcome to the LIGHT, MY BROTHER OF THE RECURVE!
It's ok and you'll be ok too...it's all good!!
If it pleases you to shoot ________(fill in the blank)... then you are where you need to be.
I know that there are bows out there that aren't American Semilongbow styles that I can shoot easier but I choose these because...
It's not how the bow feels when I shoot it... but how the bow makes me feel when I shoot it.
You're doing the right thing for you. Kudos!
God bless,Mudd
Pretty good Mudd. Really philosophical! Roy's right. Shoot whatever makes you feel good.
next thing you'll be getting a metal riser.......!!!
I wish i could pinpoint my problems to a bow....lol, everytime i have problems, i trace them past my bow allll the way back to me. :banghead: :banghead:
HAPPENS EVERY TIME
No problem, this is the justification and joy of owning many different types of bows. I go back and forth all the time. Curves 3, Hills 1, R/d d/r 3 and
pondering on another Hill type.
I shoot them both equally well. My personnal opinion is that recurves are drop dead gorgeous compared to a longbow. But there is something about a longbow that calls to me. I pick up a recurve and shoot for a week or so then it is back to the longbow. It just feels right in my hand. I recently made a rule that I will not buy anymore recurves. I just don't shoot them enough. Right now my baby is a 69" 58#@28.5" Wesley Special that is a joy to shoot. and doesn't feel any heavier than a pencil in your hand.
I'll be frank, what motivates me to drop the longbows is simple, even though I do love much about them, I just can't seem to get the accuracy I want out of them. It's about me not the bow. There are probably longbow shooters out there than can whip me but it's not about competition. It's about using the best tool for the given job. For me it helps the confidence level. I found I was working hard trying to get it to work and let's face when the moment counts I'll choose a bit of easy everytime. I hope no one takes offense. If you shoot a longbow and are darn happy to do so, please continue to do so.
Every bow I own shoots exactly where its pointed every single time. I just point some better than others.

Maybe Crookedtstick64 :D
If you're happy, we're happy.
I am on the other side of the fence right now. I shoot the long longbow much better than the recurve.
For me they seem to be way more tolerant of bad form issues I have.
The recurves are more temperamental for me and when under pressure I seem to shoot the longbow better.
....but I miss the convenience and shortness and bowquiver...I just shoot the bare longbow better! For now....

It's not wandering bro.... Take a walk on the wild side now and then. Does yer heart good. every now and then i'll even take my dentures out and shoot a Hill style bow. :p
I've always shot recurves...never really had a desire to shoot longbows. They just seemed too long for treestands and really wasn't enough to them..looks wise to draw me in. That is until now. I really have an urge for a bow like this and it will most likely be next in line.

This happened to another guy just after a vasectomy...LOL Whats next pampered chef parties and a Jacuzzi in hunting camp. Dont give in to the lighter side of Trad..HaHaHa
Its all good you will return soon enough, the longbow will pull at your heart like your first love after the breakup.
Enjoy your new found path, may it bring you the reward you look for.
I'm bit hard too! Currently have a recurve and a longbow ordered. Trying my first static tip curve and wondering if the same paradox will occur between my regular recurve and static tip recurve. Trad...so simple it's complicated.
Peter, as this gets worse please consider me for the new home of your Ed Scott.
Mudd, Might call your brother we are getting clobbered with huge amounts of snow. Never seen anything like this. There's nowhere to put it we have so much.
:help:
Keith
Cromebuck, I have built quite a few longbows and some r/d longbows also and have recently built a static tip recurve. I have been very pleased with the results of static tip and do shoot it better than any of my longbows. Had to move up in arrow size and gained more speed. It just handles better and shoots better by far for me. Good luck on your new purchases. I think you will like the static tip!! Chort

