hows my calling..?
i thought it was pretty lame but my rabbit squealler is pretty old.

I really have to be honest. Your calling is bad. You call way too much, and the spot may look good, but it looked to me the wind was going from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. If a coyote did respond, more than likely, you would have not seen it. It would have circled downwind over your right shoulder in the trees and winded you.
You need to call with the wind in your face, and only call for 20-30 seconds, keep silent for a couple minutes, then call 20-30 seconds, and so on.
I heard a cough as well. Any coyote within 500+ yards can hear that on a calm to low wind day. I have called coyotes with a lip squeek that where hundreds of yards out. They can hear a mouse squeek at 500 yards.
The first sound was decent, the second sound you made wasn't so good. Not saying it won't work on pups from the previous spring, but adults have heard and seen that song and dance before and will just ignore you. They have been there, and did that.
Not putting you down at all, I just want you to be good at it. I have been calling coyotes for over 25 years, and have been a Goverment hunter for the past 12.

i pretty much knew my calling stinks, its not something i practice at. theres a bunch of coyotes that are in this area in the eve. when i leave my stand, they are always yipping and howlling, and nobody hunts them. i'l keep my calling down to about 30 seconds. i picked this log pile just for the vantage point to the cleared area everything else is thick woods and valleys.

This time of year, most coyotes are paired up and mating. The last several ******* I have killed were in heat. Howling is a great call now! Coyotes are very territorial, and will come to run your butt out of their area.
Also, if it is like around here, a distress call of a rabbit will scare more coyotes away. Everyone and their brother has been out all winter blowing that sound, and the remaining coyotes are call shy to that. Try a deer distress with your voice. I hold my fingers on my nose while making a whaaaa, or baaaa. Throw in a couple coyote yelps, as if the coyote got kicked, add more deer bawls, and keep watching, they will come.
Also, while bowhunting coyotes, you may want a second person set-up downwind 50 yards or so. Most coyotes will circle, and you want someone there to take them out.
A decoy like a feather blowing in the wind can help. but I have found not needed. Cover scents are way over-rated. I tried skunk, and fox/coyote urine, and them coyotes smelled me right through that stuff at hundreds of yards away. Try to play the wind at all times.

The best way to get good, is to keep after them and learn from mistakes. There are a few decent coyote calling videos out there. Randy Anderson has some good ones that should fit well for your area.

I agree your calling was a bit weak and long winded. It had my dogs full attention, it rather drove them nuts.
I have had best luck with turkey yelping in wooded areas.
keep at it and ask questions, its the best way to get better.
I don't know about the yote calling but it looks like you called in one heck of a nice buck!

My german shepherd responded well. She almost climbed in my lap to see what the fuss was on the computer. I agree with what was said earlier about using the rabbit call. Those old dogs have heard it and heard it again. Same as seeing a truck slow on the road they will head the other direction cause theyve been shot at before. I like a pup in distress call. Ive had great luck with it. I run electronic callers more choices on those. Easier on your lungs too! But its not for everyone and to each his own. Keep at it!
If you would like I could let you borrow a coyote calling DVD so you could listen to the caller and practice along with him. PM me if your interested. It takes lots of practice and like Shedrock said, learn to howl. Not just one howl but learn their language as well. I get a lot more out of it when I howl them in, plus not everybody and their brother knows how to howl...yet

My pooch had her ears up, but got up when the second call started up. She was looking around the computer, then looked to see if it was on the balcony.
I started howling when the bucks showed up. WOW!! :eek: :bigsmyl:
I couldn't tell what the second call was supposed to be. Sounded like a flat red shouldered hawk to me. But then, I have no experience calling predators, except when I crack open a beer in camp, ApplePie and Duffy show up. :dunno:

I've been trying with limited success..
I never call past 15 seconds. If its a quiet day, ill call for 10 seconds, every 6 to 8 minutes.

Ditto. lately I been getting them with chalenge barks and howls ect. Fox sounds are good also barks and howls and fox distres calls. coyotes hate foxes. Like Shed rock said randy anderson has some good vids. Keep at it and don 't give up.Wind always in your face. You can't hide your scent from a coyote.
