Title: Hog trip/tips for poor boys?
Post by: Rob W. on February 20, 2012, 07:50:00 PM
I'm in the planning process for a hog hunt this year. With my schedule and funds(lack of) it is going to have to be a 3 day weekend trip with camp grounds near by and inexpensive tags. Am I asking to much?

I have read through most of the hog threads and have made up my mind to make this happen this year. This will be my first hog and out of state hunt so any info from what states to hunting techniques would be appreciated.

Thanks, Rob

Try the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. It's a long drive for you , but it might be an adventure !

Go to Alabama Conservation Dept website   www.outdooralabama.com (http://www.outdooralabama.com)
Look up Public Lands/ WMAs.  Lots of hogs on some of the WMAs.  Lowndes Mang. Area, Mobile area the Mobile Tensaw Delta.  Lots of hogs.
Lowndes is in the central part of the state and has a good campground, not too far away, and some primitive camping on the area.
The website also has a good feral hog page.  Interesting.

Texas would be a haul but could be done. Might have to invest in a scooter with a bow holder instead of my v8 for that one.    :D

Jag I will check that out.

Fort stewat in Georgia.  Licenses should end up being $65.
From what I understand, they have camping areas too.

Archery hunters must qualify.

You may want to give Ray Hammond a shout. I went in January and I am going back Memorial Day weekend.

For the price you get dinner and a place to sleep on Thursday evening. You hunt with three meals a day Friday and Saturday. You hunt a half day on Sunday. Three nights stay, 9 meals and 2.5 days of hog hunting seems reasonable to me for a weekend hunt for the price Ray gets.

I am looking to find a place in Florida for a week long hunt next for hogs.

Good luck
Gil

Rob, a bunch of Georgia guys get together every year in a couple of public land hunts and they always see hogs and folks in the group take hogs. I've been wanting to go but it's a long drive for me too.  It takes place March-April and they camp out in one of the parks and hunt from there.

Rob, some guy with the PBS is hosting a cheap hog hunt in Georgia, to be held for members on the first weekend in March.  Tags and camping about $100.  Good public area.

Also, the Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia hold member hunts at various locations throughout the year, usually for multiple animals like hogs and turkeys, hogs and deer, hogs and bear, etc.  This is a great group of bowhunters, that welcomes new members from outside GA, even if you do talk funny.

Ditto on Georgia, tons of public land hogs
One of my favorite is savahana national wildlife refuge
It's a week in march, small game lic is all you need. It's a gun hunt or bow. You need a boat for access, tons of hogs, a lot of pressure but you will get shots.

Rob, when you planning this hunt? I've always wanted to hunt hogs... but like you, my funds are short. I would still be interested if I could scrounge some money up. There's hogs around here but would have to find somebody to let us hunt. Sounds like fun!

Rob, If you end up coming to the great state of Georgia, give me a shout.  I would love to meet up with you and do some hog hunting.  Only a couple hours from me wherever you choose to go.  Unfortunatly I don't have any honeyholes to show ya, but we can sure find us one. I've got some info on Ft. Stewart spots for hogs.

Look up Phillip West(spotteddog)  on here. He will likely have some good info for you on areas in North Georgia that I think would be closer than Texas.

Some of the places he mentioned to me in a PM were; Georiga WMA's; Cohutta, Warwoman, Swallowcreek and Blueridge.

Texas is mostly private land hunt only. Public land bowhunting is very slow comparatively. I've seen most animals while stillhunting. Be glad to hunt with you here anytime.

There is an all TG Hill/style hunt in Ga. coming up pdq that might be a great experience? Need to talk to my Ga bud about this one to make sure of hog numbers & accessibility.