Not much of a curve but it does not bend. Also I can shoot a low (61/4" brace) height and it is very quiet. Nothing but Terrys Hush Puppies on any of my bows. I am down to one puppie and it is now very close to the tip.
I'm strictly a recurve shooter too.
I tried for two years to master a Longhorn model hybrid longbow. I could never be very accurate with it on the very first shot of the day/shooting session.
This is why I eventually sold it. I think it's because of the straight style grip. This style of grip just doesn't "feel" natural to me or should I say, to my hand.
Nothing but a longbow in my hands, just feels right. :clapper:
I started out in the longbows and found the same thing. I just shoot recurves better. If you've never shot a Silvertip you should give them a try. You'll never be the same ;) :campfire:
I love my recurves, if we were all alike it would be a very dull world.
Peter, shooting that Talon makes it hard to love a longbow. I have that problem too. I was a d and r heavy pusher until I shot the first Talon. Suddenly bells rang, lights started flashing, Longbows started hanging . LOL'
God bless you all, Steve
Longbows are more difficult to master than a RC,but for me, that is challenging fun. Different strokes for different folks. If you don't feel confident with one type then shoot another by all means.
Steve,
What can I say, you ruined me, lol. I truly have been blessed with the recurves I have added to my collection. And it was nice that my GN Longbow quiver fit on the Talon. Those static limbs make the draw feel effortless. It has to be the quietest recurve around.
Peter they are quiet and smooth but so is a well tuned Squatch. I have the very first recurve that Kirk built and man its one fine bow. He went all out and even made it a carbon. I have never shot a bow that is deader in the hand at the shot . A local brand is as good or close but no better and they both just smoke and arrow. When you can get any bow that is quiet . smooth to pull and fast to boot then there is definately something to think about.
This year Lord willing I am going to challenge myself. I will attempt to build a fast string follow longbow. Just for fun and because I love string follows.
God bless you all, Steve
I want to shoot my Bear recurves well, I have 3 of them, but I am sooooo much better with my Elburg longbow.
Nothing wrong with your decision and recurves are truly works of art but I will never leave my longbow as I shot them better; I 99.99% hunt from the ground now and have killed as many deer as I did when hunting from trees; really have gotten into still hunting and what a joy to hunt with my longbow; enjoy your recurves and hope nothing but the best outcome for you.
:campfire:
Shoot what makes you smile.
Shooting any stick bow makes me smile. :biglaugh:
Always shoot what you are confident with.
Ive shot recurves for 20+ years. Curiosity got the better of me and I picked up a longbow last year. I LOVE shooting the bow, but I just couldn't get my consistency down. I was all over the place. I was ready to hang it up. I took three weeks off from shooting then came back yesterday and started shooting groups like this. Something must have clicked..or unclicked... I dunno. I suppose I will hold on to the longbow a little longer :)

Funny Snakebit, I started out with recurves including the Silvertip (loved that bow btw), but switched to longbows and won't ever go back. It's ALL good...use what works for you!
I am in the same situation, I shoot recurves much better than longbows, and longbows much better than selfbows.
I will never get rid of any of them as I love them all.
Longbows and selfbows definitely take much more practice to become consistent, and even then I limit myself to 15 yards for selfbows and 20-25 yards for longbows in hunting situations. A man's gotta know his limits.
I have learned a couple tricks that help with my longbow accuracy. The first is to have a heavier riser wood. I shoot all of my heavier physical weight longbows better, than lighter ones. So when ordering a longbow, I always ask for the heavy, dense riser wood. The other factor that is huge for me is shooting with a slide on, or strap on bow quiver. The extra weight acts as a stabilizer for me.
I know light weight is one of the reasons for shooting longbows, great for carrying, but not great for my shooting.
I love the feel of longbows vs recurves when shooting. Recurves to me seem soft or mushy. While a longbow is nice and crisp. But I really like the accuracy of my recurves. I think the ticket for me will be a recurve style handle with longbow limbs. Hopefully I will get the accuracy of a recurve with the shooting characteristics of a longbow. Now I just need to pick a bowyer and get one on the way.
What I have learned after 18 years of this trad journey is that it is all fun.
Im just the opposite. I like longbows better am thinking of selling my recurve. I like the quieter and physically lighter bow. Just personal preference.

x2 My hat is off to all longbow shooters.
This can also go with individual bows of the same type. I know of one man that wanted to shoot a high performance takedown in the worse way. He tried two different ones, but he could not predict his shooting in hunting situations, so he went back to his Bear metal handled takedown. Last I heard he was getting a 64" Bear takedown, since that was his favorite length with the old one. Myself, I have been considering giving away my Hill style bows and just locking into my Robertson longbows, but there are times when, for no particular reason, I like the Hill style longbows better. I use the same form for both.
I like em both and shoot one about as good as the other, but I lean toward the R/D hybrid style longbows which really isn't a true longbow so call it what you will. Right now my favorites are a '76 model Kodiak Magnum, and a 58" Hornes Brush Bow......can't really complaint about the performance or accuracy of either one. I shoot my early 70's Bear Grizzly pretty good also, but honestly the KMag has so much more zip and @48" tip to tip it fits nicely in a blind or a stand.
I'm with Mudd! :archer:
It's not how the bow feels when I shoot it... but how the bow makes me feel when I shoot it.
Although I have a recurve, a hybrid & and a R/D LB that I can shoot some better,I just enjoy shooting Hill style longbows.
