Seems like a lot of people seem to shoot both, just wondering if the people that only shoot one style have any specific reasons to like one or the other the best. I'm shooting bows in the 40# to 45# range, if that has anything to do with a certain style bow. Thanks, Dave
I still shoot both from time to time. I just love the simple beauty of a D shaped longbow. Just something about the simplicity that I fell in love with the first time I shot one. Out to 15 yards or so I am more consitent with my recurves but that gap keeps getting less and less.
I like longbows for the way they feel and sound, lighter , and seem to be less noisy for me! I've only had two recurves so maybe I didn't give them a fair chance!
i have shot both like the recurve better easy to shoo faster and more forgiving but still love both
I've owned both recurves and one longbow. I shoot recurves very well, but alas, when shooting a longbow, it gives me a case of the "raspberries" if you get my drift.
I tried shooting my Belcher hybrid "Longhorn" longbow for two years, but the the grip on a conventional longbow feels foreign to my hand. I could never get used to it. I guess shooting the medium pistol grip of a recurve for 48 years sealed my fate when it comes to shooting a longbow.
I prefer longbows but shoot recurves better, I made a decision to stick with two recurves and just shoot. Enough is enough!
I prefer the look, the aura, the attitude and the lore that wafts around any longbow like the mythic smoke of the hunters fire.
A longbow is all I ever wanted to be seen with in my hand.
just shoot both. if you decide on one before long you will be thinking about the other.your going to wind up shootin both anyhow .trust me, if your new just pick one to start.an stay with it for atleast a year.if you buy both to start it becomes too much at once.good luck ED
Everything about me wants to be a longbow shooter but I picked up and recurve not too long ago and realized it was just much more "natural" for me, so out went the longbow and in came a hoyt buffalo. I'm sure I'll try again soon enough though :archer:
I shoot both, it's really not difficult, it's all in the grip.
I just like the look and feel of a D shaped longbow. Its more a feel good thing than any technical issue. But like some of the others here I have both and still shoot the recurve every once in a while.
My main goal is hunting.
I like a mild D/R longbow about 62/64"
No string hitting limbs,a bit quieter than most recurves.
No handshock , easily tuned.
My .02 , YMMV
Longbow only here. Slight rf/df or D shaped. Love the look, the feel, and the silence. Like Kenny said YMMV.
I have shot D longbows and liked them, I shoot recurves and like them also, but lately I shoot hybrids almost exclusively. I like the way the limbs load on draw, how quiet they can be and how well they perform for me.
Nightwing, with ILF setups you can now shoot longbow or recurve with any style grip you like.
I shoot both but heavily prefer a longbow. the main reason being the lightness in the left hand and smoothness of draw. But for me recurves seem a little snappier so thats a plus. over all i hit dead on more often with my long bows... don't know what i'm doing wrong with recurves but for me longbows come out on top.
I shoot longbows and specifically one make and model. I have three of the same model. I shoot 68 inch R/D longbows. No stacking, no hand shock, plenty fast for me, and I love a low wrist grip. I can shoot recurves well, the handles just feel clunky and huge in my hand.
Hill/style lb's only here for the past 35 years. Just personal preference re aesthetics & function. Shot plenty of recurves long ago. Not a fan of pistol or locator grips anymore as they are limiting to me comparatively. And, recurves are hard on my 31" draw fingers.
I have had both but I am not any closer to deciding than when I started...
Dalton, that may be the best answer yet!! :)
I like and shoot both... That said, it seems like i shoot the recurve a bit better, is it the fact that my recurve is lighter in weight than my LB?? I'm not sure.
I would love to try a D shape bow, heather mild r/d or Hill style, in 60# at my draw(30" with my current 68" r/d bow)...
I find recurves faster than most longbows but you need better form with a recurve . Longbows to me are more forgiving to mistakes in form but past 20 to 25 yards recurves shoot flatter than all but the newer reflex/deflex longbows IMO
I shoot longbows better than I do recurves. A recurves grip just doesn't seem to fit my hand quite right.
I like both, its what ever mood strikes.
I'm like Legend, love both and both have their places.just like Quivers ,so many differant styles and applications in hunting and shooting situations. As of lately I'm really liking forward handle R/d longbows,so simple ,light and quick. Then I wonder over to the HH thread and it starts all over with Mudd and his Merry Men !LOL
1964 glass Recurve; 2009 r/d osage longbow; primitive osage Choctaw; 72" English Hunter "D"; custom Georgia cypress longbow.....all the same to me. I just go out there and shoot. I look at my bows and whichever one calls to me in the moment, goes with me..... :archer:
I like both,I have no problems switching from one to another.
I shoot a takedown recurve for the medium grip and heavy riser. I would probably shoot a one piece recurve if it had some heavy woods in the riser section. The recurve grip is easier on my elbow.
Still love the look of a longbow though......
I shoot only recurves. I owned one longbow a few years ago. Someone else has it now.
I prefer the appearance of the recurve. I like the curves, lots of wood in the riser, and wider limbs. My preference has nothing to do with performance, it is entirely an aesthetic thing with me.
I shoot both and use the same riser, Ilf setup. Love them both.
Hybrid= Compromise
I was flipping a gold eagle coin, the one that was going to either buy me a JD Berry Apollo or a new Stotler. I mostly shoot Hill style bows, and two Robertson longbows. Then in one week two of my old bows came back to me. A real smooth Mcdonald and a Pete George yew. The holders of the bows bought new bows of their own. Which was all my wife needed to tell me that I was not going to buy any new bows as long as I have that many bows. If in doubt, the Stotler or the Apollo will do anything a Hill style bow will do, for me, if I was honest with myself, I would have to say that they are just as stable as the Hill style bows.
I shoot both.Love getting new bows and shooting. My newest that i have realy have been enjoying to shoot is my bear Kmag.
I have two of James Berrys bows. one is an American style , the Vixen and the other is JD's Renasanes.I also have four hills, one john schulz, brackenberry old timer and a few recurves. I will take my Berry bows any day of the week. If you can get a Berry. You wont go wrong. you know what they say ONCE YOU GO BERRY, YOU DONT GO BACK.
I was shooting both. But I was shooting the recurve for a faster arrow at the same weight. But I now have a Legends longbow which is faster in the same weight from my recurves.
I have both and love shooting both but if I'm honest with myself I do shoot the 'curves better.
As has been stated YMMV, Eric
