With the unseasonably warm winter were are having here in IA I thought it would be a good time to get the trad bow out to go stumping and look for sheds in the mean time. I'm planning on doing this next weekend & then also go to the Iowa Deer Classic.
Is there any shed hunters in here? If so, maybe we could also post some pictures?
Honestly I've never really went out specifically looking for them. Every once in a while I'll stumble upon one during turkey season, but I'm guessing a good majority of them are eaten by squirrels much before then.

Of all the sheds that I have found, this may be my favorite.
I'm down for brown!

I love hunting shed antlers. I found this year old set in Dec on a late season elk hunt.
Our mulies and elk don't start shedding good until mid March.
I usually pick up over a hundred deer and elk sheds a year.

I find about 75 antelope horns a year as well.
That is how I got the name Shedrock. When I'm not hunting, I'm looking for sheds and arrowheads.
found this one on 12/26 walking out to my tree stand! It was laying i the middle of the clover field i had planned on hunting that night.

I'm always looking anytime I am in the woods, I found one yesterday while I was hog hunting. Can't do pics though.
LittleBigMan, that is a very nice shed. I have been checking all the web sites to see if they are dropping in Kansas yet.
Never considered myself a shed hunter, then in 2010 while spring turkey hunting I found this set. It got me hooked. I've found a few more since then, but nothing like these...Mike

Tracy - I knew pronghorns shed their sheath annually, but that is the first picture I've ever seen of shed sheaths, thanx for sharing.
Many photos about of freshly shed deer with bleeding pedicles, but does anyone have to share a photo of pronghorn horn core freshly shed. Surely with as many pronghorns out there someone would have a picture?
Great find mooseman!! He was a hog..
A few found this year so far..

In the area I live/hunt the wintering grounds are usually flooded each spring which effectively nixes any shed hunting.
In two or three weeks though I am going to the southern part of the state to spend a weekend shed hunting with a friend.
Maybe after that I'll have some pics to share...
I have plans of trying to get out and hunt for sheds. Thought it'd be fun and possibly get some scouting done at the same time. I found the shed of a little 4 pointer at the family farm so I'm pretty eager to try and find some more.
Pat
I go but rarely find any.I took my 3 year old grandson today and he about wore me out with all his queations. He ended up on my shoulders for about half the walk until he decided he needed to poop and then it was time to head home.

These mulie sheds had a gross score of near 190", with an estimated outside spread of 34". Awesome deer. I have a pic somewhere of him wearing them.

Big 7X7. How would you like to arrow a bull like this? Me too!
These antlers ended up as part of a floor lamp.
More elk sheds I found. I build floor lamps with them and give the lamps wih a rawhide shade to ranchers/farmers that let me hunt their land. I also donate to Bowhuners Of Wyoming for their annual auction/banquet.

Sheds, sheds, and more sheds.
and more sheds. I ended up putting up a shed to store all my sheds.

Last pic. Elk and deer shed antler dual bird bath.
Lots of cool stuff to make with sheds. I made this for a rancher who let me bowhunt his property. Gifts go a long ways.
I havent had a chance to get out yet here. Still alot of snow in my neck of the woods. It is great exercise and a great chance to do some stumpin as well. I am about a month away from my shed time. Shedrock those are awesome. Thanks for sharing those. You remind me of my little brother he has a knack for finding good mulie sheds and elk sheds.
Nice Shedrock!
Awesome sheds guys. Keep the pics coming. And nice work, Shedrock. I have been out stumping numerous times since Christmas, but haven't found any. Folks around here have been seeing bucks with their antlers still on. Seems late to me. Maybe the mild winter has something to do with it?
Unreal finds ....really neat. In 45 years I have only found 3......of course it would help to look where there more deer....lol! Shedrock really nice work....love the bird bath!! :notworthy:
I found these while hunting pigs a few weeks ago.
I found them 3 days apart within 20 ft. of each other.
Do you think they are from the same animal? One is much thicker at the base then the other.
Thanks!
Tenbrook

Tenbrook,
I believe those are from 2 different deer. The one antler looks to be rubbed more than the other. One good way to tell is by looking at the burrs. Compare the bottoms side by side. If they are a match, the shape should be about the same, and the same size.
I went out yesterday to stump shoot and shed hunt. Only found one shed that had been laying there for awhile and was eaten up pretty bad. I go out every chance I get from now till turkey season.
I've been planning on going here soon. I just saw a 8 point last Monday with both sides of his rack still.
I have been out twice stumping and shed hunting with my son. Nothing yet. I am still seeing bucks with horns in the field. Now in December during the shotgun break I saw two bucks that had already shed. Strange year.
We have a guy that the local farmers let walk the fields for sheds. He saves their tractor tires buy getting the sheds first. I keep finding his boot prints in my timber. That may just be why I have not found anything yet!
Plan on going to the Deer Classic on Sat. I prefer Friday but the kids have a school dance.
Old Mossy Back shed another set this year :big laugh:

Another week or two and my dog Dakota and I will be out sniffing for Blacktail sheds. They are especially hard to find in our hunting woods because everything is so thick. If we hit it right when the horns are dropping my dogs have smelled them out in the past.
Were busy trapping right now but will get out soon. Nothing better then walking around shooting stumps and picking up antlers.

Good luck everybody looking forward to the picks. :D
Tracy
No help with pronghorn core pix?
Tracker1, The guy spreading fertilizer on my pastures and hay ground found 2 last friday. I live in SE Kansas.
Them there's some dandy sheds. Seems like the only thing I find are little one's. Still like to look for'em though.
Jason
Im not a shed hunter per say but I did find one today, just because it was beside the road I was riding on. REALLY EARLY to find one down here this time of year. Usually we dont start seeing them til April. Maybe cause we havent had a winter ???
Yeah, there are still bucks in my area fully crowned (seen one today) although right now is the peak shedding period around here, but some will still carry into April.

Here you go Zbone.
This is wrong though. When pronghorns shed, their new horn pushes the old one off while growing. This process starts in later November. You won't see the bone like in above photo, but will see a black horn, made from hair, just smaller than his old one. Very unique critters. They are not antelope, and are not related in any way. I will see if I have any pics of freshly shed bucks.
Zbone, I have no pics of freshly shed pronghorns. When they do shed, they look just like a really small buck. Their new horns push off the old.
Nothing this year yet but a couple pics of past years.

Shedrock - Way cool, thanx for sharing.
Had a young buck cast one side in my back yard the other day.
Seen him fully crowned on Sunday the 19th, and found his right antler Tuesday morning of the 21st.
Waiting for the snow to melt here. When it does I will be out looking. Found 5 so far but 4 of them are last years.
Those are some nice whitetail sheds 3T!
Good luck on findin' some bone this year!
Shoot straight, Shinken

Been in the woods quiet a bit lately and only thing I found is the first tick of the season today. It was on my waist when I got home.

After church and Sunday dinner this past week my daughter and I spent a couple hours shed hunting and scouting. No sheds on that day, but a great day to be in the woods with my girl.
Austin, looks like she was having fun even though you didn't find any. Looks like a nice day as well. We have had about 2 foot of snow here in the last 2 weeks so your weather makes me jealous.
