I have 20 preference points for Elk in Colorado. I have always looked at this as my retirement hunt when I will be able to hunt the entire season in whichever unit I want. I retire next year (2013) and will be applying for my tag. I have always felt that I would hunt either in Unit 2 or Unit 201. It is tough to scout these units since I live 1,000 miles away in Washington State. Does anybody have any experience hunting these units and could offer me with some advice?
20 pts!!!! Wow! Someone help this guy! Go to MonsterMuleys.com in the Colorado section and ask also. Lots of guys will help.
Thanks, Snag!
Also, you can try the Colorado Forum on here and then Bowsite.com has a Colorado Forum, both are good sources for state specific information.
also here is a new thing on CPW websight

Congrats on your retirement next year.!
Good advise from both Davids, also I suggest getting ahold of the local Wildlife Bioligist and the DWM for the area you choose.
Ask them about public access to both ares.
Either area will be an exceptional hunt.

Hi Congrats..
You may also consider going to www.huntdata.com (http://www.huntdata.com) and get the unit wildlife maps for the area that your going to hunt. These maps show the elk concentrations for summer and winter and migration patterns.
Get is shape elk country is big and elk are big. Elk are so exciting to hunt
I second huntdata.com, that can show you alot of good info. Get into contact with state biologists and sometimes local outfitters can be a big help. Sounds like fun, and get some good glasses. Best of luck! Units 61 and 76 are other great units for big bulls if you have preference points like yourself if you don't find good info on 2 or 201.
i used to hunt in 201. Shoot me an email.
I have hunted mule deer a few times in 201 so drop me an email if you want. i can get you started in the right direction.
1000 miles or not I would find a way to come out at least once in the summer to look things over and even if you cannot really scout elk a lot,
doing this you will gain a wealth of first hand info on campsites, the lay of the land if you will and other local knowlege.
If it were my lifetime hunt thats what I would do.
..."honey, lets do something different for this summer vacation. Like check out the Rocky Mtns... BTW deary , here are some diamond earrings I found for you...."
