Title: Took a Walk
Post by: Hoyt on February 28, 2012, 07:18:00 PM
Went to move my trail cam today and took a few pictures of the area I hunt behind my house on Shawnee public land. It's all hardwood ridges and hill top thickets boardered by either corn or soybean field...corn this yr.

Click on pics for full size.

Got to my camera and took it down...that's an Art  Young hat from 3Rivers I got on.. Good hat.     (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_mewalking.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/mewalking.jpg) ]

Soon as I got way on back in where I do most of my hunting saw a rub that wasn't there when I killed an 8pt. in the same area this Oct.     (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_FronttoBack19.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/FronttoBack19.jpg)

Soon as I got down to one of the creeks me and my buddy came onto this fairly fresh kill...don't know if it was done by coyotes or cougar...I've seen both back in there and the dog had been acting cautous for some time. In one area he wanted to hang close around me, which he never does. After we came across it he just kept staring all around the hills and ridges like something was around. What makes me mad is I had my trail cam in my backpack and put it up on the kill and the dadgum thing wouldn't power up. What I get for a cheap trail cam..got a better on on the way. Nothing but rocks and hard ground in this area and couldn't find any tracks.

Found a lot of fresh turkey scrating along the ridge, but didn't see any birds. Saw them just about every day I hunted back in there last season.

On the way back out I go along the edge of the cornfield     (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_FronttoBack35.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/FronttoBack35.jpg)

There's a few rubs close to the field     (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_FronttoBack31.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/FronttoBack31.jpg)

Saw these ducks on the pond in the cornfield.    (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_FronttoBack39.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/FronttoBack39.jpg)

They saw me in the woods..     (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/th_FronttoBack40.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/Iflytrout/FronttoBack40.jpg)

Oh well, going to be a long time before next deer season.

I had a picture of a small buck with one of it's hind legs eaten. Freshly done and posted it in thoughts someone may have an idea of what might have done it. It got deleted...sorry Terry, didn't know it was wrong to post it. Won't happen again.

Great pictures and a walk through your hunting grounds!  Looks like you have a really good buck or two in the area.  Thanks for sharing!       :)

This area is common for Shawnee around here...rolling hills and ridges of hardwoods with areas of planted pines where terrain permits. Also lots of thickets of various sorts. In this area one thing is sparse and that's flatland. Seems like everything that could be cultivated is in crops and the rest is Shawnee. There's a few places that are flat and on the Ohio, but not much.

I worked on my $39.00, public land, trail cam last night and got it working. Just took a few hard raps with a screw driver handle. Went back in today and set it up on the deer kill. It had been chewed on last night so might get a few coyote pictures. Cougar would have most likely attempted to cover it up. The buck had just shed it's antlers, but I haven't found any sheds yet.
