Title: Brown Glass a good riser choice?
Post by: Gator1 on February 19, 2012, 09:20:00 AM
I've got a bow to be built this spring, and am leaning towards brown glass.

I've seen Shedua Dymond wood, anyone know the specifics on ordering that?

Any other riser choices with brown glass would be appreciated.  Photos a plus.

If it was me, instead of ordering shedua dymonwood for the riser, why don't you use shedua for the riser and lightly stained red elm veneers for the limbs. Red elm veneers for the limbs will give the limbs a tiger striped look. It's a good combination. A photo showing the limbs and riser in the woods mentioned is below.

Almost forgot, the recurve below is a Blacktail and the red wood in the riser is cocobolo, but the brown wood is shedua.

Very cool! Very beautiful camo too!

The Blacktail in the photo has bamboo limbs, but bamboo is such a very light colored wood and really stands out in sunlight. That being the case, the thin veneer of lightly stained red elm covering the bamboo really gives the limbs a "camo" feel to them.

What kind of bow, may make a difference on how big the riser is as to how it looks. With brown glass I like Osage and cocobolo, or cocobolo and shedua. I think the the mellow yellow of Osage goes good with the brown glass!

Osage or light colored shedua look great. I have a picture of shedua and brown glass. I won't be at my computer until tomorrow but I'll post it then if I can find it.

If you are referring to brown glass on the limbs, i think it looks good with a number of different woods.

here is one with a King wood riser.

And here it is with a Walnut riser.

I think Shedua is an excellent choice. Conttrast it with just about any lighter wood, I like sage with it or maple , or myrtle, Or you can even go with a bit less contrast ala Bears old combination of bubinga and shedua. Shedua is great wood though and I'm surprosed that we don't see more of it being used.

God bless you all, Steve

Osage with Walnut. Should get better after the osage turns Darker.Simple but classy I think.

Brown glass looks good with most any riser. I have one ordered with myrtle riser and brown glass on the back and white on the belly side.

I wish I could post pics.  I have a Northern Mist Shelton.  It has a brazilian rosewood riser with all Yew Lams.  It has brown glass.  That is one sexy combo in my opinion.

Bob B. stop wishing and learn how to post those pics.  If an old non-techie guy like me can do it you can too.  It really isn't that hard and it's neat to be able to share photos on here with TG friends.  If all else fails, get a kid to teach you.    :D

I am still working on it Dave.  I have a photo bucket account, but some glitch is messing it up and I can not access it.  I can post pics on other sites, but those are easier for me as I only have to down load from my hard drive.  I struggle learning technology as I am so old school.
